Hi everyone, I just joined on this forum this week.

Sorry for asking, but I was wondering if anyone could show me any especially good threads that I should take a look at first, so I can get involved here?

Thanks! Michael Gladstone

You're going to be doing well to just keep up with the recent posts on the current threads. This is an extremely active forum if you haven't already realized it. And I suspect now that Gord's concert schedule has kicked in for 2007, it's going to be getting even busier. If you have something you'd like to say, for instance, about a particular song, just look through the titles of threads, and chances are you'll find it and then you won't have to start a new thread. I also always check the Small Talk section every day, and there's sometimes pretty interesting stuff discussed there too, that does not directly relate to GL. This forum is a blast, especially when you begin to understand some of the personalities better. Lots of diversity. Have fun and welcome!

Borderstone 01-31-2007 07:25 PM

Hi Mike Gladstone!
(Hey another"Stone"-"er")LOL!! :D Borderstone here, first of a big welcome to you, hope you enjoy it here. ;)

In answer to your question, the simpler answer is,on this board, anything that's about Gordon Lightfoot is ususally a good thread.

More so though,I'd reccomend the threads that at least have more than 5 replies.
Some folks start topics and for whatever reason, they just don't get a big response. Even mine!
Okay "B".. you might want to check that ego at the door! LOL! :D

In,"Samll Talk", whatever you find the most interesting is most likely the best.

RM 02-01-2007 01:53 PM

I would also suggest using the search option at the top of the page. However, in all honesty I see nothing wrong in asking or stating what you want to. Redundancy is alright in my book, so if its been discussed before......who cares ?

LOL
Actually that birthday card archive is thanks to David Sims
who once had a fine geocities GL site from where with perspicacity I had saved the birthday card pages back in 1997
Unfortunately after David abandoned his dedicated site he started a Yahoo "fan club" group at:-
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group...ghtfootfanclub
but latterly it has been afflicted with the irrelevant and mindless spam that is affecting many such groups and sites
going back to Mike's question funnily enough I had thought of starting a new topic with a very similar title myself,
The reason being that I fuly intend in the fairly near future doing what I have planned to do for a very long time and that
is to properly set up a Gordon Lightfoot webring
As that wiki explains at its start:-
"To be a part of the webring, each site has a common navigation bar; it contains links to the previous and next site"
Note in particular the reference to a "Navigation Bar"
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/images/Ferrari_Webring.jpg
Typical Navbar for the Ferrari webring
It is obviously not possible to add such a bar to many sites that I want to feature in such a webring
For example Google Group's presentation of the moribund Newsgroup alt.music.lightfoot
http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com
Although as Valerie has just commented in an email to me
"I'm afraid the newsgroup is essentially dead."
That is obviously true but it remains as an extensive archive of thousands of messages over the last 13 years and is an excellent resource for research etc
In fact the organisation I used to set up such a ring (for free) a long time ago, http://www.webring.org
actually checks every site in a ring and if it does not feature a navigation bar it is automatically removed
I worked out a workaround for this many moons ago;which is to write a "portal" page for every site I wish to include in my ring.
On that page I would then describe its purpose and history and provide a clickable link to the actual website
plus include the all important navigation bar of course
I would also like to list on the portal page what I consider to be the highlights of that particular site
In the case of corfid I intend two portals one for the site as a whole linking to:-
http://www.corfid.com
and the other to the Discussion Forums
linking to the summary page at:-
http://www.corfid.notlong.com
Obviously the highlights of the forums should include some of the best threads (topics) that
newbie Mike is asking about here.
So any thoughts would be appreciated
To get the ball rolling I think most would agree that the two topics initiated by that long absent "stationmaster" fellow
(Lorne now busy selling toilets on the rock I believe) are worthy of attention:-
1.Topic: Sounds like a lyric...
6 pages starting at:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...c;f=1;t=003673
and the 29 pages comprising his immensely popular and enjoyable quiz
topic: "PICTURE" that song...
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...=002499#000000
and I must not forget the
"corfid member map"
that was started by Watchman Al in the small talk forum then referred to by BillW at:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...=003558#000000
There was a confusing period of non-access during which two other topics started
Topic: CORFID member map
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...=004106#000000
and
Topic: NEW map location http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...=004109#000001

OK that is more than enough reading (and chuckling) to keep Mike busy for a while but if anybody has a favo(u)rite old topic
that they think should be listed on my webring portal page I would apprceciate you posting it here
and Of course there is the non participant (nowadays) Sheryl's fine first concert report at:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...c;f=1;t=003140

Peter Bro10 02-08-2007 04:52 PM

Perhaps the easiest way to find a really good thread to to look for a topic started be PeterBro10!

Sure hit every time!!! (just kidding of coarse, but could'nt resist).

Peter Bro10 02-09-2007 07:50 AM

but seriously, one of corfids best kept secrets is the search function. try it out, it's pretty handy.

johnfowles 02-09-2007 10:50 AM

One other suggestion:-
It is always worth reading the confessions of other Lightfoot addicts in the guest book, now conveniently split into yearly archives example 1999 (the first) at:-
http://www.corfid.com/gl/gbook1999.htm
John
P.S.
Strangely the most recent corfid guest book entry appears to be the one by the irrepressible Jessie-Joe on March 15th 2006 in which he said
"Hey guys, This site was block for so long, happy to see it running again. Gord I will see you once again on your birthday,
at "The Old Lady" on shutter street. Looking really forward to this one. Youre biggest fan and friend" OMER"
Unfortunately having attended the Kitchener concert in October Omer did not venture west again in November when he would surely have enjoyed the jam sessions etc
He had previously signed the guestbook in December 2005:-
"Hello,to everyone! I am without a doubt, the bigest GORDON LIGHTFOOT fan there is.I challenge anyone to try to stump me on any information about our beloved genius.I've been worshiping him since 1969.Saw him twice in concert,in Halifax,NS Oct,1987 and in Moncton,NB April 1990.Own every CD'S,and lots more stuff.HE is simply the best. Bye for now! Omer J. Landry
omarlandry@hotmail.com"
(I think that email address is no good??)

My favorite all-time thread is "You Create The Setlist."

Borderstone's second selection is something I still go back to when I want a good belly laugh!

What an imagination... egads...

Excellent Misty a response along the lines that I asked for above to add to my corfid highlights list.
BUT you omitted to quote the topic URL which was:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...=003522#000000
ANY more ANYbody???
Yes Walter's mythical list is awesome and very funny it is at
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...=003522#000014
Note for anybody remotely interested. In the same way the webmaster's emailed links for topics one subscribes to work i worked out that as Walter's funny was the 14th posting to that topic I changed the #0000000 in the basic URL to #000014.

You and me both Jess. ;) Not only did I think I and oldies stations were the only one who recalled him but that a website for him could not "possibly" exist!

In years since,
I've found there's websites for nearly every "fairly" known singer,to the ridiculously famous.

My favorite thread (besides my own...just playin') :D was Stationmaster's "Picture that Song" game.
Which if you go to it now,the pictures that were clues to GL's songs, are gone. :(

It was fun for all the months that it lasted though. ;)
