Bronson band part of Canada Day celebrations

A tribute to Gordon Lightfoot will be among the music entertainment planned for the Canada Day concert at Del Crary Park.

Local musician Danny Bronson and a band of city musicians will be the middle set of music that will also feature the Kawartha Jazz Ensemble and local band Mid Life Crisis.

So many people who live here love Lightfoot's music," said Bronson in an interview.

The band will include Al Kirby, Terry Finn, Mike Graham and John Robertson.

"We were trying to do some of the original arrangements but as we found out Lightfoot changed his arrangements over the years," said Kirby.

"We'll be doing some songs from his middle years when Lightfoot was at the top of his game," said Bronson. There are so many great songs and only so many that you can do."

Kirby said while most of the songs are easily recognizable as Lightfoot songs there will be one or two fringe songs that will give the audience a bit of an education.

The song list will include Don Quixote, For Lovin' Me, Did She Mention My Name, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, If You Could Read My Mind, Early Morning Rain, Song For A Winter's Night, Canadian Railroad Trilogy, Cotton Jenny, Alberta Bound, and Bobby McGee.

"The sound will be as close as possible," said Bronson, "but then we realized we don't have to make it sound exact.

"We're not a clone band...a tribute band," he said.

There aren't a lot of people doing it. "We can't recreate his banter because there really isn't any," he said.

He explained with Lightfoot it was almost all music on stage.

Kirby said Bronson has the vocals down. He said Bronson "is a dead ringer in his vocals."

Kirby said there are enough songs in their song list to do two 45-minute sets. Bronson said he doesn't know where the tribute music will go but there could be more concerts in the future.

The band will have a pedal steel, dobro, six and 12-string guitars, keyboards and drums.

The show begins at 7 p. m. on the stage at Del Crary Park, with the Bronson band starting at approximately 8 p. m.

Admission is free. There will be family events at the park prior to the concert, with fireworks following.

Sounds like a nice event. If I lived closer, I'd be there.

That is awesome, it must make Gord very happy to see these people paying tribute to him and his music like this. Wish the show would come to my neck of the woods.
