In some interviews I've read, Gordon describes going on several canoe trips over the years to the Arctic Circle and back. He called them, "real macho trips. No booze...and no firearms!". That blows me away. Aren't there still pre-historic sized Kodiak bears and stuff up there? The nights must have been intense.

That would be too macho for me. As a kid I lived in Alaska for three years. No booze, maybe, but that's one time I don't forget the firearm - a big one. Encounters with Mr. Griz are nothing to take lightly. Yes, they still have them up there.

Actually Kodaik bears are only found on Kodiak Island in Alsask. You may be thinking of barren land grizzley which is the case.
Gord did 7 major trip in Northern Canada. I think the Coppermine, Kazan, Back rivers to anme a few. yes the nights were probably great with the mid-night sun.
These trips are where he got his inspiration for many of his songs including" Where the Long River Flows; Home from the forest, Ring Neck Loon, Canary Yellow Canoe, Whispers of the North" Etc.
