I clicked over to the Albums section here on the site and read the lyrics. What I believe it's about is how he looks back on a relationship he started with some woman,when he was younger. The line about "having you on my knee" could be one of his youngest kids I'd guess,or the woman herself. It seems to be written in past tense so I guess maybe it's not the relationship it started out to be or else he's taken aback by how long they've been together.

I'm sure there's more ways to look at it but that what I get out of it. Later!

I feel that GL's actually talking about a mature relationship, but also looking back on the passionate beginnings of that relationship. How surprised you are at the larking about and scheming you do and the emotions generated. Like BS says, how surprised he is at how long they've been together, but with a sense of satisfaction rather than doubt.

I do think it is one of his more difficult songs but then maybe I'm just being thick.

To illustrate this on a personal level. When my boyfriend and I met, he insisted we were just two ships passing in the dark (I remember it as tho' it were yesterday, it hurt so much).

We are still together 22 years later - much to my surprise.

BTW - How do you describe a 60 year old man you've been living with for 22 years? Boyfriend sounds ridiculous.

I'm glad everyone has decided to quit picking at me. Actually(as I said in small talk) that "hole/whole" thing was actually a typing error, not a spelling error. I meant to put a w before it but my hands just weren't working properly and I also never have much time to check before submitting. About those topics though, they were just for the heck of it.

Let's go after someone else and pick at them. Like Borderstone, I'm sure he'll have a lot of interesting stuff to say about that. Or The Watchman.

And you've got to get rid of that cassette player. They're a thing of the past, not cool. You need a nice flashy CD player, a preamp equalizer, upgraded speakers, a few tweets, and port a subwoofer through the back panel into the cab (make sure it's in a bandpass box) and wire it all up to 1500 watts of amplification.
Then your babe magnetism will soar.
Don't play ACDC though, and stay away from heavy metal. Babes like good music, like Lightfoot.

Yeah, but it causes too many hard feelings. You have to learn who you can and can't fight with. We all know you take it with a smile and don't take it to heart. That's why we do it, because deep down inside, whether we admit it in public or not, we know you're a cool kid.
