Buddy Holly and the Crickets
were good friends of the Everlys.
Indeed when I saw Don and Phil for the first time at Derby England on their 1960 tour
their backing group was the original Crickets (Joe Maudlin and Jerry I Allison)
the text of that old New Musical Express article reads:-
SUSTAINED applause greeted drummer Jerry Allison and. bassist Joe B. Mauldin when The Everly
Brothers introduced their "very wonderful accompanists" to the packed audience at Birmingham
Odeon - last date of the pair's British concert tour-on Tuesday evening. And it's been like
that all along the line! For, although they have caused much mystery by not being billed as
such, Jerry and Joe-plus newcomer Sonny Curtis, an excellent guitarist
- are, in fact, The Crickets, the instrumental group who were once
co-starred with the late Buddy Holly and who still record under that name
Why no billing? Many fans of the trio have written to ask this
question. Jerry supplied the answer."The point is that whenever possible,
we like to work with Don and Phil and when we were offered a return
trip to Britain as their accompanying group, we jumped at the chance.
We'll be touring Australia with them in a similar capacity next month.
"The Crickets as a group, still exist, of course. In the States, we
play one-night-stand dates under our own name and continue to record
regularly for Coral.
"The reason we weren't billed here is that the plan for the tour
envisaged one American act-not two.

been right, because this was Phil's and Don's tour.

very active in their own right is the release by Coral early next month of
their latest disc, which couples "More Than I Can Say" with "Baby My Heart."
Since their last visit to Britain, both Joe and Jerry have married.
On Tuesday, Joe searched Birmingham for a suit for his wife Sherry,
who expects their first baby later this year.
The name of Jerry's wife is already familiar to disc fans, since at least
two records have been dedicated to her - "Peggy Sue" and its sequel
"Peggy Sue Got Married." Oddly enough, Jerry didn't write either*
they both came from the pen of their late friend Buddy Holly.
With the addition of Sonny Curtis -who, like Jerry and Buddy, hails
from Lubbock, Texas-The Crickets are still a top attraction on the U.S.
"big beat" scene.Good news for their many thousands of fans is that they have
no intention of breaking up or dropping tbeir famous name.
How do The Everly Brothers like working with The Crickets? Speaking
on behalf of his brother, Don told me: "They're great, just great. We've
been very good friends for many years now, and have always admired
their -fine musicianship. It's always a pleasure to work with Jerry, Joe
and Sonny, and we plan to team up as often as we can."

Background
In 1958 Buddy and the original Crickets split
So when Buddy started his final and fatal tour in January 1959 he recruited replacements, the bass player was a protege of his from LubbockTexas called Waylon Jennings who was given only few days to learn to play bass, He later spent the rest of his life rueing a last minute joke with Buddy
"I hope your damn old plane crashes" (legend has it that he lost his seat on that plane in a coin toss)
and he once appeared on stage with Gord and Harry Chapin

Neil Young of course was part of Crosby Stills Nash and Young
CSNY was hugely successful, but perhaps they're over-hyped. One could say that CSNY was neither as good nor as important as two of the bands whose leaders originally formed it - David Crosby's Byrds, and the Stills-Young dominated Buffalo Springfield (Graham Nash came later from the Hollies, who continued without him; and yes, I'm well aware that the Byrds were "really" Roger McGuinn's band).
One person intimately involved with the Byrds and who frequently mentions McGuinn was Gord's ex concert sound engineer Richard Harison

Moving on there is a wonderful 1996 issued Holly tribute album "Not Fade Away"
featuring amongst others
Nancy Griffith (who herself recorded "10 Degrees And Getting Colder)
and the Hollies whose own recording of "Peggy Sue Got Married" was used as a backing to the original Buddy Holly recording.
But for me the standout track is an extremely poignant interpretation of one of the last songs that Buddy wrote "Learning The Game".

This in turn would have neatly led to my penultimate point.
I was quite sure that Mark's guitar riff on one track on the final Dire Straits album
1991's "On Every Street"(the very last vinyl album I bought)
is a near duplicate of that on "Baby Step Back"
but having dug the LP out and played it I am now not so sure
So more research required sorry!!
OK so my final point a sad film that I very much like is the remake of A Star Is Born
in which Barbra Streisand plays the wife of Kris Kristopherson.
I happen to rather like her voice and her cover of IYCRMM
