For me...Phil Collins (boring, droning)

*most 90's and 00's music
(most of it is digital noise from
sample to rap with
no melody)

*Madonna...all sex and little
talent.

*All death metal

*Garth Brooks

*90's and 00's country (not
county and not western either
...closer to cheesey rock)

Have fun with this topic...a good chance to let off some steam and remember the above is just my opinion. Now what about yours?

Well for me, the only artist I listen to is Gord, the only music I have is Gord, I guess that sums it up for me, LOL.

I don't like rap or any kind....I am fortunate to have a son who loves jazz...I really don't have time for bad country either

Definately don't care for rap, hip hop, hard rock and most country.
I do however like Ian Tyson a lot. He's another story teller that tells very much of my lifestyle.
I also like 50's and 60's rock and some classic rock.
I've heard on the radio someone that did a remake of "If you could read my mind", he didn't totally butcher it but I don't like the "twang" that he put in it either. I'm not sure who it is that did it.

At last - someone else who cannot stand
Garth Brooks! Thank the Lord. I was beginning to think it was me. Neither doI like Madonna - anything about Madonna.
There's more but you happened to mention my
two pet hates and I just had to jump in.
Back later.

And I cannot abide Celine Dion. Sorry. I never could stand singers who SCREAM out notes. We have Shirley Bassey over here who does similiar - dont like her much either.
Whitney Houston - I knew I'd come back to her!
Just leave me my Gord CD's and I am a
very happy pixie ... LOL

Hi classicmixdj,

Thanks for a good topic, I'd like to give a more generalized answer.

First of all, here is an obvious statement on a Gordon Lightfoot discussion forum on a Gordon Lightfoot website :

Everything else pales compared to Gordon Lightfoot's music, so when I think about other artists, I never compare their work to Gordon Lightfoot. He's playing in another league.

Sorry for wording the obvious, now back on topic:

There are no specific groups / artists I dislike as such, but what I cannot stand at all are 'artificial' groups or artists.

By 'artificial' I mean bands and artists that exist just because a record company evaluated the latest market polls and formed a group accordingly.

They target a specific customer profile - like 9 to 13 year old girls - and start 'castings' for their new super-band.

To accomodate the widest possible target audience, they choose a blonde and a black haired one, one with a hispanic look and one with an afro-american look. They evaluate hundreds of applicants, and the most favored by the marketing people get their ticket to celebrity status.

I hate that, but I'm afraid it will even become worse in future because it obviously works to create thousands of record sales.

I am not listening to any techno-or trash music either, but if someone comes up with something original and people like the style of music that is played - why not. Different people, different taste. I will put down my hat to any "noise" or "hardrock" band that achieved something in their community out of their own, or by being the most devoted or skilled.

Oh, and while I'm ranting (I love this topic) one more thing: I also dislike remakes of old songs. Recently, a lot of ABBA songs have been remixed. What for? Just to add stronger percussion and a stronger beat? If the original creators of the song would have wanted that, wouldn't it have been like that all along? In my opinoin, these new releases of songs are just a cheap rip-off. I like the original versions of the songs, I don't need louder percussion or a faster tempo. Just leave them as they were, and don't mess them up.

I have to agree with Florian - I am not a fan of re-makes. I think I may have brought that up a long time ago as to why I don't like Linda Rondstadt. How hard is it to have a hit with a song that already was a major hit earlier? I love her voice but I never got the purpose of her doing other people's hits - especially years and years later.
When I hear an old song being re-done on the radio the first thing that comes to mind is - WHY? Let me hear the original. I'm old and cranky - don't tick me off! LOL
The bands that are manufactured are pathetic - they all sound the same with the same songs! Get up and write a song, play an instrument, stop hopping around like you've got ants in your pants! LOL
