New topic title as requested by an Englishwoman with a narrowband connection!!
After the empty house the previous week I was relieved that last Friday a much bigger crowd of ten Lightheads from around the globe met in Rik Steven's Chat room
including:-
Ron from Australia
Gaby from middle England
Kim in California
Sue from Colorado and
a very welcome reappearance by Bill in New York
Ohio Connecticut and New Jersey were also represented
Tonight we hope to see Newsgroup poster Douglas Crowe and honorary bartender Ed Mullen.
Erica (Erkie aka sundreme@aol.com and I have been trying to persuade Gaby to install mIRC (it should prevent her being bumped so much).Erica offered to give Gaby instructions by e-mail as she considers that the instructions on my tutorial page at:-
http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
are too complex. Very sorry I tried to make
getting then configuring this Chat Client as easy as possible but obviously not enough. So any pointers on how to improve the
information I present there will be much appreciated
Otherwise the easiest way to gain access to the room is this simple link using your browser:-
http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com

TONIGHT AT 9pm EST

Oops I composd last week's advert too quickly obviously:-
We had a most gratifying number of chatters last Friday including Rick a newcomer from Reno to whom Gaby and I introduced the existence of the corfid Discussion Forum.
He wasted no time and has already opened a topic about a new poster. We were also able to welcome back a fan from Vermont where I believe they make wood-burning stoves (which I know are actually sold in England) so "woodstove" don't wait so long for another visit!!
Prolific Newsgroup poster Douglas Crowe from Kentucky also debuted plus some fellow apparently Somewhere Up In Michigan turned up to converse.
Again tonight I will be there to welcome everybody who wishes to avail themselves of Ed Mullen's generosity with the bottle!!
9 PM EST/2AM GMT in Rik Steven's Chat Room at:-
http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
or via mIRC

(Gaby I hope that you have now downloaded a fully functional mIRCinstallation file)
finally it has been suggested thst anybody on their own on New Years Eve could meet in the room. I expect that Susan and I will be busy with the family so will likely have to give it a miss. If there is such a meeting (suggested time the usual 9PM EST) perhaps somebody who is sober on January the First could post a short report here

Some six people met in the chat room last Friday (the 26th) plus I believe I just missed "Renorick"
I must first apologise for omitting to follow up on my earlier note regarding a proposed chat session for anyone on their own on New Year's Eve. We did look in a couple of times (approx 9.30 PM EST and just after midnight) but found nobody there. Hopefully this could be arranged on a more
definite footing at the end of this year. Meanwhile tonight should be a regular chat at 9PM EST or 2 AM GMT at:-

Last Friday saw a good gathering of 9 fans in Rik's chat room including
someome from Somewhere Up In Michigan
and a rare visit by ther room's founder Rik Steven's
plus a welcome return by Page from Alabama who had obviously lost the
Chat room link (she admitted failing to read these adverts on either the
Newsgroup or on the corfid Discussion Board. The subject of the Yahoo
chat room which was abandoned due to unreliability but offerred live voice chat came up
since the guitar chat people have found thas it is now behaving itself.
so perhaps tonight we might discuss its revival further.
same place:- http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
same time 9PM EDT or 2 am GMT or "elevenses" down under

We had a bumper attendance last week .No less than 15 came in at various times including founder Rik Stevens (again) Gaby in England and Steve in Plano Texas. plus welcome first visits by Pete in Arlington VA and a nice surprise visiy by Ron Jenkins a.k.a. takitimu/murihikukid in South Island New Zealand after a rapid e-mail exchange with myself in which Ron asked questions that I knew Ed Mullen (who was in the chat room) would be able to answer . We did not get around to discussing reopening the Yahoo chat room group (with its live voice/microphone feature) and after further thought I recall that several potential chatters had great difficulty getting in when it was still active so for now Rik's Room is it
So I hope a goodly number will meet again this evening at:- http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
which I feel is a little easier to remember than the actual url:- http://chat.cjb.net/gordonlightfootchat
Either link will get you there but it is really better to use the mIRC client program(me)
full details of which you can read at:- http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
oh yes the times
basically it is 9pm EST
(GMT minus 5 hours)
(any earlier is too early for anyone on the U.S. West coast)
examples:-
Portland Oregon and California
6PM PST (GMT minus 8 hours)
Great Britain
2 AM GMT (Saturday morning)
or in Melbourne (on Saturday afternoon) (GMT plus 11 hours)
i.e. 1PM DST (which ends on March 28th 2004)
and Ron hope to see you again on Saturday afternoon)
NZ (GMT plus13 hours)
i.e. 3PM DST (just to confuse the issue NZ DST ends on March 21st!!)
With any luck either Char or Jenney or both will drop in to expand on their exciting time in Toronto last weekend

It is a fact of life in Lightfootfanland that there are two main resources for posting messages
and queries. The oldest being the Newsgroup
which can conveniently be accessed via Google Groups at:- http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com (which route gives you access to the complete thread archive back to 1995
Many prefer the posibly lighter side of the Corfid Discussion Forum at:- http://www.corfid.shorturl.com
that link takes you directly to the main "Gordon Lightfoot" Forum but there are some pearls to be found on the other "Small Talk" Forum
I am often surprised at how many fans who frequent one of the above are unaware of the existence of the other.I am aware that there are those who do not like looking at the Newsgroup and confine themselves to looking at the corfid only and vice versa. In My Humble Opinion each of these courses of action deprives
them of interesting items on the one they are not visiting.Granted that I am also aware that not many are as fortunate as I am to have the time to keep up with both.
It has occurred to me that as I already advertise the Friday Chat room every Friday I could use that as a convenient place to highlight some of the more interesting threads/topics that have arisen in the previous 7 days
If anyone finds this is too boring please let me know and I wont waste my time and efforts further.)(I'll try to limit the number of tpyos I am bound to make with my enforced single finger typing method!!
Newsgroup highlights w_e 23rd January 2004
Following on from last week's revelation that EMP were onto Ed Mullen for trying to bring pleasure to many Lightfoot fans by hosting the CBC videos and a couple of bootleg concerts on his site are various threads
including many thoughtful expressions of opinion on making such items
available including criticism of those who appear to only want to line their pockets by peddling things on ebay
and
A New Topic...If you got to spend a day with Gord, what would you do?

highlights of the week on corfid
Wed
I brought up the subject of Ed Ringwald a.k.a.Pee Wee Charles and his web site http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001974.html
Also after I had refound and posted the link to a (slightly) amusing IYCRMM parody
Walter Lamont otherwise known to the cognoscenti as "the B" (for Borderstone) presented a parody of a parody of IYCRMM http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001975.html
Thursday/Friday
meanwhile on the "small talk" board a new
Topic: bush's address to the american people!!
is generating a fine verbal sparring match http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000257.html
and now the weekly commercial break
Last Friday the chat Room saw a dozen chatters
Tonight at the same time 9PM EST

OK advert and highlight time
first the week on the Newsgroup:-
This week it was the turn of the Newsgroup to host a sometimes acrimonious debate
It began with a harmless advert by Jerry Lang from Ireland who wanted to sell some
autographed vinyl lps to raise money for his children's education and ran into a vitriolic stream
inspired by recent criticism of those peddling an unending list of bootlegs and autographed items
on ebay, Eventually Jerry revealed that he runs an on-line radio station upon which he plays Gord
Char found yet another time wasting game to succeed the "batting pinguins" one
Melissa Joe brightened everybody's week by pointing out that Harmony if still on
schedule was due in 90 days. Ron Jones in Vancouver promptly announced that he did not have a
bootlegged copy
on the same theme
sammys da one tried to set up trading for 5000 shows on DVD
Douglas Crowe asked in return if he had the Pat Boone does Van Halen music DVD?
felicitations on Val's birthday were presented then Bruna's
Meanwhile over on the corfid forum
a short topic thread on a review of the Beautiful tribute album in Acoustic Guitar magazine http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001965.html
brought the revelation that an associate editor there is a "fellow Gord fan".
the very acrimonious debate at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000257-2.html
on last week's George W Bush speech was suitably lightened by Cathy Cowette's
highlighting the pinguin site
and after that site got over-accessed Violet Blue Horse found that it had moved to another site http://meph.eu.org/
the presidential theme has finally found its target at:- http://www.dancingbush.com/
see topic http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000273.html
Ed Mullen you must turn on the music to get the full disco experience!!
which is even better than an earlier mocking site (that I was quite surprised to find is still up there~):- http://www.toostupidtobepresident.com/
I see that that site is bang up, to date with a section entitled:-
"Top 11 reasons to invade Mars." including such pearls of wisdom as:-
5. The invasion will pay for itself through the sale of Mars' ample reserves of Mars bars
OK enough tomfoolery
Last friday at least 7 met in the chat room including a return visit by Pete from Arlington VA and the founder (old Rik himself)
so let's try again this evening at9 PM EST (or 2 AM GMT) at:- http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com

Oops I should now apologise to those avid republicans reading my advert for offending you
But on the tstbp site
I missed this one at first
2. Mars itself is an intermediate goal, the ultimate prize is the natural gas of Uranus.
And you must click on the salon.com link
which features more great stuff including:-
"Expanding space exploration is a wonderful aspiration for America and humanity --
and also quite promising for the Houston economy"

I see that that site is bang up, to date with a section entitled:-
"Top 11 reasons to invade Mars." including such pearls of wisdom as:-
5. The invasion will pay for itself through the sale of Mars' ample reserves of Mars bars

John,

I'm not offended but for some historical perspective: I'm old enough (50 1/2) to remember some folks snickering at then President Kennedy's plan to be the first nation to land men on the moon. So, let's see how this idea looks 35 years from now. I'll contact you from the old folks home, LOL.

Bill

I wasn't there but I hear the Wright Bros. took a lot of heat too.....

OK it's Friday again and time for this week's list of highlights and the chat room advert
corfid highlights
1. the main Gordon Lightfoot forum at http://www.corfid.shorturl.com
Walter/Borderstone
nominated as
"The Lightfoot Of the Week."
newcomer AZroute74 (one Judy Coyle) who explained her nom de plume as
"I've adopted it because State Route 74 in AZ is the source for the song; it is the Carefree Highway."
Of course she is quite incorrect as the fabled highway which leads to the megalopolis of Carefree is but one road leading
off Route74
as clearly shown on my pic at:- http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/carefre...ehwysign4..jpg

read Judy's first post:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001988.html
to find out"Why? For going out and starting over where some might have given up"
There were a pair of new Brit posters on corfid this week
both debuted at the end of a lengthy topic
"Favorite Lightfoot Song & Why? II" at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000055-9.html
first Katrine a Horticulturist
who stated
"I first saw Gordon Lightfoot when he hosted a series of TVshows here in the UK way back in 1963.
I have been a fan ever since.
Unfortunately he never tours here, so we feel a bit deprived."
In 1963 I personally was to busy swatting up for my London University finals to watch television so missed those landmark
shows altogether and it was not until I heard "Spin Spin" on Montreal radio in 1966 that I became hooked perhaps Katrine
could recount what she remembers of those shows. Did Gord sing and what??
Soon after Katrine Mair )(a teacher from Welsh Wales) popped (pooped/poped) out of the woodwork
I trust that Bruna Zanelli a.k.a silverheels has added them both to her growing list of UK fans
and that one or the other might venture to Toronto for the hoped-for 2005 Massey convention
since it has been known for years that Gord is unlikely to return to the UK for a tour.
So you'll have to come over here and join the several hundred Lightheads that are bound to congregate in Toronto
This leads to the week's most significant good news
Gord has the stomach-muscle strenthening surgery on Feb 17th and contrary to earlier rumours
"Gordon Lightfoot says vocal cords fine"
Funny I always thought they were "vocal chords" but no cords they are!!!
Of course the accompanying bad news was that the release of "Hermony" has slipped back a fortnight to May 11th
but thanks to Wayne Francis' source we already know the 11 song titles
2. Meanwhile over on the "Small Talk" forum an initially innocent topic concerning the schoolboy love life of one DMD3 or "Dunkin' Douglas" as I like to refer to him soon developed into a lively discussion on marriage women's greed etc
there was also a charming confession about an old GL Tee shirt by Char at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000282.html
On the other hand The Newsgroup at:- http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com
started the week badly on Saturday morning with Bill Hall's sad news about his daughter Dana.
Both boards had links to new fun sites to supercede the earlier pinguin bashing experiences of those with time in their hands
.............................................
OK now the Chat Room commercial
Following a sparse attendance of only 7 last Friday
I hope more will venture in this evening
I will be e-mailing Bruna later to try to persuade her to attend
Tonight at 9PM EST

OK it's Fiday the 13th (lucky for some I trust)
and this very evening we will hope to see a good crowd in the chatroom
Last week's 9 which included a talented singer/guitarist lady from
Austin Texas was encouraging
But first the past week's highlights (as I see them anyway):-
CORFID HIGHLIGHTS

http://www.corfid.shorturl.com

there's a very nice Topic: Question for the new and younger posters
asking how lightheads got hooked at:-

http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001896.html
Another interesting Topic: Your least played album at:-

http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002018.html
And another Topic: OK, who sang it? at:-

http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002017.html
concerning another version of DSMMN
In researching my reply I found a nice site:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002017.html
which sports a bio and an extensive discography
clicking on the album cover thumbnails will show the album track
listing and in most cases each track has a link to a short 30 second
audio (Real Media) clip
useful if you want to check on one of Gord's songs that you might find
is not included in the many clips on Val's site:-

http://www.gordonlightfoot.com
where for example she has all 88 tracks on the Songbook Box Set
I brought this up because there has been a spate of late on corfid of
confessions by a number of people who are not yet fortunate enough to
own every GL album
sking which one to buy next and/or declaring that they have never
heard a particular song and a 30-second sample could therefore be
useful to them

NEWSGROUP HIGHLIGHTS
on the newsgroup alt.music.lightfoot at:-

http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com
Highlight of the week was undoubtedly the discovery/announcement by
Jenney regarding the upcoming new album "Harmony" that
"There will be a single released of
Inspiration Lady, and a video! The video has already been taped, and
from what
I hear is great."
thread "Inspiration Lady from Harmony"
I would advise hurrying over there pronto (not Toronto) because some
troll posted a message
under the subject: "alt.music.lightfoot down the pan"
Meanwhile Douglas Crowe continued to be troubled medically and
received an offer of help from a new poster (a doctor) who practices in Brazil
Ron a.k.a. blackbery wine created a minor hoo ha by bringing up his
discovery of more recordings at the alt.binaries.mp3.bootlegs
newsgroup but fortunately gave it the very same subject name as an
earlier thread about the Reno recording in 2000 by "duff"
Your very alert reporter spotted that both Duff and Douglas reside in
Lexington Kentucky So I have sent them an e-mail suggesting that they
meet tonight in the snug and welcoming gathering place known as old
rik's chat room. (actually Rik Stevens is not that old!!)
Now where was I oh yes this evening's chat
as usual
9 PM EST at:-

http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
to avoid getting bumped as Gaby did last week
take a close look at the mIRC chat client
fully illustrated details at http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
