I just watched Canadian Idol and at the beginning they show some footage of wilderness, a big lake, and Gordon Lightfoot in a Canoe. There is another man in the canoe and I know I've seen him before (another singer???). It's driving me crazy that I can't think of his name.
Does anyone know who was in the canoe with Gordon?

JJ,that clip is from Jan. 1st 1967 and can be seen (B & W only, sorry) on one of the threads titled CBC Archives or something like that.

Use the search option here on the home page and then type in CBC archives in the blank top space, the rest is easy.

Actually Lyle wasn't even an egg back then. And TheWatchman was in another canoe, but that was some years later. But I can see the resemblance and why it would be easy to confuse the two.

the guy in the boat was MUrray and the clip JJ is talking about is a new one they dug up somewhere-it was very clear and back in the late 60's obviously. he looked so beautiful. it wasn't the clip of CRT with the navvies etc.
It was cool the way they pieced together CRT with the different clips of him singing a different line in each one.could have been the whole show! too short for sure!

It was Murray McLauchlan and it was from a show Murray did which first aired on July 1, 1985 (Canada Day). He took his float plane and flew across Canada and met different songwriters who performed a song in different settings. Gord performed "Gotta Get Away."

We definitely need to nag that clip outta CTV. They're holding out on us!! I'd also like to see that biography clip. When that first aired, I lived right across the Juan de Fuca Strait from Vancouver Island. So I got it on regular TV and I still missed it. ARGH.

I think it aired on CBC and was called "Floating over Canada." It also featured Buffy Saint-Marie and Levon Helm (he sang Acadien Driftwood.

Here is a line from the Canadian Encyclopedia about Murray: "He returned to the hinterland theme for the CBC TV travelogue/music video Floating Over Canada in 1985."

It was really delightful hour-long special.
