LIGHTFOOT and Lanois joins musical lineup for Voices of Habitat
CHANTAL CHAMBERLAND

An unearthly musical experience featuring raw Canadian talent is what audience members can expect at the Voices for Habitat concert Wednesday evening.

Multiple Grammy Award-winning producer Daniel Lanois will be performing on guitar alongside Gordon Lightfoot producer and Grant Avenue Studio owner Bob Doidge, jazz vocalist Chantal Chamberland and folk singer/songwriter Caroline Wiles.

Their goal is to raise $50,000 for Hamilton's Habitat for Humanity.

"The artists we have lined up are unbelievable," said Doidge, who organized the concert. "People will be blown away by what happens on stage."

All proceeds raised will go to Habitat's building program. The charitable organization constructs affordable housing for low income families. Right now, it's working on three homes on Burton Street and four single family homes in the beach strip area.

"Habitat for Humanity is providing families a place to raise their kids properly and I think that's brilliant and worth supporting," said Doidge.

Volunteers build good quality, low-cost homes and the organization provides interest-free mortgages with a longer payment period than banks usually offer. Families are required to make payments of about 25 per cent of their income each month.

In return, they have decent and affordable accommodations they can call their own.

This is Voices for Habitat's second year raising money for the cause.

"This is an example of how the musical community gets together to make a difference and it is happening right here in Hamilton," said Paul DeCourcy, Habitat for Humanity's manager of development.

"This is proof you can build a better community without a hammer and nails," he added.

Also performing at Voices for Habitat are drummer Danny Lockwood and Gordon Lightfoot's guitarist, Carter Lancaster.

The event is taking place at the Dofasco Centre for the Arts and tickets can be obtained at the Theatre Aquarius box office. Those who make a donation will receive a tax receipt.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and music starts at 7:30. Afterwards there will be a reception and silent auction.

Habitat for Humanity Hamilton provides a "hand up not a hand out" to families through our homeownership program. Through the participation of volunteers from our community we build safe, decent homes which are then sold with a no interest mortgage to our partner families. Homeownership provides a means for families to reach their potential, and provide a rich future for their children. Habitat Hamilton is a partner in the global movement that sees adequate housing as a basic human right.
