I like the last line of Ordinary Man..."I remember all the good times/There's a ghost in every room.
|
"Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?" That line from The Wreck contains such powerful imagery it is absolutely stunning. One of the greatest lyrics in songwriting history!
------------------ "be calm in the face of all common disgraces...and know what they're doin' it for..." |
"And the rustle of her hair upon his skin"
from Apology. Out of context it may seem simple, but when read with the rest of the verse...the utter love and heartbreak it implies that he was experiencing as his ex-love was in the arms of another cuts to my core. |

These lines from "Welcome to Try" always make me smile.
Sitting alone in the Blue Ridge Saloon Is no place for an angel to be Ladies make faces at me I wonder what kind of faces the ladies are making at Gord. |
From "Shadows"...
"Let me reach out love and touch you Let me hold you for awhile I've been all around the world Oh how I long to see you smile" |
I find the line in the song,"Walls" about running around in socks "and that's what socks are for",very amusing! When I first heard the song, like most people,I thought the song was over and then suddenly there's one more verse. It still gets a bit of a laugh from me. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif It's been the B! Catch ya on the flipside of Sundown! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif

This is difficult. It's like trying to name the best songs, least favorite songs, best folk artists, etc. Even though I've been listening to Lightfoot since the 60's, when he became my favorite artist, I went though the lyrics of songs on this site, all of which I am most familiar with, and compiled three pages of "lines", far to many to present. Here are a few:
How long, said she, can a moment like this / Belong to someone / What's wrong, what is right, when to live or to die / We must almost be born / So if you should ask me what secrets I hide / I'm only your lover, don't make me decide She touched his grizzled fingers / And she called him by his name / And then he heard the joyful sound / Of children at their games In an old house on a hillside / In some forgotten town / Where the river runs down / From the forest And it shines on and on 'til all sadness is gone / And if children had wings I would sing them this song / With a smile on my face and a tear in my eye / Everything will be fine by and by If you think you need someone who needs you, you know I will always be there / I'll do it although I'm not supposed to care We were children, you and me / Let us pray for the ones they call / The children of today Roses are waiting for dewdrops to fall / Climbing your windows and walls / Bells in steeple are ringing, singing / Listen to them talk about your love's return The patriot's dream still lives on today It makes mothers weep and it makes lovers pray / Let's drink to the men who got caught by the chill / Of the patriotic fever and the cold steel that kills I'm just a name, that's all / Scratched upon your wall / You've used it well, but what the hell / That's what walls are for ------------------ restless shadows |

I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
From "Song for a Winter's Night"...this line just sort of puts things in perspective for me. When you get right down to it, the most important thing in life is to be near the person/people that you love. |

I like this line.

not so much the "words" but more the melody and the way he sings "heaven help the devil, let him have a few unpleasant memories"
and also the line "this time tomorrow we may all be packed and gone". makes me sigh and feel good about it every time |
"Once inside we found a curious moonbeam doing dances on the floor"

What song is that from Gary?

If I'm not mistaken, Gary, isn't that from Van Morrison? This is the Gordon Lightfoot forum!

Try "Now and Then".

"I'm on my second cup of coffee and I still can't face the day"

There are so many special lines and this is one of the best, IMO:
'If there's a friend who needs me, I'll try to help somehow.' |
