What's the worst cover of a Lightfoot song you can imagine (or know of for real?) I don't know why but the idea of The Cowsills doing The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald makes me queasy <g>.

There was a hip hop\alternative group
that did a rap\rock version of "sundown" a few years back. Pretty bad, although I suppose it introduced some kids to Gordon. I guess no matter how bad a remake is, it still must be compliment to GL. What do you think? |
A hip-hop version of Sundown? God save the universe! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

That's easy no question the two parodies by John Valdy a.k.a. Dr. Dirty (Sundown and the Wreck)are as disgusting as you could imagine, If you ever have the misfortune to hear either of these make quite sure you are within pewking range of something commodious!!

Sundown – The Darkness
Carefree Highway – The White Stripes Betty Called Me In – Queen |
BILLW – You’re not alone – I can live with the Elwood version, too. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

How about this : " The Backstreet Boys" doing
an extended dance version of "Rainy Day People"!!!!!!AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! I can't even joke about something like that, I'm getting nauseous. P.S. I promise never to let the words backstreet boys leave my fingers and enter this forum ever again!!! Doug |

True ... but he had better NEVER get near to any Gord song, as far as I'm concerned. (I need a 'threatening' smilie... how do I get one of those?) LOL |
No assumption of awfulness here but I just read of another cover album, including one of Gord's songs:
"Mavericks vocalist Raul Malo, and Nashville pals Pat Flynn, Rob Ickes, and Dave Pomeroy come together next week with their Nashville Acoustic Sessions album on CMH Records, covering Roy Orbison's “Blue Bayou,” Gordon Lightfoot's “Early Morning Rain,” The Louvin Brothers' “Great Atomic Power,” and other songs by Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Gram Parsons and Jimmie Rodgers… " http://www.anchoragepress.com/archiv...ol13ed12.shtml Good company to be in - hope they do it justice. |
Raul Malo has an incredible voice! I've heard him do Blue Bayou in an acoustic song-circle once, and you would have sworn it was Roy Orbison. I think I might have to get this album http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif

I know i may be in the minority, and Joveski will disagree! but as much as i love Dylan, i don't care for his version of "Early Morning Rain". Although Elvis' version is very nice, and Gord himself has mentioned it favourably. Incidentally, irish duo Foster and Allen do a very irish sounding "Song for a Winters Night", and make it sound like a different song! if you like that sort of thing!.....
|
yes Dan, i disagree http://www.corfid.com/ubb/smile.gif he's done some very nice live versions of it in the late 80s and early 90s. also the live versions of Im not supposed to care from 1998 are breathtaking.

I mentioned in my Borderstone Tapes thread that Olivia Newton-John covered,"If You Could Read My Mind" on her "Let Me Be There" Lp. It was either re-named or mistakenly titled<"If I could Read "Your" Mind". ONJ is a talented woman with an unforgettable voice (and is very beautiful on her LP covers!) but she never should have done this! It takes a deep brooding love song and turns it into an MOR DJ's worst nightmare! She's on key but off base for this selection. Sorry Olivia! I like you but leave the originals alone. http://www.corfid.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif Later! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif

Theres a station here in England called Magic FM which once played an awful lounge sounding version of "If You Could Read My Mind". It may have been Perry Como. To hear such a beautiful song drenched in strings and a choir is devastating!

Here's the Billboard review of the Nashville Acoustic Sessions:
****************************************** RAUL MALO, PAT FLYNN, ROB ICKES, DAVE POMEROY Album Title: The Nashville Acoustic Sessions Producer(s): John Wooler Genre: COUNTRY Label/Catalog Number: CMH Records 8709 Release Date: March 30 Source: Billboard Magazine Originally Reviewed: April 10, 2004 When Mavericks singer Raul Malo teams with classy pickers Pat Flynn (guitar), Rob Ickes (dobro) and Dave Pomeroy (bass) to interpret some songwriting titans, the results are at times quite extraordinary. That's certainly the case on a swaying, mesmerizing "Blue Bayou," an insistent take on Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain" and a goosebump-inducing treatment of Hank Williams' "Weary Blues From Waitin'." Indeed, the quartet's choice of material is impeccable, from the Louvin Brothers' wry "The Great Atomic Power" and Bob Dylan's appreciative "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" to a tender, powerful rendition of Gram Parson's "Hot Burrito #1." The pickin' is top-shelf on the latter and Jimmie Rodgers' "Waiting for a Train," then equally fine on "Moon River," a testament to musicianship and taste. Malo is truly a vocalist for the ages, and this project is a quiet glory.—RW |
All I can say is, you better be GOOD if you plan on remaking anything this man has done first! LOL

Here's the review from the Miami Herald of the cover CD which includes Gord's Early Morning Rain:
The Nashville Acoustic Sessions CMH Records *** ½ Three seasons of American Idol and its various spinoffs haven't killed the art of superb interpretive singing. Not if the latest CD from Mavericks singer Raul Malo and three top-flight bluegrass musicians can be entered into evidence. The beautifully recorded Nashville Acoustic Sessions is a refreshingly casual effort -- voice, guitar, dobro and bass. It's the kind of simple record you'd imagine recording with friends in your living room if you had this kind of talent. With his pure tenor, Malo is just right singing this CD's well-chosen selections which range from Henry Mancini to Bob Dylan to Hank Williams. Roy Orbison's Blue Bayou is a natural fit. Malo also shines on Gordon Lightfoot's Early Morning Rain, the Louvin Brothers' The Great Atomic Power, Gram Parsons' Hot Burrito #1, and the two departures into pop standards -- Moon River and (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons. The Nashville Acoustic Sessions was never intended to storm the country charts or land on the radio -- and it won't. But if you're a fan of good singing and playing you should seek it out. |
Let's not forget the 1998 discofied version of,"Read My Mind" by Stars on 54. From the movie,"54". While I don't think it's such a bad recording,I know most of you shudder at the thought! Despite that,it did hit the top 60 and actually rank higher than a few real GL singles did. Go figure. Benn me,later! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif

Here's one more I didn't imagine! While LP hunting today I noticed a 1974/75 Johnny Mathis LP called,"You've Got A Friend" an album of cover versions. Included:Johnny sings,"If You Could Read My Mind!" http://www.corfid.com/ubb/eek.gif No,I did not buy it. If I had I'd either be telling you how sickening it is or how hilariously bad it is! I just really don't want any more versions of that song in my head. Stars on 54 is one thing, but I already have Olivia Newton John's version in there! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/tongue.gif Been me,Aurevoir! http://www.corfid.com/ubb/cool.gif
