as I was saying on the Fitzgerald topic on the GL Forum...OK so far so good but nobody has yet answered the oft-asked question "how to post a picture on this bulletin board" I tried several times before I succeeded last week in making a my picture of a CNR diesel in Jasper Alberta stick
So I thought a short tutorial would help those members of the great unwashed public who are not as gifted as Al the Watchman!!! No insult intended or implied.
First of all you must be linking to a picture file that is already on a web page somwhere preferably your own so that it does not get removed at the site owners whim But you have no site I hear you protest??In fact your own site is not a difficult thing to set up just Google for "free web sites" and pick one that appeals to you from the over 4 million results Google currently displays.
Most free sites are suported by annoying advertising banners or pop-ups but for the purposes of this tutorial that is of no real consequence. I think all or most of them have a built-in system for uploading your files to your site. I usually go to http://www.freeservers.com (who I chose to host my own site http://www.johnfowles.org.uk and they feature an easy to use program called File Manager.
So create your site for example lets say you have ended up with http://www.veryownmysite.freeservers.com
As a real example this is an earlier site I opened http://johnfowles.freehosting.net
and you have uploaded a picture (named picture.jpg) to the root or lowest level on the site (of course you can create multiple folders to store your files and link accordingly
next you ascertain the exact URL (or web address) of the picture
in this case it will be quite simple http://johnfowles.freehosting.net/picture.jpg
Now verify that the link will function
So copy the exact web address into your browser's address bar
now the tricky bit
the Discussion forum utilises a simplified version of the usual web page "language" (HTML) which they call UBB Code
you simply type your message then add the appropriate UBB link to your masterpiece
The format for doing this is actually detailed if you click on the link "UBB Code is on" that appears in the left hand box under "your Reply " if you are replying to a posting
It tells you in the section “Adding Images”:-
"To add a graphic within your message, just encase the URL of the graphic image and the piece includes a sample link with the UBB Code in red).
So in[ my example I will include this line in my message
imghttp://johnfowles.freehosting.net/picture.jpg/img
I have deliberately omitted the sqare tag brackets [ and ] in the line above in an attempt to clarify matters
but if I then add them the picture SHOULD appear:-

if it does Bingo if it doesn't grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

OK see my post on the main forum DMD3

Amazing. I came back here to apologise for an inadverent cock-up in my original attempt to link to an exising freeservers web site that I own, because although the picture successfully linked originaly as witnessed by
DMD3 and me later it was replaced by a small box stating that I was not allowed to link to a free web space so hows about upgrading?
No thanks. So I went off and deletwd the file from the free site. I then uploaded it to a Yahoo group that I started for such purposes. Then I returned here and lo and behold the picture of the fitz at sunset is back in all its glory both in my original message and in DMD3's reply.
I can only think that my computer has dredged up a cached version of the page stored from my first look-see yesterday. In which case anybody looking at it for the first time will probably see the freeserver's notice again.
Anyway where was I?? Oh yes Yahoo
lets try this now

OK well if at first you don't succeed suck eggs as they say in England
Dang I just hate it when a carefully thought out trial refuses to work. But I am nothing if not tenacious in matters such as this
I could use a proper HTML hyperlink but the administrators have HTML turned off
so this will not work
but as you see above the UBB version just will not play ball for me
OK One more attempt at the UBB code method:-

this should create a hyperlink to the relevant Yahoo group feature

fitz at sunset

duh well So far so bad!!!
It is now very obvious that sa permsanent link yo a pic on as free freservers site is not allowed.
I tried umpteen times to add the URL to link to the pic on the Yahoo group but each time the exact sequence of characters I correctly pasted in got corrupted
I'll try here one more time then try another trick I have up my sleeve.

NBG (No Bloody Good)-Sorry Borderstone but my patience is getting rather thin by now as this silly program insists on moving the closing [/img] tag to an incorrect position thereby omitting the final characters from their correct place in the complete url.
No wonder the pic refuses to be shown
Another trick?? OK I have created a nice short url just a simple (fitzunset.shorturl.com)
which was working so let me try again

Well so far a complete waste of time
So lets try another trick

this is really too aggravating. If I copy the URL I put between the img tags and paste it the picture comes up fine
so why not using the correct UBB procedure??
to prove my point here is the URL as a normal hyperlink:- http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0SgApA70X358FCS*vW!LLtbO1jzr37y9CAoobFGEkffoUFDtbR E6TOqXuXFSh99UB4jYHqGPknCotrU1NPEcnK!Ugu7nmKy*ZvFz Vbl9DM2etKpzPpd0mlw/fitzsunset.jpg?dc=4675436 606995762918

Dang this URL works fine if pasted in so it had bl...y well better work this time
[img]http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0SgDOAuYXFKQFCS*vW!LLtbO1jzr37y9CAoobFGEkffoUFDtbR E6TOqXuXFSh99UBGH!9hMTt6HxTjpg54jqVGnTCLAOZsxhUQ8S Ead53inIyuvZiArL**A/fitzsunset.jpg?dc=467543[ /img] 6606995762918
dang the img link refuses to play ball but to prove that the URL is correct and functional I will now post a conventional hyperlink <A HREF="http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0SgDOAuYXFKQFCS*vW!LLtbO1jzr37y9CAoobFGEkffoUFDtbR E6TOqXuXFSh99UBGH!9hMTt6HxTjpg54jqVGnTCLAOZsxhUQ8S Ead53inIyuvZiArL**A/fitzsunset.jpg?dc=467543" TARGET=_blank>http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0SgDOAuYXFKQFCS*vW!LLtbO1jzr37y9CAoobFGEkffoUFDtbR E6TOqXuXFSh99UBGH!9hMTt6HxTjpg54jqVGnTCLAOZsxhUQ8S Ead53inIyuvZiArL**A/fitzsunset.jpg?dc=467543[/URL]</A> 6606995762918

So if that works perhaps the Watchman or some other genius can check where I obviously have gone wrong with my img link effort!!! PLEASE!!

Oh sod it after all this flaffing around. the picture I wanted to display is still not viewable so I have gone back to the web page I found it on so that I can link to it directly

Note:- to the pessimists amongst you
All I was really trying to do was find a way for people to upload to a site if they had no site of their own. there are in fact plenty of places to upload your own pics to but so far I have failed to find one where the pics own URL can be used with the UBB img tags. I will keep trying as and when a suitable site comes to my attention
But my conclusion so far is that it just is not possible

Try geocities.com This is where I used to upload pics when I posted pics on ebay auctions. All you had to do was use the link from geocities in the auction. This was years ago before ebay had their own picture services. The links were terribly long and easy to leave something out which would cause the picture to show up.

DMD3, I think that John is quite capable of putting a picture in his posts, providing that the picture is on a website somewhere.

I think he is trying to find out if he can post a picture without having a website or it already being on a web page somewhere.

In other words scanning a picture into your computer and putting it in your post.

I feel I possess the finest pair of feet east of the Mississippi. I would dearly love to post a picture here so you all can enjoy them as much as I do.

OK ad nauseam I made the mistake of googling for "finest feet" and certainly found a lot of dubious foot fetish sites with the sort of naughty pictures you would not like your grandmother to see!!! DMd3 you are too young do not try this at home!!
but many thanks Jim for clarifying the point of my endeavours. Yes you hit the nail on the head. I have yet to try Al Watchman's very welcome suggestion of a free geocities site but will do as and when I get a free moment or five

Sorry Johnfowles, I already tried it at home. I don't think I am to young. But that's not why I replied.

Someone on the main forum said 90% of the time you can include a picture in other forums. But if you can, is it the exact same way as it is here? For instance, do you still type IMG? Or is it different for each forum?

DMD3:-
It probably depends on what you mean by "other forums" . I expect that if the forums you have in mind are indeed run by UBB as Florian's corfid board/forum is then yes but only if the organisers of those particular forum have the "ubb code" turned on because the coding:-
[img[filename and location [/img]
is as far as I know purely a code that will only work here as it is not the same as the full official HTML code:-
&lt;img src= "picture file name and location"&gt; as used on actual web pages (the organisers as I read it have the option to turn HTML on or as here off.
It is possible to attach pictures to postings to some of the other forums such as the Newsgroup (alt.music.lightfoot)in exactly the same way you would attach them to an e-mail and some newsreaders including Outlook Express will indicate this by a paperclip icon or something alongside that posting. But because Google groups is a service that ignores binary files such as jpegs the newsgroup viewed via Google groups as at:- http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com
simply ignores any attachments.
Does that now fully answer your question??

I guess so. I've never tried on another forum and may not for awhile. Last night I showed my mom how to do it on this forum but I don't know if it will work on another forum.(I don't even know if she has a discussion forum she visits).
