The Toronto Maple Leafs held down top spot in Forbes' list of the most valuable NHL franchises released yesterday.
The business magazine judges the Leafs to be worth $448 million U.S., based on a formula that values the team at about 2.4 times annual revenue. The New York Rangers are second at $411 million and the Canadiens are third at $334 million.
All in all, 2007-08 was a great year for the NHL, with attendance, revenues and team values all increasing. The increase in the value of the Canadian dollar last season helped all the clubs north of the border.
The Vancouver Canucks are the eighth most valuable team at $236 million; the Ottawa Senators are No. 13 at $207 million; the
Calgary Flames are No. 15 at $203 million and the Edmonton Oilers are 20th at $175 million.
At the bottom end, the Phoenix Coyotes are ranked 30th, worth only $142 million
