What is the song Magnificent Outpouring about? By listening to the tune and not the lyrics , I may already have an idea, but I want everyone else's take first.

It's about a person who says a lot of wonderful things to get you to like or love them but usually never follow through on them or act like they never said it. There ya "B"!

Wasn't exactly the idea I had. Oh well, now I know. Thanks!

(I wonder, why is it that with so many of Gord songs I never seem to know what the song is mainly about? With Johnny Cash, I know what the song is about right away after the 1st listen. Perhaps Gord songs are more complex.)

COMPLEX! That sums up five decades of Lightfoot!

I haven't heard that one in awhile. I had to go look at the lyrics. What do you think it's about D?

It reads to me like the story of a man involved with a woman who's married. The old familiar story is "He doesn't really love me". But I could be really wrong. Would not be the first or last time.

D, the wonderful thing about all music is that it can mean something different to each of us and each person's thought would still be right. You might be surprised to find that Cash meant something different than what you concluded. It's less important what Gord meant when he wrote the song than what it means to you when you listen to it or read the lyrics ("you" being collective as opposed to singular). Like Violet, I'd be curious to hear what it meant to you.

I thought it was about 'the first one of the day' back before he stopped drinking. Sorry, I'm working on some puns for a new reference manual for beginners. I promise I'll stop soon - 'that's what he said'. Oops.....

'Magnificent Outpourring' is about excuses.

I love how the piano was recorded for this song...kind of sounds like a cross between a Hammond organ and an upright honky-tonk piano.

Violet: I thought it was about someone telling themselves that they still stood a chance with a lost loved one(lost by breakup) and that was the "old familiar story used a million times to please a million minds". And of course it's not true. I never could remember all the lyrics though. The tune also sounded like that's what it meant.

Janice: Some songs written by Cash may have different meanings, but have you ever heard I Still Miss Someone, Guess Things Happen That Way, or Tennessee Flat Top Box? They pretty much mean one thing, but not that that's bad . In fact, a lot of those love songs(including the 2 I just mentioned here) really hit the spot sometimes.

My personal favorite is that catchy little S&M tune "Alberta Bound."
