NHL to change tiebreaker rule: Report

By QMI Agency

The NHL plans to finalize a change to its regular-season tiebreaking system for 2010-11 at a Sept. 14 Board of Governors' meeting, according to ESPN. (Reuters file photo)

The National Hockey League is set to modify its tiebreaking system for determining the regular-season standings, according to a report by ESPN.com.

Under the new rule, if two teams are tied in points the first tiebreaker will be a combination of regulation time and overtime victories, with shootout wins excluded.

In the past, the first tiebreaker had been total wins of any kind.

The rule had been proposed by Columbus Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson at the general managers meetings back in March.

The change will give more weight to victories gained in some form of team play rather than by shootout.

oh, this is only eliminating shootout wins (leaving only regulation time + OT wins) when determining who gets in playoffs when two teams are tied at end of season

as for game tiebreakers, the shootout lives on but i heard them talking about dropping to 2 on 2 if there's no scoring after 5 minutes of 3 on 3

in an earlier thread i hinted at that and even to go to 1 on 1 if necessary

and if that doesn't work then the two goalies duke it out, lol

...maybe Jonathan Roy has a future after all

Im certain you must have heard of Patrice Cormier & saw the cheap shot he gave to one of Patrick Roy's player last spring.

This guy is from my hometown & was selected as captain for the Canadian team. It was like an honor for folks down here.( Folks could probably already see his name on the welcome to the village sign.) But he really blew it... big time, could have been a hero but ended up a thug. He could have killed that guy (imo)... almost tore his head from his shoulder.

In a game playing for team Canada while going to his bench he broke the nose of a Swedish player that was going on to the ice for a shift with a cheap elbow hit, and was benched for the remainder of that period. Not really the example a captain is supposed to show.

He had a promising future with the New-Jersey Devils but after that stupid hit, they traded him to Atlanta & Im not so sure he will ever play in the NHL ? If he does I sure do hope he will have learn something from all of this.

i do recall the incident(s) clearly, jjo...i think even Don Cherry felt sorry for that Swede, lol...and seeing the junior player in convulsions had my nostrils flaring about Patrice

i recall saying to a sidekick, 'his punishment should be that they surgically remove his elbows and just attach his forearm to humerus with some string...puppet-like

i'd not heard that NJ traded him (or how his victim faired), thx for the scoop
