Default Ledger interview-Feb.2008

from an interview at:
http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/392/story/247492.html
Gordon Lightfoot went from being a bank teller to a musical storyteller

WARNING This is one of those poxy self important newspaper sites who obviously think they are the answer to a maiden's prayer and unnecesarily require you to register. It was not a painless procedure on a friggin' dial up and I had to wait for their silly activation email After I followed the instructions a stoopid page popped up to inform me that the activation period had expired(after all of 4 minutes),However I was able to read the article under their "grace" arrangement where I was pleased to read:-

"There's no question he was finally feeling gratified for his decision to quit his "real job" as a bank clerk a decade earlier.
His co-workers at the bank "wondered why a person would actually do that," Lightfoot says, laughing. "What's this guy doing? Does he know what he's doing with his life?"
The young singer wasn't worried.
"I was 21 when that took place," he says. "I could still go back to work on a normal shift if I wanted to. I was never afraid to work.
"I'd have been quite happy to stay at the bank.""
"GORDON LIGHTFOOT ON...
... the song he wishes he'd written : Elton John's "Take Me to the Pilot" (written by Bernie Taupin).
... his favorite song that never became a hit : " 'In My Fashion.' It's on the 'Shadows' album. It's a wonderful song. We play that one every night."
... the album in his record collection that would most surprise someone : "Liona Boyd. I'd get out the classical."
... rehabilitation from his coma in 2002 : "I was afraid I wouldn't be able to sing again. I love performing, and the thought of recovering and not being able to do that was kind of scary.... The first time, I was there for 3 1/2 months, so I got to know some of the people. They would say, 'Are you going to have them bring your guitar over?' But my hands -- I couldn't really do anything with my hands at that point, either. Some of the doctors said, 'Maybe that'll be good for your hands.' I said, 'My hands will come back.' "

the Liona Boyd choice doesn't surprise me..she's a fabulous guitarist, she's been his opening act and they are longtime friends..

can't imagine his fear of not being able to sing or play again tho..

The man does have eclectic taste.

Thanks, Big Bad John. I know how it is having to register JUST to view something like this. But in your case, you were successful, whereas I'd joined for nothing.

Thank you Sir John. Great pic of Gord also. Looking forward to Massey and the fun that goes along with that wonderful event. Ron J.

Thanks. It's been nice to read these interviews. Last night I just kept thinking about what he said about his hands, and about the time spent in the hospital. Thank God for all the help he received.
