I am 24 years old, and have been inspired by Gordon Lightfoot for most of my life. I believe Affair on 8th Avenue is a truly great song. It is dark and sexy. It is one of those songs, that is best appreciated at night, or in the dark. I am also quite fond of Don Quixote, and Seven Island Suite.

I always thought "Affair.." was sexy because of what it leaves out of the narrative..

i know there's another post about this song but i don't recall if this was brought up. how come Gordon reversed the verses on the re-recording of it?

It was always one of my favorites. When I was 24 years old (25 years ago!!!!) I used to play it over and over again on my "record player". Yes! I still have the album up in my attic. Scratches and all. Good choice as a favorite.

Affair on 8th Avenue, arguably the most intimate thought-provoking song Gordon has created.
I've listened and listened, and tryed and tryed to write a song of equal genius.
I could not.
I may have some talent, but I am not gifted as if Gord. And such gifts as his must not pas on.

"Affair On The 8th Avenue" is the only song left out from the "Gords Gold" album, when it was released as a CD (to make the original 2LPs fit onto one CD). As all the other songs this is a re-recorded version, different from the original.
Is this one of the last tracks that are not available on any CD release ? (The version on "songbook" is also the original version).

United Artists has a fine, fine, CD available of all the work Gord did then.
3CD package - worth every penny.
The origianl 8th Avenue, everything. And I've found it impossible to live w/o The Sunday Concert.
The UA package is pretty well available in a store w/ a good folk section (Barnes & Nobles, Borders, etc.) Not Wal-Mart.

Yes, this is the only track from any "official" LP that was not released on CD. We can hope that at some point in the future, WB or Rhino decide to release Gord's Gold, remastered and with the one song restored as it will now fit. Thane Tierney, who produced all of the Rhino Lightfoot CDs, was well aware that this recording was not available on CD; it was a favorite of his too. Unfortunately, he is no longer at Rhino, so we'll have to hope somebody else takes up the cause.

Gotta agree with all here. This is one of Lightfoot's very best. I love the "Back Here On Earth" album. I remember seeing Lightfoot sing "Affair on 8th Ave" on the old Midnight Special show. Just incredible' simply didn't get any better than that.

I bought the Gord's Gold cd a few weeks ago; when i discover that there isn't "Affair" in it, i also bought a vinyl copy of the collection on e-bay!
I still don't understand why they choose to quit "Affair" to fit on one cd, instead of others like "Wherefore and Why" or "Steel rail blues" which are not so good....
I also look at the Gord recent years-setlists and i saw that it's been so long since he played this tune.
Only God knows how i love it.....
Hey, i also want to make a publi vote to bring back Gord to play in Europe.
John Fowles, do you know if Gord planned to tour Europe in the future?

correct me if i'm wrong, but i think Gordie loves Europe as much as he does Canada. Sometimes, Affair on 8th Avenue should have been followed by Murder on 9th Avenue, not?

Affair on 8th Avenue - Once in a Lifetime
At the Universal Ampiteater in LA, then open air, the band sat this one out as Gord played and sang the seldom sung Affair on 8th Avenue.
When, in the song, Gord posed the riddle - followed by "the pause" - a riveting silence prevailed.
10, perhaps 15 seconds slow-motion ticked by as Gord just stood there - stone still . . . and gazed out as a cat, who sees things we don't . . . curls wafting in the breeze . . . finally followed by the answer as The Affair resumed.
We could all breathe again.
Silence speaks loudly.
Perhaps the ultimate honor.
I have never been witness to such a moment again.
