How many GL songs are there in all? This includes unreleased tracks and tracks that he didn't write.

A very good question DMD 3 and one for which I have personally never seen a definitive answer
but in another thread today the "railway hall of fame" it says
"The
original ballad tells the tale of the building of the Canadian Pacific
Railway, and is one of 400 songs that he's written and recorded"
But it just so happens that I am working on a private Gord mp3 project for which I need a definitive answer so will work on it from the available published sources but off the cuff 400 sounds pretty close if you include songs on say the Warner-7 Arts demo disc
the Canadian Talent Library discs/albuns and the next "Eleven-on Twenty"!!!

I didn't have time to count them precisely but there are 220 to 250 songs if you click on "songs" on this website.
(If my estimation is as close as I think it is)

Sorry DMD3 but I bin busy so half not yet found time to work out a definitive answer
but the folowing is as far as I have got:-
1.basic list of the official releases from Val's alphabetical listing at:- http://gordonlightfoot.com/Songs.shtml
total:-223
this is based on Gord's 19 original albums plus the Songbook box-set and therefore includes the handful of songs that he did not write himself
And of course of these a fair number are available in more than one version/recording.
2.in addition to these official issues
there are a number of other actually published albums and bootlegs:-
2.1 Early Lightfoot (10 songs less 2 on Songbook (Remember Me I'm The One and It's Too Late He Wins less This is my Song (also on the Two Tones album)
2.2 Two Tones At The Village Corner) 12 songs
2.3 the CNR Movin EP 3 songs less Steel Rail Blues
2.4 The La Cave Cleveland 1965 bootleg (also issued on the 2 Koala albums "Yellow Bird" and "Get Together"-
the Total La Cave recording comprises 13 tracks (less 6 on other albums not including Echoes Of Heroes)
2.5 The Warner-7 Arts Demos
31 tracks of which
3 (The Lost Children, Echoes of Heroes and Betty Mae's A Good Time Gal) appear on other albums
2.6 The Canadian Talent Library-6 songs less 2 that are on other albums (Turn Turn Turn and Long River)
2.7 A number of unreleased songs including at least 3 recorded by other artists
(Talkin' Silver Cloud Blues, I Can't Make It Anymore, You'll Still Be Needing Me After I'm Gone
2.8 The great and rather neglected single "Spin Spin"
Total of all of the above is:-
223+7+12+2+7+28+4+4=287
2.9 This listing does not include a few very significant unreleased songs on the bootleg of the 1974 Massey Hall concerts
plus we now know there should be 11 out of 18 demos Gord made before his illness on the eagerly awaited Twentieth album
That is all I have time for today
But after further consultation at Wayne's "unreleased" page http://www.lightfoot.ca/unreleas.htm
which I know includes some of the songs on 2.9 above
So after I find more time I'll be back with a further list of other known unreleased recordings (Well known to me anyways)
plus other things like the US and Canadian National Anthems

According to the most recent interview article posted in a seperate thread he has over 250 to nearly 300. If I know recording artists like I think I do he more than likely has nearly double that. Sometimes artists just record for the heck of it,which is why on Songbook he finally issued some unreleased material. I have to say once again though that,"You'll Still Be Needing Me" should have never been left out of any LP. I think it's so good that it can fit in with any decade. It just doesn't sound like a song recorded in the 60s. I'm sure wone day we'll hear it all. Until then,be frugal in listening to his music and it'll seem like he has plenty. Later!
