Cherry Brook Zoo appeals for return of rare Goeldi monkey

SAINT JOHN - It may have been late night monkeyshine gone awry, a family wanting what they thought was a cute pet or even an organized ring of monkey thieves.

Regardless, the Cherry Brook Zoo lost one of its tiniest residents in the early morning hours yesterday. A callimico Goeldi monkey named April, so tiny it could fit in the palm of a child's hand, is now in the hands of thieves and in peril. The highly endangered baby was born at the zoo last year and is part of a worldwide breeding program. There are only 1,000 or so such monkeys alive in the wild and the Cherry Brook Zoo is one of only two in Canada that houses and breeds them.
As zoo director Linda Collrin stood in front of the Goeldi cage yesterday, the three remaining Goeldi monkeys seem subdued, almost as if they were looking for something. Only allowed outside over the last few days, the monkeys would usually be screeching and bouncing from branch to branch in an almost non-stop frenzy. But not today.
"It's OK, babies. We're going to get her back," Collrin said to the remaining three -- mother, father and brother. Collrin believes the thieves were looking for that specific monkey. They walked by another cage that contained a larger species and went right for the tiny Goeldi. The monkey-nappers left a number of the other Goeldi monkeys running around inside the monkey house, but closed the door to the outside so they couldn't escape.
"This was planned," Collrin said. "I think they just grabbed whatever animal they could and, of course, the baby is going to be probably the easiest one to grab," she said, adding the other monkeys were left terrorized.
"We get a lot of phone calls from people that want to own monkeys. They think they'd make a nice pet -- they don't."
Only a few days earlier, a family was in the zoo's office asking where they could get such a monkey.
"Don't let it go because it won't survive," she said to whomever may have the monkey. "Something will eat it, something will kill it."
The monkey also requires special food and can't survive on dog kibble. More important, Goeldi monkeys can carry diseases such as TB and herpes simplex that can very easily be spread to humans.
"They're putting themselves at risk,"; Collrin said, "and they're putting anyone that's around this monkey at risk."
The zoo's director said she'll gladly go pick up the monkey and won't press any charges.
"They made a mistake. Correct the mistake and bring it back to us. It's a baby."
Callimico is Latin for beautiful little monkeys and Goeldi is the name of the Swiss naturalist Emil August Goeldi, who first documented the little black fur balls.
"We're talking about the survival of an entire species of monkey," Collrin said.
Sgt. Pat Bonner of the Saint John Police Force said getting the monkey back to the zoo and giving it the care it needs is critical. Police will even send a car to retrieve it.
Goeldi monkeys make an ear-splitting squeal that can be heard across great distances. The thieves, he said, didn't try to steal the proper animal. "I don't see them trying to steal a tiger," said Bonner.

SAINT JOHN - Jack Hanna, well known for his appearances on TV talk shows trying to educate people about wild animals, says Wednesday's theft of a callimico Goeldi monkey is akin to stealing the rarest of rare paintings.

"It's like stealing a Rembrandt," Hanna said yesterday from California, where he was getting ready to appear on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.
"It's worse than that."
Thieves broke into the monkey house at the Cherry Brook Zoo in the early morning hours Wednesday and stole April, a baby monkey that was born there as part of an endangered species program last year.
"The point is, what are they going to do with it? They can't breed it," said the director emeritus of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio and TV show host.
Hanna said the zoo should take further steps to secure the remaining three monkeys because the thieves could return looking for a breeding partner.
Trying to get the monkey out of Canada, he said, would be an almost impossible task.
"It's like taking a huge bazooka through airport security. I would try any of that stuff before I try and sell a Goeldi monkey. I can't describe how difficult that would be."
With only 1,000 of the monkeys in the wild and captivity, Hanna called it a huge blow considering the female monkey was on the verge of sexual maturity.
"To me, extinction of an animal is more critical than a Rembrandt," Hanna said. "So you can't put a value on this loss.
Linda Collrin, the director of Cherry Brook Zoo, said she spent Wednesday night listening to the thunder and lightning storm wondering if the tiny monkey was safe. She woke up yesterday hoping to find a box on her doorstep with the monkey inside. "People are looking and we need to keep (the issue) out there," she said.
Hanna said he'll help spread the word.
"The zoo world will know about it immediately, because as of right now I'm going to start telling people about it," Hanna said.
"You won't be able to sell it to anybody."

Tip leads police to rare monkey stolen from New Brunswick zoo

By The Canadian Press

April, a baby Callimico monkey, shown here with her mother Bonnie in this August, 2006 file photo, is back home. The rare baby monkey was stolen early Tuesday morning from Cherry Brook Zoo in Saint John. Police found her in a cage on a city street corner after receiving a phone tip Thursday night. SAINT JOHN — A little black monkey named April who was stolen from New Brunswick's Cherry Brook Zoo is safely back home with her family.

Police in Saint John say they found the little critter in a cage on a city street corner after receiving a phone tip Thursday night.

Police are going over the call to see if the voice provides any clues to the theft.

April was stolen early Tuesday morning when someone jumped a fence, kicked in a door, and took her from the enclosure she shared with her mother, father and brother.

April is a rare callimico monkey, also known as a Goeldi's monkey.

The primates, originally from the Amazon region, are known for their close, family ties.

They are tiny creatures and it's estimated nine-month old April weighs only about half a kilogram.

Personally, I think that the thieves were absolutely heartless. Someone needs to put their foot so far up the boogers backside that it would have to be surgically removed.

{lol} That would be far allright

I always said put your foot so far ones backside, that your laces on your sneakers would come out of the persons nostrils and then you tie a bow or a knot whichever .

No but seriously timetraveler folks that do such things have a rock instead of a heart.

That is so true. I don't know what the rest of the world thinks about apes, monkeys, or simians, but I figure that any creature that has the ability to form complex social groups, make basic tools, and has the capacity to feel joy, sorrow, and all the various emotions that man is able to feel, those creatures are deserving of our respect & protection. While God did give man dominion over the Earth and all that there was & is in it, He did NOT, however, give us the right to misuse & abuse what he gave us.
