Default Massey 1999

A week or so ago I found my way to the chatroom. I was welcomed by Erica and was reminded of a "story" I had begun shortly after the 1st Lightfoot Convention in 1999. The central location was the Delta Chelsea but we obviously took in the concerts at Massey.

While she encouraged me to finish the story, too many years have passed for me to remember all the fun things that went on.

I'm going to share what I wrote, which I'll remind you was only the beginning of the story. If those of you who were there would like to add to it please feel free. I know there are some of you here, who were there, so I'll be mighty disappointed if you don't add to the story!

Story - Story - Story - Story - Story - Story - Story - Story - Story - Story - Story - Story

What follows is a somewhat whimsical and embellished view of my second pilgrimage to Toronto. Any reviews of the concerts are MY opinions only and not intended to cause or encourage debate, however comments are welcome. Some names have been changed to protect the innocent.

It is based on a true story.

*************************

What many of us had anticipated for so long has come and gone leaving many sweet memories. Some folks arrived as early as Tuesday, some not until Saturday, others who had made reservations and even purchased tickets, sadly not at all. We asked ourselves what could possibly have kept them from such an event. Surely not family or work commitments......after all........;-)

I flew in Wednesday about 4:30 pm and after an unanticipated and lengthy delay catching the shuttle was on my way to the Delta Chelsea, unofficial headquarters for the 1st annual Lightfoot Convention. But after a couple of 180 and 270 degree loops we were stopping again!! And who should board but Erica (sundreme@aol.com). I was about midway back on the shuttle so she didn't see me as she found a seat in the front of the bus.

We wound and ground our way through the rush hour traffic of 'Big Smoke' stopping frequently once we reached the downtown area, dropping off passengers. When empty enough I made my way to the front of the bus.

"Hey", I said, "I understand there are Gordon Lightfoot fans on this bus"

She looked up a bit startled as I stuck my hand out and said, "Hi Erica, Doug Kirk, Plumbguru2".

She said, "How did you know it was me?"

"Oh I've seen your picture......couldn't have been anyone else"

"And where did you see my picture?"

"Uh....a certain wealthy financier from Palo Alto, with a thing for Zippos send out pics of your visit there so I was able to recognized you".

"Oh, Hi Doug"

"How were you able to recognize me?"

"Well, here I am minding my own business and some stranger walks up, sticks his hand in my face and says hi." It wasn't too tough to figure out......I'm not just another pretty face."

"Gotcha", I respond.

So began my adventure of Nov '99.

Erica and I got to the hotel and as we were standing in line to check in, Laverne, aka Louise aka Vanna, known in real life as Lynn O, sweeps into the lobby, looking like the Belle of the Ball, greeting us both, by embracing us and welcoming us to the great Massey adventure. Upon check-in, Lynn escorted to the "Chelsea Bun" where the rest of the 'entourage' were waiting. The "Tour Director" Julie, aka Shirley, aka Thelma known in real life as Jenney, Andy, Darin, Sue, Val, John, Diane, Susan,.........

With tickets in hand and sporting "Canary Yellow Canoe" shirts we left the hotel about 7:00 PM ready to storm Massey Hall.

It's always a thrill to turn the corner from Younge on to Shutter St and have your eyes riveted to the "Massey Hall" sign glowing red and making the excursion a reality......we're actually here!!

I won't try to detail it too much but there was definitely an air of excitement walking up to the old hall. There were lots of folks standing around, some looking for last minute tickets others trying to sell unusable ones. If you've ever been to downtown Toronto you've seen the 'homeless' looking for help but I've never seen them be been loud or invasive. They were present and as usual unobtrusive.

Being one to hate to disappoint, Doug, I'll try to add my 2 loonies.

Finally bringing the internet into my life in April of 1999, the first thing I did was search "Gordon Lightfoot". I have been a fan since 1970 when IYCRMM got its radio play in the States. Many of you, I am sure, can relate to how difficult it was to find a concert or anything about Gord before the internet. Concert going was a hit or miss event, even with persistant perusal of Sunday newspaper entertainment sections and calling venues for brochures with schedules.

So imagine my surprise when within minutes of hitting "search" I was in a Gordon Lightfoot website...the one belonging to one Ms Magee! And there was a schedule. Oh my! This internet thing was quite the gadget. With my husband looking over my shoulder, I pointed to the November Massey concerts and said "that would be the ultimate for me, seeing Gord at Massey".

My second internet miracle was finding Rik Stevens' Lightfoot website and his chatroom. With much trepidation, (being the quiet country gal that I am) I signed in to it. But it was empty as it was not Friday night at 9 pm. So I spent the better part of the week deciding whether to risk it. Curiousity got the better of me and that Friday at 9 pm I signed in. I was welcomed with open arms and made some lifelong friends (you know who you are). At the time, the Massey convention was being discussed. Dare I hope, dream that I could join them?

Fast forward to November...I am on my way to Toronto! My husband was with me and neither of us are good navigators outside of our comfort zone and among other things...not being able to make a left hand turn in Toronto was making the last leg of the trip almost unbearable. We could see the hotel, but couldn't get to it! So it was a very stressful trip. We finally made it to the garage only to have to drive down, down, down many levels to find a space to park. Did I mention I am claustrophobic? LOL and stressed to the max. The slow agonizing ride up an elevator the size of a phone booth just about did me in.

Now hubby and I are standing in the lobby of the Delta Chelsea. Our first foray out of the USA and we are in one of many lines of people waiting to check in. I am beginning to wonder if this really was a good idea. Until...I hear "Hi Diane" in this throng of strangers in a country where I didn't know a soul. It was Doug. Gord Bless him. Just those two words made all the stress of the past 13 hours fade away and the excitement start to build. It was a Gordsend to see a familiar face. Doug and I had already met in August when our Tour Director Julie aka Jenney, decided to throw a Northeast Lightfoot Gathering in her home in honor of Doug's trip east for business. Another Lighthead leap of faith as Doug was the only person Jenney knew personally. However of the people that were there, there wasn't an axe killer in the bunch...although one of us, Neil, did have a machete-like tool in his truck as he was a landscaper.

After a drop and run stop in our hotel room, hubby and I went to the gathering spot and I met up with Jenney and Susan (whom I had also already met in August) and before long I was in a bear hug and receiving a kiss on the cheek from our Sir John. It was a nice pre-concert gathering, meeting many people who I knew by name and now could put a face to them.

Soon it was time to don the Canary Yellow shirt and leave for the concert. I can echo many others' sentiments of the feeling you get the first time you see that red lettered sign all aglow. Walking in is another thrill. And as always, no matter where, seeing the familiar setup on stage and you know you are in for a great night. Being at Massey is the ultimate for any Gord fan. The history is palpable. And that is before Gord has even stepped on stage!

The concerts were awesome. Each special in its own way. I attended all three nights and wished there were more.

The second afternoon while I was sitting in the lounge with my hubby, two people came up and said "are you dj?" (In the chatroom I was know as dj or dj17). Again I am amazed that Lightheads can pick each other out of a crowd. When I said I was, I was introduced to Rik himself and Virago aka Lori, our motorcycle riding NASA librarian. How did they know it was me? DUH I had on my Canary Yellow Canoe shirt. And they just guessed who in particular from the blonde hair. Too funny.

There was a gathering one day where we played a Lightfoot Trivia game with teams. It was great fun. There was also a bus tour to Orillia, which I did not join so I could spend some "couple" time with my hubby. He likes Gord's music, just not obsessed enough to devote a trip to Toronto to all things Lightfoot 24/7. He was a good sport and gave me plenty of other time to be a Lighthead to the max, so I was happy to give him that one Lightfoot-less afternoon. We walked Younge St and visited the Hockey Hall of Fame, the seaport at the end of Younge St and Eaton Centre. I agree with you Doug, there were homeless people on the street, but they were some of the most quiet, respectful homeless people I have ever seen.

It was a once in a lifetime trip that I was to repeat in 2005 when Gord returned to the Massey stage. That experience almost defies words. Unfortunately I have not been able to plan any return trips, but those two will remain in my heart and mind forever.

To those of you planning to attend this year...have a blast. To those of you on the fence about it...get off and go! To those of you, like me, who will have to live through trip reports...I will be waiting along with you.

Yours in Gord,
Diane

I was a late bloomer, and went in 2005. May I go on a bit about 2005?
I did not meet Doug, but I did meet Diane. I also met many others. I was a bit nervous, but I had been in the chatroom and met some great friends. I just had never seen them. So finally Rik (chatroom Rik), Laurel and I decided that we would go to Toronto. Rik, Laurel and I stay at the Cambridge Suites about a block and a half from Massey. Great room, but we spent our time at the Delta with everyone. First concert, there was Char - big bearhug, and then our Little Billy, what a wonderful meeting that was. To finally meet Laurel and my best buddy from the chatroom. I was very surprised at Bill's accent, I just never thought he would sound like he was from New York! The concert was surreal, then so quickly it was over. Standing outside on the sidewalk with Rik waiting for everyone to come out here comes a guy that knew Rik, Kenyon. He talked with Rik, and then Rik introduced me. Kenyon gives me a big hug - BRINK, he says, then calls JJ over and says IT"S BRINK! I felt right at home and among friends. I will never forget that in all my life, I still smile when I remember it. Then back to the Delta where I met evreybody!!! I felt like I had known these people all my life, that I was at a family reunion - with rellies that I liked! It was over way too fast. I made great friends there, Char, Rik, Laurel, Bill and Frank, JJ, Kenyon, Melissa and Denny, Lori, Diane, Donnie, John and Susan, Bru, Lisa, Jenney, everybody....what a great beginning to a lifelong friendship with these people. Massey gatherings are magical. Of course I had to go back 18 months later and met more fabulous people. Unfortunately, I won't be going this year so I will, like Diane, live through trip reports and wait. Next time......

Okay, so if I'm following the story line correctly, we now have a patron carting a "machete-like-tool" amidst a group of friends-before-they-ever-met. This is definitely a page turner.

I could say lots about the 4 Massey gatherings I have so far been fortunate to attend in 1999,2001,2005,2006 and in only a few weeks
and it starts over again. The chatroom has been mentioned a few times already as has the dificulty/impossibility of finding out aboot concerts pre internet.
I am personally well blessed by the Massey experience as it was through the chatroom and Julie's arranging the first convention
that I met Susan, and thanks to the efforts of Jenney and Diane got to meet Gord and the orchestra for the first time.
Had I not met Susan I very much doubt if I would be here today as it was only 2 months later that I sufferred a stroke that could have of course been fatal.
the visit to Orillia was most memoriable

All who went on that trip
as was the trivia quiz:-

Doug is in the centre wearing the CYC tee shirt, Jenney/Julie is on the right. sat at the table Val on the left, Erica immediately to the right of Doug, one of the other two males is Darin Hogan who had organised the tee shirts
Sorry that picture is a rather blurry still from my video camera
Our unifying Yellow Canary Canoe tee shirts helped a lot

A male modelling the tee shirt
I had to laugh at Ron's mention of the machete. talk and thoughts of axe murderers were rife in the chatroom.
Luckily for me I had told Susan that my favourite novel was "A Town Like Alice" by Nevil Shute. she went out and bought a copy and as she will often state thought that anybody who appreciated such a book could not be a an axe murderer!!!
we woillnmiss Diane and Deby this coming May.
Finally.
I would like to make a plea for some sort of common badge that those "corfiddlers who go to Massey could wear.
I was much struck buy the thought that there were a few attendees at last month's Florida concerts wthat we only knew about
after the event but did not know that they were there. RJ for one
I was quite taken with Grand Dame's Rose's "Gordquest08" patch and if she would/could display the artwork for it we could all
copy and print it. Failing that I have an idea so will try to show it later.

Hello Sir John,

We enjoyed meeting you and your family in Florida. Just to let you know Ken and I made the buttons. Kathy made the patches. I will try to find a picture of my jacket she made and send it to you. Hopefully you will be able to post it since that is still a project I need to master.

I cannot in all due conscience claim the credit for that picture, simply because I am standing at the extreme right end of the group and Susan is in front with her digital camera around her neck. I do not recall who took it (only that it was not Jenney Donnie,Erkie or Darin, Harold, Sue Bloo or Andy, all of whom are in the picture but Doug isn't so maybe it was him??

Nice Post Deb!
It really brings back fond memories of that cool trip! it was great meeting
you for the first time, and my other Friday night chat "wild and crazy" friends and great seeing old friends too!
I recall the concerts were terrrfic that year as well. I especcially remember some of the male groupies bellowing out to Gord (lovingly of course). Bottles of Ghianti followd by double grappa's will do that!! . I was staying in a section of Toronto that was not exactly high society. Frank and I were not allowed in the lobby of our hotel at night until security checked us out! I rmember so many colorfully dressed people out in the street! I recall your saying to Laurel when first we spoke at MASSEY "my goodness...they sound like the Soprano's"! I also recall Charzo giving Frank and I a tour of the shopping mall... We were like three adult mall rats !! Great times. Thanks for stirring the memories Deb!

Perhaps it was a passerby whose arm was twisted who took the picture.

Below is the sign we wanted to stand in front of but were told by those in the know, it had been put in storage somewhere in town.

Perhaps someday I'll post my wife's take on her adventure, 'Tagging Along' with a Lightfoot fanatic and memories of Orilla 1998.

Thanks for posting the pic of that famous sign Doug. I read about this sign I think in the Maynard Collins book, "If You Could Read His Mind," and maybe some other book, ie: Macleans Magazine ?

Bill

You and Frank (the Italian Grandmother) did sound like the Sopranos!! LOL I remember also that you two walked us home - down Yonge Street at 1 in the morning. Frank was just like a Grandmother - sit, sit, getting up from his chair to let us sit. Too funny. Wonderful memories Bill. I have met all my "chatting friends" at Massey, and are now counted among my best friends.
Is that Massey adventure the one that you whistled for Gord on Ghosts of Cape Horn and got the whole theater whistling?
Great times, buddy.

Sir John I respectfully have to disagree with your identification of the males sitting next to Erica at the table. The gent immediately next to Erica is Brian, followed by Harold. It's none other than the Victorious Bitter Green Trivia Team! (I know, because I was sitting on the other side of Erica, conveniently hiding behind Doug.)

I have to say, that trivia contest was a load of fun!

Okay folks, sorry that last message didn't get formatted very well. Every time I tried to preview my post, I got booted off . . . what gives?

If I may, I'd love to recount a few memories from my first trip to Massey Hall, in May of 1998. What an exciting time that was! I was a wide-eyed child of just 17 and absoutely thrilled to be seeing Gord playing his home gig, so to speak. Like so many who have posted here, before the internet became an everyday tool I had little information about when and where Gord would be playing. It also seemed like I was the only Lightfoot fan alive. Most of my friends just referred to him as "that old guy that you like."

The 1998 gathering was before the convention title took hold, and somewhere I still have my pussy-willows and cattails-themed t-shirt. At that time I had met a bunch of folks in the AOL Friday night chatroom -- Doug and Darin and Derek and Erica and Shirley and Jenney and whoever else has slipped my mind at this point in time. I had briefly said hello to Darin at a show he attended in Michigan, but other than that I was excited to meet some other folks who thought as highly of Gord's music as I did (and do).

That trip to Toronto was my high school graduation present from my parents, and I wanted to drink in every bit of experience that I could. Being so young and aware of the potential for danger with a group of strangers in a big city, I reasoned out that if there did happen to be any axe murderers in the group that they likely wouldn't strike in such a public place as Massey Hall or the lobby of a hotel.

As far as I know, no axe murderers have made their presence known. <smile>

Walking down to the venerable old hall for the first time, I was giddy with anticipation. I was going to Massey Hall! I could scarcely believe it. I had seen Gord and the guys numerous times before that, but it is such a special place to see them play that nothing really compares to it.

One of my favorite memories from that gathering was a jam session that took place in the lobby of the Sheraton after one of the shows. A lot of folks were staying there or nearby, but in planning the trip to Toronto my dad wanted to fulfill a life-long dream of staying at the Royal York Hotel. Walking back after the show with the group, the throng started turning in the direction of the Sheraton. My parents, tired out and ready to head back to the hotel, were certainly not interested in going out for more revelry. So there I was, standing on a corner in Toronto, with a decision to make. Do I go back to the hotel with my parents, which would obviously have been a "safer" choice, or do I wander off with these apparently kind folks and enjoy an evening of music?

Well, I chose to go to the Sheraton and to this day I still can't believe my parents let me. The music was fine, the company delightful, and I had so much fun that I have been at every Massey gathering since then. On that trip, I also met Donnie and Michele, and last summer in Austin Donnie and I were reminiscing about how crazy my parents were to let me go off like that.

In the end, I survived and lived to tell about it. In fact, I think it was Doug and his lovely wife who kindly and graciously saw to it that I made it back to my hotel that first night.

Other highlights that stick out in my mind from the Conventions since then . . . the Trivia Contest in 1999, the Char-B-Que in 2001, the Welcome Back shows in 2005 and the wonderful whistle-a-long (or was the whistle-along in 2006????). A surreal and exquisitely delightful memory from November, 2006 was the jam session in the hotel and a multitude of voices and guitars singing and playing "Seven Island Suite". There is nothing quite like hearing a favorite song played and sung by 20 or 30 or 40 people who just "get it".

Over the years I have met some wonderful folks and made some great memories. I have to echo Diane and say if you are trying to consider whether or not to make a "pilgrimage" to Toronto to see Gord at Massey, book now. Do it! It is an experience to relish.

I can't wait until May!

Yes well Anne I guess you should know
Two points aboot the Orillia signboard picture.I do not recall who took it nor where it came from but I was wrong and yes of course that is Doug sitting in a white and yellow jacket. Sue Bloo(mer) now married from colourful Colourado is the lady sitting fifth from the left next to the late Ann ...
I have a nice monaural video of the November 1966 jam session "Seven Island Suite".
it is at:-
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfo...land_Suite.mov
That is an mov format video of under 10MB that should play in the Apple quicktime player (if you have it that is)
If not right click and download it to convert to an mpg to play in Windoze Media Player.Use the freeware SUPER program
It will give a generally good idea of the ambiance of such a jam session,However I rather doubt that that successful experience will be repeated in May as comparatively few seem to be attending this year more's the pity
