Well, officially Madonna did her "best fans" quite an honor, giving them a private concert.
Should we even dare to mention to Gord that we could make that loyal following of Madonna's look silly?
Do we not compare?
Wouldn't it be awesome if he gave a private concert to some of us? That would be way cool.

I would certainly send in my resume for that and endlessly stand in line too. If any of Gord's people, or himself are reading may they think seriously of it.

That is the whole reason I found this web site. I've never seen Gord perform live and it pains me. It's an ache in my very soul.
I would be very interested in helping to pay
for something of this nature if it could be arranged. I spoke to Ann Liebold at EMP and she assured me that he would do no live performances in 2003. This conversation took place in early March. Has anything changed????

Sorry, titan, no. See Char's posting on the Toronto Star article of 4/19. The good news: Gord wants to come out and play again - he thought about retiring for about 2 minutes after he came out of his coma, then decided he's gonna fight to come back. Bad news is he won't be performing until fall 2004 (about 18 months from now.) He still has 2 operations, one in 3 weeks and one in five months to go through, plus therapy for his legs and feet; voice and hearing were also affected. My guess is he won't tour until he's in the best form humanly possible. But he's a scrapper. I think of him as the little engine that could ("I think I can, I think I can...")

Forget the private concert, let the fans come forward, and in force, in this forum, to honor a man who's following would most certainly make Madonna's look silly. There is no comparison between these individual artists' talents, or for that matter, those of us who are their loyal fans.

And thank you Auburn Annie for the update.

Madonna, who? The perpetual PR and Marketing artist?

My, my walls, aren't we a builder here, i never compared Gord to Madonna, merely mentioned that it would be cool if he followed her fan bash. No, I or any other soul on this board consider Gord fans similar to Madonna fans, we are not. Sorry if this topic got your knickers in a bunch.
Auburn, the little engine that could, how cute. Somewhereupinmichigan, that sounds more realistic considering what he hs been through. We need to change his name here to something like....hm-m, Mega man, or something like that, but, not Covergirl, yuck, it majes my head hurt.
And Somewhereupinmichigan, where have you been?
Still, it would be cool to see a private concert for 500 fans by Gord!

I have been part of the silent majority that often reads and but rarely posts. Most of the time, even if I don't agree with what you are all saying I respect your right to say it. However this time I must be honest and say that I don't know where you guys are coming from when you say a "private" concert for his best fans. Isn't any concert that he does a "private" one for his fans? If you are talking about an invitation only concert...how would the promoter decide who are the "best" fans that get to be invited. (BTW, I was a concert that I would guessimate that there was only about 200 hundred people, mainly because the promoter didn't do his job. It was lovely, but really no different than the 23 other of his concerts I have attended, audience speaking anyways. Certainly from a performance point of view, each one is different.)

And Borderstone...Gord does not live in Orillia anymore. Hasn't since he was a young man. Left there almost directly from school to work in Toronto and hasn't been back except to visit family and friends and to honor and be honored by the town.

I don't mean to flame anyone and apologize for not using my real name or registering. I've had trouble with trolls and porn spam entering into my private mailbox and after extensive and expensive cleanup, I don't want to risk it again.

Sierra,
The difference is that a "private" concert is where the tickets are presold or usually not even printed. The promoter is replaced by a cooperative if you will or in some cases by one person with the financial means to pay the performer. The performer gets paid as usual except that there is no "markup" pocketed by the promoter. There is nothing sinister or elitist about it. We have all heard of some act or other being hired to play at some well-to-do person's wedding or bar mitzvah or just plain old party. And in the case of older performers it is often the only way they can get work. That is certainly not the case here but it would be fun if we could all get together and do it, don't you think?

Thank you, BillW, for your explanation, but I guess that I still don't see the attraction for this kind of event. I have been to many "public" concerts where it was pre-arranged with many other discussion board members, not unlike those here, to get together at one without paying the extra cost of a "private" concert (if there is no generous soul that will carry the entire cost)or denying anyone else the joy of seeing Gord live in the process (because they were not invited by that generous soul). Gord's venues are enough of an intimate nature so I've always felt part of a private group that appreciates his genius. Have you not ever gotten into a conversation with the people sitting around you, pre-show or during intermission and found an instant camaraderie or even yet, discover that you've been chatting with them on a discussion board? I feel that to put together a "private -invitation only" concert is a slap in the face to those who for one reason or another would not be chosen to be part of the group. Madonna's private concert was such a big hit, because her normal concerts are in venues where unless you are lucky enough to score a great and $$$ ticket, you could end up needing binoculars to see what color her hair is that day. You are one of thousands at her concerts, not hundreds. And they are so screaming loud, you just can't connect with her. Gord's concerts are so quiet, so intimate, that you can fool yourself that he is singing just for you. And if are lucky enough to end up in a front row seat (which is still an affordable price...unlike the Material Girl) he will often look directly at you and once in a while you will get a nod or a wink from one of the band guys.

If Gord should find his way back to touring again, it will be on such a limited basis I fear, that I personally would hate to take away any chance of someone seeing him perform because of not being included or not being able to pay the exorbitant price of the ticket. If getting together with a select group of friends to attend a concert is your goal my advice would be to enjoy the public concerts he books, but pre-arranged to get the group together, book a block of seats, stay in the same hotel, make a day or two of it. I've read that they've done that for the concerts at Massey Hall and have had a blast. The staff at EMP has been known to say they enjoy seeing us enjoy ourselves.

I guess what I am looking for is a good explanation as to why a private concert is such a "dream come true". Is it because you hope to have the chance to speak to him one-on-one? Well, with even 100 people (and we all know he has more "best fans" than that), that isn't going to be logistically possible. Your chances are better at a public concert, by showing up as soon as the venue doors open and approach his manager, Barry Harvey, as he can often be seen out in the audience prior to the show, and get down on your knees and beg. LOL. Just kidding. But a respectful request is sometimes honored depending on how many "in the business" people they already have going backstage. Failing that, stand outside the stage door (look for the truck and the bus and the sedan rental cars) and wait patiently. He will make time for you then.

Again, I am not trying to flame...just trying to get where you all are coming from because from what I can tell, what you are looking for can be achieve without the stress of trying to book a private concert. This is a theme that comes up alot in this site and I can't understand why anyone would want to privatized Gord even for just one concert...because at this stage of the game...one concert is a big percentage of his tour...if he ever gets back out there and let's pray that he does. It's great news that he has his eye on the road, but there still that ol'reality bug that might bite us all.

I appreciate your indulgence in my curiosity.

Sierra,

I don't think that BillW was "indulging" with with your curiosity. He was just trying to answer your question. Actually, I think you are obessing over this topic. For what reason I haven't a clue. Now we know where you stand with the private concert issue. I know it really meant a lot to me to know how you felt about this. Thanks. I think you are taking it way more seriously than anybody else around here. Sometimes it's nice to casually discuss possibilities amongst other fans. Okay, so it's not for you. Great, we'll scratch your name off the list.lol I guess the thought that keeps running through my mind is "who cares"???

We're just a bunch of fans and are excited over the recent interview. I guess we are "the glass is half full" type of people rather than the more pessimistic camp. It takes all kinds I guess.

By the way, I get zero spam from this site. I have an email account that I only use for this site and I have yet get one piece of junk mail. Now I am sure someone will read this and send me a bunch just to prove me wrong!

Watchman,

I knew I could depend on you for such a response. Thanks for not letting me down.
(And just for the record, I've seen you "obsess" on quite a few topics, but I have never said to you "who cares" and "we'll scratch your name off the list".) I didn't realize that one of the requirements for posting on this discussion board was that I had to keep it casual.

My two reasons for posting was to offer an alternative way to get want some of you want...to enjoy a concert together; and secondly, to be a little bit of the devil's advocate. Sorry, I get paid to do that for a living...it's a hard habit to break on the weekends. I apologize if I have upset anyone.

The extra bonus was to be one of the many to be flamed by you. Now I am truly in an elite group! Thanks! ;O)
