Default Sewell, NJ 10/7/10

Gord's show last night at the TD Bank Arts Centre in Sewell, NJ was a great one. It was about an hour from my home here in DE, so it was very convenient. The venue was literally at a high school which was hard to imagine until I got there. Gord was in great form and very chatty. I thought his voice was stronger in York, PA in June- he seemed to strain more for notes last night. Gord wore the red velvet jacket for the first set and the white shirt/blue vest combo for the second.

John Fowles and I both did the setlist, so John, feel free to add or correct as needed Here it is:

Triangle
Cotton Jenny
14K Gold
Never Too Close
In My Fashion
APPT
Christian Island
Shadows
Beautiful
*Band Intros* (lengthy)
Carefree Highway
Hangdog Hotel Room (mentioned many names)
Ribbon of Darkness
Sundown
The Watchman
Alberta Bound

The Wreck
Sweet Guinevere (shout out to John and Susan)
Don Q
Clouds of Loneliness
Let It Ride
If Children Had Wings (spoke about his children and his first wife)
IYCRMM
Baby Step Back
Restless
EMR
SFAWN

Blackberry Wine - Encore

John Fowles, wife Susan and mother were seated behind us, so we were able to chat a bit before and after the show. It was great seeing all of them again. Curious Moonbeam was there too along with her sister. I guess it was a mini corfid reunion of sorts. We hung out afterward, and Gord autographed my Harmony CD insert. I was nervous as usual, but he was talkative and laid back. Thanks Gord!

Just one minor correction FL.Susan actually wrote the setlist and her listing definitely shows that
Gord sang Restless after IYCRMM then Baby Step Back after Restless.
Well Allright You possibly made a deliberate mistake to try to catch out me and/or Wayne Francis??
If so you have certainly proved that Wayne, who I had suspected uses other sources for most of the setlists he adds to his website does read corfid and is not averse to copying where necessary the setlists we post because as you can see at
http://www.lightfoot.ca/101007.htm
he copied your incorrect version and here is the proof of how it really was

(I believe he was refering to the lead singer of The E Street Band)
whereas Gord's band has a "straw boss" !
Long wondering what a straw boss is I have googled:-
"straw boss
n. Informal
A worker who acts as a boss or crew leader in addition to performing regular duties"
I guess that sums up Rick pretty well
MiKe then received the usual accolade about being able to play in any key Gord throws at him

After Sundays concert we had requested he sing this surprising addition to the rotation list because Susan had really enjoyed hearing the lyrics live and wanted her mother to hear it on either Wednesday or Thursday (he sang it both nights)
We had previously had two "shout outs"
In April 2002 Gord performed Sit Down Young Stranger for us at a concert in Trenton NJ and and
In April 2005 he did Inspiration Lady at one of the Las Vegas Casino concerts. luckily the one that somebody made a fine if incomplete bootleg of (so we have a great souvenir of hearing our names spoken from the stage)

Yes it sure was a detour to hell
I recall passing Rassas Pontiac Buick and noting that due to the demise of Pontiac the letters PONTIAC had been taken off

nearby was a roadlock on Route 520 (our direct path to the Garden State Parkway) curses it is late and we want to get home!!

and to keep us away from nightime road works there was the first of a large number of orange detour signs we followed them for miles and miles and miles noting that not one mentioned the detour's destination or provided any mileage info, in due course you might say we saw the Parkway overpass ahead and carefully avoided the Parkway South pointer then followed not one but two Parkway North signs full of hope that our ordeal was almost over a hope which was shatterred when within about half a mile and after a jughandle turn we found ourselves lookng at a now familiar road block and could see again see where the Pontiac lettering had been removed!! plus of course the first detour sign we had seen all of 20 minutes previously but no other indication of the correct direction to proceed in
At this point Susan nearly lost her presence of mind and was mulling over which direction to try next when the cop on duty at the roadblock abandoned his post and strolled over to issue a move it on order because you are causing a roadblock! She failed go tell him that his stoopid roadblock was the cause! Anyroad somehow we did find our way to the Parkway and home

It is so great that you guys take set lists. I'm so awstruck and I don't want to miss a thing, that I never get around to it! This is absolutely the best concert I've seen since 2002. I agree with formerlylavender that Gord's voice was not as strong as the York concert but his light mood and chat were great. He seemed to really be enjoying himself and was very relaxed and willing to talk at the meet & greet, I only wish I had something to say! My sister and I had a great time, giggling like and couple of school girls - Gord's manager even took a couple of pictures for us. Unfortunately, I'm not talented enough to post them. John, Susan and Mother, it was so nice to meet you after seeing your posts for so long! I'm glad you finally got home safe and sound. It was also very nice connecting again with formerlylavender and husband. What a great concert - one I'll never forget - it'll be hard to top this one!

At Concord I did write the entire setlist in the gloom by catching those moments when the stage lights were sending enough light my way. Of course it helped to that we were in the front row. even so I cocked up in the first set as there was a largish gap and a squiggle between where I had written 10 beautiful an an unnumbered Watchman and I guesed that I had omitted 11 In My Fashion but that was probably incorrect and was ignored by Wayne Francis if he used my posting for his website setlist
Sometimes I use a rhyming memory aid system (one bun two shoe etc)
but when doing several concerts close together it is hard to set up and retain unique visualisations for more than two concerts especially as I have to start at one bun again after the intermission
see:-
http://www.andras-nagy.com/AcceleratedLearning/04.htm
scroll down to the section on
Peg words
This memory system is interesting for its insight into the role of visual association.
The idea allows you to remember a list of unrelated items in correct sequence. The first step is to create the `pegs'. These have to be committed to memory by sub vocalising. Because the objects rhyme with the numbers they are easy to memorise.
one = bun
two = shoe
three = tree
four = door
five = hive
six = sticks
seven = heaven
eight = plate
nine = wine
ten = hen
Having memorised the peg words, the next step is to relate visually the items-to-be-remembered with the correct peg word.
Supposing the second item on your list is a car. The instruction is to form a strong visual image of the car and the shoe and get that image to interact as strongly as possible. For instance, a Rolls Royce car might be parked right on top of a giant canvas shoe.
I picked up that method from a
BBC television programme and book by Tony Buzan (Bewzan)
<A href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Buz" target=_blank>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Buzan
At Red Bank and Sewell Susan took over: at the former I was in the aisle seat with a light in the left hand armrest so Susan could lean over me and check what she had written.At Sewell we were in the second row so again we had good lighting from the stage lights;the scan of her notes that I posted previously showed why I am so certain she got the ICFMM>Restless>Baby Step Back sequence correct

Alright for you! I nearly blew a gasket laughing at that one! No one would ever accuse me of using colorful language. (and get away with it)

Although I'm now enrolled in the Sir John Fowles Academy Of Colorful British Slang. Blame him...

Hey John, I just checked my setlist, and I have IYCRMM, Restless, BSB in that order. I guess I typed it out of order when I was posting.

I think I will resort to writing one song per page in my little notepad..seems easier than trying to have a super memory.

We all make mistakes as the hedgehog said as he got off the scrubbing brush!
You had better apologise to Wayne and politely suggest that he edits his setlist at:-

His current email address is apparently rook43@lightfoot.ca

Thanks for the setlist. My husband thought the sound system was really good, better than the Keswick (as were the seats) and Gord also mentioned how much he liked the sound system. Husband also thought he may have sung a few less songs than usual, we thought he used to do at least 2 encore songs. But it was a wonderful show as always. I think he sounded better & stronger after the intermission - where you've got 20 minutes and you better do what'cha gotta do in that time : ).

One thing I wanted to add that I thought was pretty funny, when he mentioned that he was supposed to have been on Letterman but was bumped. He said he wanted to watch to see who was so important to bump him (or words to that affect).

Also, when he asked the name of the venue in Pittman that he played & people mentioned Broadway Theater, he said "ah, we were on Broadway". I love his sense of humor even if I don't hear everything he says or understand it all. I gotta laugh when he cracks himself up.

Unfortunately we didn't stay after this time. Was he seated at a table and were there guards around keeping people at bay like a couple of years ago at the Keswick? Or was it more like it used to be at the Keswick where he was a little more accessible?

I just remembered one of the jokes he told, it actually took me a few minutes to get it. As told by his barber, "How long is the hair (hare) on a rabbit's back? About 3 seconds."

I think there was a second joke but it eludes me right now.

I don't believe Sir John managed a picture of Rassas (formerly Pontiac) Buick. I knew one of those folks back in college. The daughter of the head honcho at the time.

Hi all, I've been away tending to my father so i've been out of touch. Lots of threads about Gord's NJ area concerts and a lot to catch up on. Thought I would tack this on to this thread but it touches on others.
Here's how Gord's 10/6 Red Bank show went for me. Me and Mrs. Wheels got into town early as some suggested and choked down some pancakes at the nearby Broadway Diner all the while keeping our eye out for Gord or Rick, the easiest to recognize. No success but I got a kick out of seeing the big truck with the Ontario license plates in the parking lot.
It was nice to run into the John Fowles clan. We had a few nice chats during the break and at the concert's end. I was hoping to ride on John's coatails to meet Gord right after but I guess his coatails weren't quite that long. I couldn't get the Mrs. to wait another hour so I gave John one of my CDs to hand to Gord. John accomplished the mission! Still waiting for John's feedback on Gord's reaction to getting it. (cmon, John. I can take rejection!)
Oh yeah, the concert. The Count Basie Theater is a great place to see and hear music. The acoustics and light show (by whoever does it)
were top notch. Gord's playing is still stellar. The band is extremely tight and sensitive to the nouances of each song and the mix was perfect.
Have to agree with gretschviking that Gord could do without the capoing to higher keys. Maybe he just doesn't like to change things.
His show is a well oiled machine. I was surprised to see his setup exactly the same as I saw that morning watching the Live At Reno DVD.
My guess is the thing really dragging down his voice is the fact that he's playing so many shows nearly back to back at his age. I know in my case, at age 59, I can hardly do 2 good long sets unless I've had 2 days rest from the previous gig. I agree with jj in that people come to see him because they love him. His songs grab the heartstrings and pull you in with pure honesty. A guy who is as humble and gracious as he is
is easy to love. You just have to root for him seeing that he's been so "criminally overlooked" (FAME review by Mark S. Tucker) compared to other great singer songwriters like Joni, Dylan, James Taylor etc.
As for "Left Foot Lightfoot" I've sent it out to 270 radio stations and, so far, it has been played by 43 that I know of. Although nobody's really buying it, (not even corfidians) I'm getting a lot of "way to go" encouragement and I'm putting together a nice scapbook of radio playlists sometimes with my versions next to a Gord original!
Life is good! Go Yankees! Cheers,
Tom
PS I'm playing Monday 10/18 again at Rockin Joe's Coffeehouse at 20 Prospect St, Westfield, NJ 7:30 pm with some vocal & violin help from Beth Long. Gord tunes included, of course. Good desserts and no cover.

I have to agree about the Count Basie theatre..I was a Lightfoot concert back in 2004 I believe, and saw how lovely it was.
I also think you are right about the back to back to back shows..add in travel and I just am exhausted thinking about it. How they do it is beyond me.
I've noticed in the reviews in the last week or so that there's been no mention of the sound being too low...that's a good thing!
Glad you enjoyed your evening, thanks for reporting in...

My Google image search took quite a long time despite which I did not find a photo of that Red Bank dealership showing both PONTIAC and BUICK. Now there is only the dirty outline of the letters of the dropped car brand
but here is another "strange" or is it merry dealer facing the very same problem!!!
