Newsgroup and Corfid highlights week 14-19 February 2004
Both boards had threads/topics regarding our hopes and prayers for Gord's scheduled operation this past Tuesday and we all now anxiously await news that it was successful
Both boards also took a dim view of the decision by the Junos committee that the Beautiful tribute album did not fit into any existing awards category
Otherwise the Newsgroup:-

http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com
was relatively quiet
this silence was broken on Tuesday by Roger speculating on what a duet of Gord and Willie Nelson might comprise song-wise
This caused apoplexy for Ed Mullen who introduced the notion of those two along with Bob Dylan
The corfid discussion forum:-

http://www.corfid.shorturl.com
continued to be lively
Jim Nasium from somewhere in England was astounded by the ignorance of a Canadian lady on a BBC quiz programme who was unable to name 5 famous Canadians
Sundry Americans then showed how knowledgeable they were and this sparked off a new topic "Pop Quiz" which sounds promising
I myself added to an earlier thread on Gord's affinity with cats and/or dogs when I spotted on ebay:-

http://www.ebaylightfoot.shorturl.com
that a punter in Japan was auctioning a Japanese single of Sundown with a rare picture sleeve with a fine shot of Gord with a dog.For as long as this auction is current you can see this pic at:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002021.html
On the subject of Pets
I then posted my two favourite kitten pics a few days ago as a new "Small Talk" forum topic at:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000285.html
last night I was able to lead Kimberley (ex-mytoyota) through the procedure to display on corfid any picture that is already on a web site, a most useful feature that in my mind sets corfid apart from the Newsgroup where Google studiously ignores any binary content (although if you follow the NG via your browser's Newsreader then attachments of jpegs etc will show up)
The other feature of corfid I really like is that you can see your posting immediately and if you post as a registerd member you can if necessary then edit it or even delete it(due to my penchant for typos this is invaluable!!!)
Bill (W)allace started what could be an interesting thread on "Playing PAL DVDs in the USA" a subject of which know a bit and will contribute to in due course:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000286.html
two mentions of Gord by late night chat show host Conan O'Brien were quoted on this topic:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002027.html
Which is a neat cue for today's chat room advert
following last week's successful chat during which 11 turned up we will be open as usual this evening at 9 PM EST at:-

http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
It will be interesting to see if Gaby makes it again and whether she has bitten the bullet and installed mIRC at last details at :-
http://www.mirc.shorturl.com

Chat Newsgroup and Corfid highlights week 20th to 26th February 2004
The biggest news appeared immediately I posted my highlights last week when Jenney revealed that she had heard from Toronto that Gord's operation apparently was successful and that he was out of the ICU
Among the more interesting new topics on corfid at:-
http://www.corfid.shorturl.com

was the revelation by a new poster who had been posting as "trudiewannabe" that her real name is Shazia. it transpired that the Sting to her tale is that she rather fancied herself as Mrs Gordon Sumner!!
I havejust checked my facts on this via Google where I also learned that an anagram of Sting's real name is "grunted minor songs" which is mightily unfair!!

other Corfid topics included:-
The Gordon Lightfoot Project
an appeal from Jeffrey Parker for ideas on three things that represent GL for a school history project produced some good
ideas although Jeffrey seemed to have sussed out the salient points already:-
Guitar-the Fitz and CRT:-
one of the replies mentioned that I had found a very nice painting of the Fitz at sunset it is at:- http://pet-portraits.net/edmund_fitz...ight_print.jpg

Dunkin Douglas (DMD3)
has this very day started what could be a long-running and interesting
"Topic: What is a Lighthead to you?"
this youthful Lighthead was also worried about the whereabouts of a hitherto prolific UK poster rejoicing in the name Major Sir Jerry Pudding who replied that some unimaginative pillock had registered that name so he was unable to use it. Unfortunately sir Gerald then used another unregistered name Major Surgery Pending no longer quite so apt now Gord has had his hopefully final surgery Oh well
Another new corfid poster wanted to know an explanation of the great song " Race Among The Ruins" and was promptly told that a young and then eligable Derek Kidd had submitted a lengthy analysis on the Newsgroup way back in 1997. which prompts me to emphasize to all posters old and new that amongst the Newsgroup's almost 30,000 threads you can find discussion on just about every GL song especially if it is called "Cabaret" and possibly features sundry Zippo lighter noises!!
see:- http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&th=2ee5502a529dee46&rnum=1]h ttp://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&th=2ee5502a529dee46&rnum=1]http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&th=2ee5502a529dee46&rnum=1
Derek's starting post is a classic so make sure that you read it all. That reminds me of another very nice explanation of another favo(u)rite of mine
That Same Old Obsession at:- http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&selm=FWBz3. 1522%242h5.4784%40news.chello.at
this was posted by someone who called himself then:-
Corfid (f-bodenseher@gmx.net)
That's right no less than our good friend and benefactor of the corfid site and Discussion Forum
Florian. He shortly thereafter got stuck into his own website and announced it to an unsuspecting Lightheadworld in September 1999 at:- <A HREF="http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&th=a71e8494c3e0f895&rnum=7" TARGET=_blank>http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...3e0f895&rnum=7[/ URL]

Meanwhile on the Newsgroup (alt.music.lightfoot)
Handily accesible from this special link:- &lt;A HREF="http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com]" TARGET=_blank&gt;http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com]</A>
Ed Mullen found himself bereft of Kleenex
And a Canadian poster pointed out that the Linus Entertainment site had put up some new Gord items preparatory to their release of Harmony which bodes well for their probable publicity plans for the album and the man

I will add a link to one of the pictures they used and for anyone reading this on corfid the picture sould in fact have appeared below this link but unfortunarely Linius have cut the pic up into 4 segments so click on this link:-

Highlights week 28 February to March 11th 2004
NEWSGROUP
The linus web site apparently now has an extract from the liner notes for Harmony
see the thread subject "harmony fever" at http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com
this followed another new harmony-related thread "Welcome to Orillia........" started by an ex-pat son of Orillia now in Sweden
and some initial reviews in another suitably titled thread "harmony preview"
which included a posting by Doug Kirk to his own web site's inclusion of the harmony album artwork
CORFID
Over at the corfid discussion Forum two stalwarts there continued to provide some stirring topics
"Borderstone" (Walter Lamont) wanted to know how anxious we were regarding the release of Harmony and afterwards he through
a third party (thank you brink) sent me a fine picture of himself which is now on display at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002059.html
I intend to incorporate a rogue's gallery on my Webring page when I get around to rewriting it
(and completing the reorganisation of the webring that I have been trying to get back to for yonks)
and have therefore in that topic asked for fans to send me a recent picture.
Our young Georgian Dunkin' Douglas (DMD3) started a nice topic asking readers
"Give me a list of all the GL songs you have heard on the radio" which will get us old-timers scratching our heads!!
talking of pictures as I was
"Bruna the Beautiful Blonde Brit" was recently over here and in her travels discovered literally almost by accident the
township of Lightfoot in Virginia. She is prettily pictured at Lightfoot at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002074.html
and yet another swooning female from the UK Gaby
had the temerity to ask:-
"So, which song do you know Gordon Lightfoot wrote for you?" http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002078.html
--------------------------------------------------
And now the sorry tale of the chat room or rather the lack of it:-
Well I have no real idea why the usual chat room failed the last two weeks but the link no longer works via the IRC server
cjb.net that Rik originally set his chat room up with, nor was it possible to get the simpler non-IRC access via the browser.
I consulted mIRC help and the advice seems to be to try another IRC sercver of which there are a large and varying number
listed in a drop down menu above the mIRC's "connect to IRC Server" button.but one I successfully tried two weeks ago DLnet.net
is not listed on the old mIRC version that Susan is using.
Eventually last week after I had made contact with Cathy by IMing her we roped in her son Matt who obviously knows a thing or
two about IRC and he set up gordonlightfootchat to open using EFnet as the IRC server.Indeed 4 of us were able to meet in what
seemed to be the identical layout that we are used to using mIRC.
BUT he does not think it is possible to get in via one's browser which rather negates that solution for now as several
chatters who do not want to get involved with installing the superior mIRC and therefore will wish to continue using the
browser method. So that way is out. Now Rik ran into the problem of reluctance to go 100% with mIRC some years ago and was
trying to set up an alternative using the free chat facilities offerred by bravenet. (free but pop-up advert prone)
So there is a link already on his web site to his bravenet room (see below)
I have now been able to initiate my own bravenet room (see below also)
But as yet I have not been able to discover if a bravenet room can be accessed via mIRC.
I will be contacting Matt shortly to see if he knows how to do that
So for the moment i.e. this evening we will meet in Rik's existing room at:-
http://pub41.bravenet.com/chat/show.php/3487845653 at 9pm EST
if you wish to do a quick check on my proposed new room as it is go to:-
http://pub33.bravenet.com/chat/show.php/2750193584
Neither room as far as I can tell is actually located in a "pub"
OK that's it for another week

I am most gratified by a few comments on the Newsgroup that my efforts to devise a small digest of the past week's highlights
are being appreciated. so here I go again
Highlights week March 12th to 18th 2004
CORFID
young newbie Shazia
started what is becoming an interesting topic at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002097.html
by asking after hearing the Auctioneer
"do some Lightfoot songs make you LAUGH (instead of getting watery-eyed, for example)?"
She had earlier set female hearts flutterring by archly asking at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002098.html
"The question is: in his prime (whatever that was), how did you feel about Gordon's looks, aside from his music? The choices
are below"
This has certainly caused some confusion for male corfidants!!!
Shazia also been seeking advice (as a new collector of Gord albums) on what to buy next. I always recommend getting the United
Artists five original albums. As this is a recurrent topic on corfid I did some extensive research on the various ways to
obtain those albums and produced an illustrated guide at:= http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002090.html
"knightmoves" (niveknavillus)
provocably asked for reaction to his motion that
"GL and Folk fading into history forgotten???" at:- http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002099.html
An excited Gaby reported on a positive response she had received from Linus to her enquiry "about the worldwide release of
Harmony and pre-ordering." which revealed their plans to
"let fans pre-order by only two weeks in advance. It will be on www.mymusic.com" http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002100.html
that one item alone IMHO made reading corfid last week most worthwhile!!
Meanwhile for lighter relief on the small talk forum
A topic on what Canadians think of the corfid site led to a search for a few missing regulars in particular Georgian DMD3
(Dunkin Douglas) http://www.corfid.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000299.html
Florian showed by adding a feature on Harmony welcome evidence that he was still involved with his creation
and now a peek at the NEWSGROUP
The week's most intriguing incident was undoubtedly an upset that occurred in a thread:- http://groups.google.com/groups?dq=&...roup%3Dalt.mus ic.lightfoot
that was basically discussing the attempts by itunes to eliminate piracy of the harmony preview
This led to the reapearance as a poster by one-time LighTfoot website pioneer Matthew Fifer. Unfortunately he chose to comment
curmudgeonally on a typical rant by frequent poster Ed Mullen and was in turn accused by Newsgroupers who had were obviously
unaware of Matthew's valuable past contribution to the wealth of internet Lightfoot resources of being troll who threw "a moodie" it also revealed that at the time of posting one could select ""X-No-Archive" header instruction" and Google then would not display your posting as was the case with two of Ed's postings. Not at all helpful in trying to follow the thread.
I thought this a good opportunity to air at:-
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...ing.google.com
a few of my pet peeves mainly bad design exmples but I learned that
"In America, the person calling does not pay extra to reach a mobile.
The extra cost (if any) is borne by the mobile phone receiving the call."
This as with the fact that in America you switch a light switch on upwards is the exact opposite of what I was used to in
England. Regarding cell/mobile phone charges my wife says this depends on the particular plan you are on.
On the other hand a true troll trying not too hard to be invisible suggested that Gord's surgery might have had a
"dysfunction" (sic-very sick) side effect. this unneccessary posting drew the correct "ignore" response
And so to the unsatisfactory situation with the chat room
Rik's chat room is still not accessible either through the browser link or mIRC at cjb.net although as reported last week
it can be entered via mIRC using the alternative IRC server EF.net
last week I said we would try the alternative Bravenet room that Rik currently has a link to on his site
and I joined Bill Hall and Gary Sprang there for a while,
But no matter what we tried we were unable to get access from Susan's computer (on a different ISP and phone line)
trying with Internet Explorer the Java applet refused to load and switching to Netscape produced the same really stupid
"upgrade required to your Windows Virtual Machine" advice that plagued us when we tried to use the alternative Yahoo Group
chat room a while back.
I later upgraded her I.E. to version 6 but still the applet refuses to open.I got side tracked this week so failed to contact
Cathy's son who knows about mIRC to see if he could find a way to set up mIRC to access the bravenet room (searches of both
bravenet and mIRC help were unhelpful and a google search gave no useful results. So where does that leave us??
Bravenet is clearly not acessible by everybody (I suspect others had the same problem as Susan last Friday). Ideally we could use Rik's original room or a replacement and access via mIRC but despite strenuous cajoling by Rik in 1999/2000 and me in my adverts for well over year too few potential chatters seem prepared to take the small amount of trouble to acquire then set up mIRC. So for tonight I propose that anyone interested meet in the bravenet room at 9pm EST at:- http://pub41.bravenet.com/chat/show.php/3487845653
If only a few turn up I will get round to contacting Cathy's son. Failing a workable answer there I will amend my mIRC
instruction page to add how to change from the existing cjb.net to EF.net and then plan on using that next week.
if anybody reading this has any comments or better ideas please say so either here or to me by e-mail to

John,

I promise faithfully that I will try to get into the chat room tonight. I’ll have a nap this evening and set my alarm clock for some god-awful time over here.

I’ve already done a test run and it was easy.

So, you lot on EST have absolutely no excuse not to turn up occasionally

There are often more Ozzies, Brits and Canadians chatting than Americans!

Thanks for your comment about the email from Linus. I didn’t think to post it on the Newsgroup. (Doh!) I only lurk there. I very rarely post.

John,

with regard to the fraccas at the NG, I am well aware of who Matthew Fifer is and his invaluable contribution to the Lightfoot community. I do, however, still consider his 'moodie' was out of order and most offensive to Ed.

That said, I shall now go away.

And I feel the same way, Bru. For someone who has not posted on the newsgroup for several years, he sure came cruising back in there like he owned it.
Unfortunately, when he left the group with no explanation, he passed the torch on to the next group of people, and Ed is definitely one of the current residents.
I notice he's not paid us another visit since we stood up for Ed.

I noticed it too. His name calling was very ill mannered to say the least - I hope Ed comes back - I will have to get forceful with him if he doesn't!
