there was another successful chat session last Friday
with a total attendance of I think it was about 10 mostly "the regulars" and including Catmanron fresh from his fire-lighting exercises in Victoria (down under). We will always welcome more especially any curious "newbies" and encourage them to participate in an unfamiliar setting.
Tonight as usual there will be a session commencing at 9pm EST
the direct link is http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
but it is more reliable and quicker if you install the mIRC client
full details on my web ite at http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
I am hoping that tonight we will see "brink" as per her e-mail to me many
thanks. I will also post this on the Corfid discussion forum at
http://www.corfid.shorturl.com
the corresponding short snappy link for this newsgroup (alt.music.lightfoot)
is http://www,newsgroup.shorturl.com
Tonight I would like to propose a subject/topic for discussion "How does Gord and the band get so close to the recorded sound in their concert appearances".(I have been listening to another concert recording and the match to the original album recording is quite simply brilliant.I was especially enjoying concentrating on Rick's Bass
Cheers
John Fowles
Finally my Lightfoot "Webring"
ringmaster's site is available for you to use at http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot
please sign the guest book there so I have an idea who is using it and can try to asscertain whether it is still useful as I plan a major revamp soon

Umm, John that should be Fire Fighting, not lighting, people are very sensitive about that sort of action around these parts... We have now lost over a million acres of forest and pasture this year, and the worst part of the season is yet to come.

Yes I will certainly be there, and next weekend as well.

keep smiling... Ron.

And all of a sudden it is Friday again
Last Friday we were a happy crowd of 8 including fire-fighter Ron from Melbourne.
I am very sorry that a certain person tried
to trivialise our chats in this forum. I will say that I do know that several readers from here have ventured into the room and some have even been known to come back for more!!! So there stick that in your pipe any "caretakers" here and smoke it. It is deliberately meant to be a light-hearted session and any attendee is welcome to bring up any GL related topic at any time. Indeed for tonight my suggested topic is "do we need to set a topic each week and could we set up a rota of duty topic-setter for the following week. also another rota for who will post a reminder here", because like another poster here (from the wilds of a New found land) I am getting old enough to catch the dreaded CRAFT disease:-
Can't Remenmber a F****** Thing and am prone to forget to post.
Finally if anyone else is offended by the idea of our chat-room and these reminders then in future just simply ignore this subject altogether.
Time as usual 9pm EST or 2 am Brit time sometime next century in Ozland.
Please see earlier posts above for details of how to get in and get/configure mIRC
Cheers John Fowles(Please note that at least I am not ashamed of my name!!)

On this side of the pond (at least in my neighborhood) it's known as CRS, Can't Remember Sh*t, and I've been known to suffer a, um, lapse or two myself. Hope to drop by tonight.

We had a very busy session last Friday with a total of 12 attendeees making it somwewhat hard to keep up with all the conversations and topics all the time
Two were recent recruits from the Corfid Discussion Board and we hope the experience was sufficiently rewarding for them to return maybe (tonight at 9 pm EST slightly later in the wilds of a New Found Land to the East) Erica has intimated to me that she might soon be able to produce a compelling essay/guide on why all participants should be using mIRC are you listening Rik?? So I suggest that the topic tonight could be how to use mIRC in Rik's chat room
short link http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
Lightfoot "webring" at http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot

Friday's Chat room
Last week there were a total of 8 attendees
It is Friday again so tonight why not drop in to Rik's chat room at 9.30 pm EST
the "direct" hyperlink to the basic "Java" room is http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
But it really is time that every chatter was using mIRC
especially now that at last Erica has contributed a brilliant essay on the benefits of so doing
there is a fully illustrated downloading and configuring instructions page on my site at http://mirc.shorturl.com
from the page that opens
scroll to the bottom and click on
"why it is better to use mIRC"
then read the summary on the page headed
"Useful features of mIRC"
then click on the link to "Erica's essay on mIRC benefits"
or go straight to her essay at http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/c...smircessay.htm
Oops I almost forgot to suggest a topic;
having recently found by using Kazaa and WinMx a pile of cover versions including
33rd of August by Joan Baez and a peculiar and suspicious file named
Gordon Lightfoot (with Harry Chapin) - Flowers Are Red.mpg I would like to suggest as a topic the other versions of Gord's songs (I now have 27 versions of Early Morning Rain! including The Grateful Dead's)

last friday there were a total of 9 chatters, including a very welcome revisit by "Tilt" and one newbie from the west of Toronto Doug using the nickname of "khan". It seems he found his way in by using the /list command in his IRC program I do not know if he was using the recomended mIRC or some other IRC Client. We were able to give him an introduction to the wonderful world of Gordon Lighfoot On-line and we all hope to see him again soon. I was particularly pleased that he not only visited my webring ringmasters page at http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot
but also took the trouble to sign my visitor's book. hint hint. Anyway a whole week has since gone by so tonight there will be another session at
9pm EST in Rik's Chat Room accessed either direct through your browser using the Java Applet at http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
or as I will again stress preferably via an IRC client such as mIRC. There are fully illustrated instructions for getting, installing and setting up this program at http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
To try to convince anyone not yet toeing the party line on this subject there is a slightly revised adaptation of Erica's well thought out essay on the following page http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/c...smircessay.htm
Finally everyone very carefully avoided directly discussing the topic of "covers" that I suggested last week.I don't have any other bright ideas for tonight's topic but will suggest that we discuss whether or not we actually need set a topic and if so who is going to take responsibility for thinking one up each week. Tonight I expect the "catman" (Ron) from Melbourne will be in attendance albeit bare backed as no doubt he lost his shirt last week at the races??

Friday's Chat Room at 9 pm EST
---------------------------------------------Last week there were ten of us a'chatting including the welcome return of "bud-the-spud" aka "akarius" from the suburbs of Ottawa,
Page from the deep South and Ed Mullen
I know I keep banging on about the benefits of accessing the chat room via mIRC
Quite by chance I discovered an old Newsgroup thread concerning Rik's Room and mIRC at: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...ews.iquest.net
Scroll down to find a set of links including one to "tricks" another to a tutorial and this intersting twist on the theme
entitled "who wants to be a mircionaire" at http://leonardo.spidernet.net/Copern...ire/index.html
there are more mIRC references on the Newsgroup. So go to http://www.newsgroup.shorturl.com and search alt.music.lightfoot for mirc
My illustrated instruction page can be found on my site at http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
and Erica's masterly essay on the benefits of using mirc is at http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/c...smircessay.htm
You migght like to know that Yes last Friday we did debate my suggested topic "Do we need a topic?" the general consensus was no it is fine and fun to discuss whatever topics naturally come up. Having said that of course if anyone wishes to come and chat and has a topic to suggest then please feel free to post here accordingly preferably on say the Thursday to give us all a chance to bone up on the subject!!
I hope tonight/tomorrow morning that we may gain an insight to the current Australian mini-convention possibly including known delegates Derek Kidd Peter Treloar and (catman)Ron Chidgey all of wehom are now in Melbourne as is "Joveski" who posts frequently on the Corfid Discussion Forum
at http://www.corfid.shorturl.com
I have been doing some work on my revisions to the Lightfoot Webring
but meanwhile for a list of some of the major Lightfoot Internet sites take a look at http://q.webring.com/hub?ring=gordonlightfootw
or drop in on my ringmasters page at http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot

I am very sorry that last week being rather traumatic due to a family bereavement I was unable to post my weekly chat reminder or report on the previous week's session and both Susan and I were unable to drop in. But I trust a number gathered as usual from 9 pm EST. the previous week we were down to an attendance of only 6 so I hope a few more turn up this evening
direct link via your browser is:- http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com
but an enhanced visit may be enjoyed if you access via mIRC
fully illustrated instructions are at:- http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
And visit my Lightfoot webring "ringmasters " page

OK it's Friday yet again. I did not note how many came into the chat room last Friday
But I do know that regular Kim (mytoyota)
wishes to present her apologies for not being able to attend tonight at 9 p.m. EST
as she will be on her way to somewhere warmer. So the room is not likely to be crowded and we would all welcome anyone who has not tried it before. use the links in my earlier postings on this topic/thread

My My it's Friday again already so here is the usual reminder about tonight's chat session in Rik's Chat Room at 9 p.m. EST this evening and sometime Saturday morning for you ex-convicts down under:- http://www.rikschatroom.shorturl.com for those still using accessing via their browser
But it is much better to download install then configure mIRC see my fully illustrated details and instructions
at http://www.mirc.shorturl.com
Last week we had a nice attendance of ten including "tilt" and a welcome newcomer "steve" from I think said he was from Plano Texas
tonight we should be blessed again by the presence of Toyota driving Kim who should be reporting on her warm reception in California last week. Which reminds me in New Jersey we had a 7 inch snowfall last Monday
Finally try my webring "ringmaster's" page at:- http://johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot to hear a great spoof record commercial

Two weeks ago it was Good Friday and we were unable to attend the chat session then Last Friday we were busy being entertained at the live Face-to-Face chat at The Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs NY. But life has to return to normal and this evening at 9pm EST both Susan and I should be back a'chatting so come on in everbody and if Ed or Cathy turns up you can get first hand extended accounts of the jollifications. Use the links as before in this thread
