Yeah Steve, you need to re-think the idea of just lurking. I would much rather see you keep posting and like Char I get to wear out the pages on my dictionary too, makes this old brain think. Besides this is good therapy for you, makes you work on getting better while having a good time. Stick around!

Oh, come on, Steve. You took a big leap when you decided your health had improved enough to allow you to post again. I find your recovery to be quite amazing, and interesting. Don't take it away now!
I little hint.... some people, me included at times, just have a hard time getting through long messages. So, type yours up. Then edit it. Delete what absolutely doesn't need to be said... redundant sentences, parts where you got sidetracked and went off in a different direction. Remember that other people will be reading your posts. Put yourself in their shoes. Ask yourself, "Did I need to include this line... this info?" Eventually, writing will become automatic, and you will be able to stop editing.
But don't stop writing. What you need more than anything is practice. If people have a problem with your posts, they can easily skip them. And if they take the time to read them and type up nasty replies, don't give them the satisfaction of answering. Ignore them.

Steve, I've not replied to your posts in the past because I had nothing that I was able to contribute to the discussion, but I have enjoyed reading everything you have written and unlike some, evidently, have managed to get through it with no problems at all!

I'll add my support to the others above who encourage you to continue posting. Those who don't find it interesting or have a problem with your formatting can easily skip the posts and hopefully keep their snide remarks to themselves. But if the temptation to be unkind is just too much for them to contain, ignore it and realize that most of us find what you have to say fascinating in whatever format you're able to write it.

Cathy, thanks for the encouragement again; and all the others above speaking so kindly. You may have noticed Cathy that I have taken your
suggestions to heart and practice has paid off.
I re-read my postings from the last month and am morbidly embarrassed at the overly indulgent ramblings I have taken down miscellaneous lane. My childhood; my wife and daughter, my work and field, even my parents' work !
All in non-sequiter format and in many cases not in the least bit pertinent to the subject at hand I am replying to or following.
I appreciate you all being patient while I have been re-formatting my skills in writing, thinking, trying to stay focused, and.. yes... even punctuation and readability. LOL
As I re-read my posting above to say I would lurk awhile as a matter of good taste because I seemed in other postings to be caught in the middle of, or apparently starting difficulties whout intention.
You've all been so kind, as you can see (groan LOL ) my "hmmph" over just a couple ppl and their lack of understanding which you and others posess Cathy of what I am relearning is now over and I am embarrassed but still posting.

Steve, you mentioned in one of your postings in this thread that you have trouble remembering what you did yesterday, or what you have done since your brain injury. Have you ever tried writing you thoughts in a daily journal? I find that I have a better chance of remembering something if I write it down. I keep my journal on the coffee table and write in it several times each day. I have a section dedicated to phone numbers, addresses and appointments, too. Seriously, my journal goes with me everywhere I go!

Also, I bought a small digital recorder. If I have to rememeber to do something, I speak into the recorder... something like, "Go to fiddling tonight. Norman will pick you up at 4:30." Or... "Pay the electric bill tomorrow." And after I pay the electric bill, I delete the messsage. I'm trying to get back to the point where I remember things without having notes strewed all over the place, and the digital recorder really helps! It's also great for recording fiddle lessons. :D

I find I can remember if I kind of check mark it in my mind. After doing something, I'll say to myself, "Now, I HAVE to remember this." It works for me. The thing is, I have no confidence in my memory, so there are times when I'll write a note, speak into the recorder, and even tell Dan to remind me!

In recognition that Steve previously tended to ramble on rather like I do......
(and I too sufferred some brain injury in January 2000 when my right side neck artery gave up the struggle with my over smoking and unhealthy eating and blocked itself thereby starving the right side of my brain causing left side paralysis many hours later)(after I had completed a high speed 250 mile round trip to London and back!!).....

LOL there a couple of doozies you turned up that have nothin to do with me. As I mentioned though, GISMAN produces millions of returns, I get a GIS tech mathematicla toology page.
To get something germaine - key in goggle "Steve Dunbar" + County + GIS - and you will get a page where in the first listing click on the red "view as html" where is says Steve Dunbar, Douglas County Colorado. The Merrick Engineering thing on photogrammetrry specs was an all-day argument I had with them and they used as a resume builder - a .75 million deal on stereo flights of the county and geodeTic densification. - thats me. i don't know about sex offendors - good God where did you turn that up ! Thanks for the hard work in finding who I was ! And Cathy yes you found what I can safely say I remember definatively - my original prodigy name and subsequents. eegads that old prodigy su**** !

I have been busy looking up my old postings you guys turned up.... not vanity mind you but a Quixotic quest for "who I was" in the context of GL rooms, and what did I say.

John - I have not forgotten my last name Dunbar as I think you meant when you found a current posting in alt.music.lightfoot you cited... I just forget profoundly basic things including my name at times, much less currently. Good God man where did u find "sex offendors" under my name ! ROFLMAO ! SERIOUSLY though, there a LOT of Steve Dunbar's out there.

If you do a simple google of JUST "Steve Dunbar" you find an odd plethora of academics ( many are from one fellow who has "publish or perish" white paper citings all over...) and indeed there are some strange ones. Rest assured I am quite the "Ritchie Cunningham" of Steve Dunbar's LOL ! ( At least after my wife made an honest man of me at 23.. ).

Hey guys thanks again for you research; it;s oddly comforting to find old postings of mine I would never have remembered, and still don't when I see them now, but they are indeed comforting insites into old damaged sectors of my neural hard drive. WILL SOMEONE please press "defrag and reformat ? !!!! HEHEHE .

Cathy - great suggestion on the pocket minder. Funny thing though... I do carry one at ALL times for just the reason you mention. I also do carry in my kit a small Pearlcorder as well. I just can't remember to always use them, or refer to them, or remember where they are at times... ! (rimshot) LOL. I DO keep a pocket one always in my ...pocket.

It (recovery) , as u both know I now realize, after a brain injury or or carotid blocking etc. is a return to a *disciplined mind* that involves more work than I ever could have imagined, as the group I attend has echo'd.

Thanks for the kind suggestion Cathy ! And John I am still tracing down all the old postings u found. Oh - and I DO appreciate the compliment John on the -e-town post compliment, and the one on irreverance of sorts to preaching to the priest - metaphorically, and the rocking chair. They responded in a very dignified way though to my mild "kill 'em with kindness admonishments", though, didn't they ?

Steve, my digital recorder is a very small unit, and I find I tend to use it more often if I just put it on a chain around my neck. Now, if I tuck it into my shirt, I forget it's there, but if I leave it out, at least while I'm working around the house, I'm constantly reminded that I need to keep using it. It has become my backup memory.

I'm quite sure that we'd all be quite amused with our old posts. One of these days I have to take the time to look some of mine up... if I dare even read them.

I don't think that we will ever be able to return to to our old ways of doing things. I think our short term memory will come back some, but not to the extent that it was before our brain injuries. I think we just need to learn how to deal with the loss... to learn other ways of doing things.
