Thanks for posting this. I'm gonna check out the other (non-Gord) songs when I have the time.
I knew the song was about his first failed marriage but didn't know it was written before the marriage actually failed. Interesting that there really was a "castle" and in LA of all places.

I've heard Gord mention over the years that they were surprised (stunned I guess) that the song was such a hit. I can't imagine why they didn't see it coming unless he was just too close and the story was too personal. It's such a great song.

"rough around the edges" - huh. Sounds wonderful to me. And shouldn't such a sad song and its emotions be a bit rough around the edges?

BTW I think part of its appeal, beyond the obvious, is the fabulous string arrangement (Nick DeCaro? I don't have the album in front of me to check.)

It's a masterpiece, yes Nick Decaro did the strings

Yes many thanks to Char for that link
I had not previously seen or or even known of the existance on YouTube of the 1974 Midnight Special video of IYCRMM that matches another one of Sundown (that is also attributed to a 1974 German TV broadcast) It was not included in the 1974 Midnight Special DVD

and will be able to save it and covert it as per my method that I painstakingly explained in my erudite posting at:
http://corfid.com/vbb/showpost.php?p...8&postcount=25
that the scumbag from Sydney objected to
I will here try to explain to those who I understand are curious or actually troubled that the insulting that aoccasionally breaks out between that hooligan named Steve and myself is purely the result of the ages long rivalry between those from the mother country and the convict rejects/descendants who were fortuneately banished down under soon after the earlier practice of foisting them off on the colonies on the other side of the pond ceased when they decided to become truly revolting. In fact I know that both young Steven and myself treat this as a bit of fun (I wish to publicly now thank him for saying pretty well just that to me backstage (or at least under it) at Massey Hall last November)
the list of prevoious Rear View Mirror spotlights was most impressive and I looked at a few
the first one that I sampled really surprised me because apparently Roy Orbison's monumental hit "In Dreams was a song he actually conceived in a dream and when he awoke he thought it had been by Elvis but as he had total recall of it he wrote it down anyway!!
Little Eva's Loco-Motion was a very sad tale
I have bookmarked the IYCRMM page and intend returning often to try other songs
I recommend
http://music.cbc.ca/#/blogs/2012/3/R...-With-His-Song
On that page it states that "Today's story is on the stunning interpretation of "killing me Softly with his song by Roberta Flack" but actually supplies nothing of the sort. Indeed I had to refer to the song's wikipedia page to refresh my memory ot what I had previously heard:
that it was partly inspired by Don Maclean (eitther his song Empty Chairs or a concert experience)
However the page about it also featured many other singers including the recently late Richie Havens and the piece about him had a youtube link to his live verson of Gord's song "I Cant Take It Anymore"
(this is the same Woodstck Festival 1969 YouTube video as shown in Char's posting in the relevent SmalL Talk thread about Richie) I have wondered why Gord never recorded it himself, I guess because as Char said Gord wrote it "for and about Richie"?
Yet another link was to William Sjatner's take on Bohemian Rhapsody
(supposedly an "official music video" my foot!!) so it was just as well that the sound system on my desktop was out of action!
"Holy Shatner!!"
OMG my netbook was fully operational
(Karaoke run amok???

I wish Gord had a biography such as Orbison's Dark Star

Roy and Joe Melson pumped out some gems

I think Roy did In Dreams in about 15 mins

I've never played a more non repetitive composition

If one likes the IYCRMM string arrangement, check out In Dreams

I don't know how we got onto this. Hi John
