Tribute Album in AG Magazine

Beautiful: A Tribute To Gordon Lightfoot made an appearance in the March
2004 Acoustic Guitar Magazine Hit List section.

It's a short segment, so I'll type it out.

roster of mostly Canadian artists, including Cowboy Junkies (The Way I

pays heartfelt homage to a shared influence and hero. It is testament to the

introduction for those who missed Lightfoot's 1970s commercial heyday and a
rootsy revelation for longtime listeners who tuned out the sappy, light rock

wow John, don't shoot the messenger... she was bringing good tidings that unto us was written a revue, that some may find critical and others may adore. Ok? Thanks Cathy. The good news is he was written about and it wasn't all that bad (I think he has probably seen worse things written). And remember I wasn't here if anyone asks.

I don't think John was shooting anybody, but I could recommend a target, if he needs one.

Sappy, to my mind, would actually imply too sweet, such as syrup or tree sap...OR...lacking an edge or bite.

Kind of like David Foster producing a Lightfoot tune! (Yes, even Gord can be sappy at times.)

If any 70s artist was truly sappy it was the 1 hit wonder Morris Albert and his Feelings! I've actually listened to that LP all the way through and it's absolutely a barf bag special! The afore mentioned song is truly the only listenable thing on it! The rest is so bad it's no wonder it after 4 years,it still sits at my local record store,still priced at .99 cents with no takers,not even a vinyl-maniac like myself.

Getting back to the real topic here,simply said,it's great to see GL (in any context) get a positive review. Right on! Been me,later!

Feelings is the song that popped into my head the moment my eyes made contact with the word "sappy".

When I was a kid I remember comments about people who were ascertaining love for another as "sappy", that's not so bad, really. Oh well. Funny how we can relate many of Gords' songs to these idioms, but, in reality most of his lyrics are timeless and wonderful in that quality.

Does anyone remember the Gong Show on TV? Folks representing all depths of the gene pool and ranges of talent sang, danced, juggled, etc. before a panel of celebrity judges with a huge gong behind them. The judges could hit the gong to to stop the act immediately and put the audience out of its misery. Anyway, this one episode consisted of every contestant singing "Feelings"-- and not very well. Since then, any time I hear Morris Albert, I wish I had a gong.

Oh yeah,I used to watch "The Gong Show" when I was a kid to about age 12. I believe it was cancelled in '80. I think I did see that one long ago and knowing my humor,I'm sure I found it to be silly and funny. Last year,when that movie about Chuck Barris came out,The Game Show Network re-ran some shows and you know what?...Some of those folks sang better than the kids you see on American Idol. They were still funny to watch but I no longer found "Chuckie Baby" to be all that funny anymore.

I still think when someone was singing,"You'll Never Walk Alone" and he comes out on crutches,then tosses them aside because he feels the song has given him the power to walk on his own,then falls on his face,it's funny even 25 years later! Been me,later!

I saw that too and to put it mildly,that irritated me a bit. It was a thumb's up for the tribute album,and I feel it was like a cold slap in the face for Gordon!!!
I'm going to send them a little polite message and let them know how I feel about it.I've been subscribing to A.G. for a couple years and have always enjoyed it,but that really erked me.{just a note if you or anyone else wants to save a bundle on sub.price for this mag,check out Martin guitars on E-bay,BIG SAVINGS over publisher's price}
