Default Canada Day celebration to Lightfoot music

Paul Bartlet and I got to keep the Gordie tunes rolling on Canada Day.

The Legion Hall in Aurora hired us to play. It was great fun for Paul and I. We played about 35 songs from 1:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon.

The crowd seemed to enjoy themselves and we got many comments of how they loved Lightfoot music.

And we played in front of a big Canadian flag. !!!!! very nice!!

I took videos of most of it.

wow! you guys are very good...
do you have that busy of a Legion everywhere in Canada?
Most of the Legions in USA are empty during the time of day you described, but, is Canada day like 4th of July, a day off work and everybody is doing something patriot? Hey folks, I am learning here... man, on the 4th of July, our VFWs, Legions and other veteran organizations are packed. Sorry for sounding ignorant.
You guys are very good, you have a "talented" voice for getting Gord right.
I'll bet you did have fun.

yes we too have a day that celebrates the day we became a country. July 1 1867. Formerly called Dominion Day..now it's Canada Day.

Our national day, Australia Day (Jan26), is the date in 1788 when white settlers arrived, claimed the land and began shattering the peaceful, harmless, land-respecting lives of its indigenous people. Many Australians refer to the annual holiday as Invasion Day and want to change our flag to one that reflects the background of all its people.

ah..the good old days... colonialism....imperialism....the advancement/spreading of western societies..

Canada was formed from many of the American colonists who did not want to be independent from British governing. We were the 'loyalists'. There was a wave of pioneers who migrated north in the 50 years during and after the American revolution in 1776 to remain loyal to Britian.

For Canada, the attack on Vimy Ridge marked a turning-point in the country's march towards distinct nationhood. In the words of Brigadier-General Alexander Ross, DSO, who commanded the 28th (North West) Canadian Battalion at Vimy,
"It was Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific on parade. I thought then that in those few minutes I witnessed the birth of a nation."

You could argue that we did not become an independent nation until April 17, 1982. Previously, Britain had to rubber stamp Canada's governing policies.

The building the railway (CPR) across Canada, completed in 1881, is another founding moment in Canadian history.

..queue lightfoot music..

Gordon Lightfoot's song The Canadian Railroad Trilogy is a great song about that moment in time. So on Canada Day we celebrate many different moments.

I have never visited Australia. I would be interested in researching the history of that nation.

Is there an Canadian Railroad Trilogy equivalent for Australia??

Is there a Canadian Railroad Trilogy equivalent for Australia? That's an excellent question, John Stinson. If you're asking about an industrial/engineering achievement, I'd say the 1950s building of the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme. (Or being the country that took the America's Cup yachting trophy after more than a century!) But if you're asking about a landmark song recognising a historic national achievement, I'd say we don't have anything approaching Lightfoot's CRT. The nearest I can think of is late country legend Slim Dusty's 1978 song "Indian Pacific", written by his wife Joy McKean. It described the 4000Km (2500-mile) railway linking Australia's west and east coasts, but it didn't say much about the railway's construction, the songwriting was very basic and it wasn't sung with much feeling. Corfid's other Aussies may have better suggestions.

Hey guys. That really was a treat and thanks for sharing it with us.

I'm sure Red Shea would flash a beaming smile had he been there, especially such a special gig being held in his own hometown.

It did the heart good and made me feel very proud.

Looking forward to seeing you both next month.

Cheers, RJ.

Dave would understand!- we have the 'Connex Railroad Trilogy'

if i write that song, it'll go for half an hour! - ("there's now a time in this fair land when the railroad does not run"!

and Char, come down any time - John managed to make it a few years ago!
