> Rotary Series to present Gordon Lightfoot Sept. 20

The Rotary Concert Series will present Gordon Lightfoot in concert at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20, at the Stefanie H. Weill Center for the Performing Arts.

First popular for his 1970 hit "If You Could Read My Mind," Canadian singer-songwriter Lightfoot's folk music has also reached many other artists. Peter, Paul and Mary, along with Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Elvis Presley, and one of his largest influences, Bob Dylan, have all recorded cover versions of Lightfoot's songs.

1974's album release "Sundown" went to No. 1, along with the title song when it was released as a single. In 1975, Lightfoot read about the tragic fate of the Great Lakes ore carrier the Edmund Fitzgerald and the death of her 29 crew members. The song he wrote based on that article became another hit song, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard chart.

"Carefree Highway," "Rainy Day People" and "Early Morning Rain" are just a few more of the timeless songs Lightfoot has written and given voice to.

With nearly two dozen albums that went gold, platinum or double platinum in the U.S. and Canada, Lightfoot has sold more than 10 million albums. He has been nominated for five Grammys and won Canada's equivalent to the Grammys, the Juno awards, 17 times in various categories.

Tickets for Gordon Lightfoot will go on sale Monday, May 21 for $45 and $50, inclusive of all fees. To purchase, stop by the Weill Center, 826 N. Eighth St.. Ticket office hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 4 p.m. To order by phone, call the Weill Center at (920) 208-3243. Tickets may also be purchased through Ticketmaster.
