Dear all,
If you were to introduce Gords music, to a person who had never heard of him.
Which song would be your first choice to play to them?

Frank.

Great question Frank. Depends on the person. For those who are romantic it would be a challenge to top "Beautiful". For history buffs I'd say "Wreck...". "Protocol" for deep thinkers. "Rainy Day People" for us sentimental types.

I could go on but I'll leave rooms for others.

I believe the song that is the "signature" song for Gord is "In My Fashion". This song describes Gord the person to a tee. My second choice would be "Highway Songs". This song spells out Gord's true feelings for Canada.

I'd pick either If You COuld Read My Mind (personal) or Canadian Railroad Trilogy (political). For those who are romantic I'd choose Song For A WInters Night.

Other top choices

Black Day In July
Early Morning Rain
Did She Mention My Name

This has happened to me...I'd choose "Sundown" first...what usually happens is "I know that song, I didn't know that was Gordon Lightfoot". And I say, "Yeah, he's got plenty more" and then play "If You Could Read My Mind" or "...Fitzgerald" And get the same response again!! lol

I tried to introduce GL to my friend by playing,"A Minor Ballad". The reaction to the lyric,"Beyond the wild misty mountain" was..."Oh man!" "That is so corny!"

I guess that might not have been the best choice, despite my thinking that it was.

I probobly should have picked,"Carefree Highway",which if it comes up again,I'll do just that!

We had a our own version of Canadian Idol in my school and I did Carefree Highway. I really did a hell of a job on it and now my whole class knows Gordie only thru the infamous Highway. now I'm gettin more Lightfoot in there and playin it whenever i can.

My obvious first choice would be Carefree Highway,
then the Trilogy,
then Ordinary Man.

If You Could Read My Mind. That's a given. That's the song that shot him to stardom here in the States, that's the song that sealed him in my mind and heart forever, *seared* is more like it. No one could hear that song and not be moved...or changed for life, as I was.

Definitely 'If You Could Read My Mind.' Agree with Sheryl on that one.

Also, 'Canadian Railroad Trilogy', 'Sundown' and 'Carefree Highway' are all what I would consider good introductory songs.

Hey Sheryl! Hate to burst your bubble but I know a few people at my job (guys naturally) and they know the song and make fun of it in the same vein as "Mandy" and "You Light Up My Life"!

So called "real men" don't let things "touch" them too deeply.

Whatever! <---To them!

Obviously the most haunting and poetic song ever written.

Your friends were obvious fans of the Mandy singer.

Gord's version of On Susan's Floor.

I had a "Susan" and I figure just about everyone romances about such a scene somewhere between Letterman and the morning alarm.

If only . . .

Good question. For some reason, the song that really sold me was "The Mountain's and Maryann". So i'd go with that one!

I agree though with whoever suggested In My Fashion, I really love that song
