I can give you the basic answer to your question: "Sunday Concert", "Classic Lightfoot: The Best Of Gordon Lightfoot", and again on "Sunday Concert Plus". I know this thanks to this great site. Florian has a complete listing of GL's music sorted both by album and song. However, I look forward to others' responses because they will be more able to provide insight as to any subtle differences between the three recordings.

Hope this helps until we hear from some of the other members!

They are all the same recording, from the live concert in March, 1969. The original album is Sunday Concert. Classic Lightfoot was just a repackaging of several of his UA recordings. Sunday Concert Plus is the Bear Family CD which contains the original Sunday Concert (11 tracks) plus five bonus tracks. The bigger question is which CD to buy today, if you are looking for Yarmouth Castle.

There are several different CDs which have the Sunday Concert recordings. In the US, there is a CD called "Live", from EMI/Capital, which contains just this one album. In Canada, there is a 3 CD set with everything (5 albums) from the UA period. I think that CD collection is called Original Lightfoot. There is a UK CD (BGO) with two albums: Early Lightfoot (his first UA album titled Lightfoot! in the US)/Sunday Concert, and there is the (German) Bear Family CD mentioned above. This release is a different mix from the others; most people like it better. But the five bonus tracks should be the tie-breaker. Two of the songs are definitely worth having: Spin, Spin and Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues (a Dylan song). They were released only as singles. This album, because it is an import, is relatively expensive, often listed in the $20s. If you shop around, you may find it in the high teens. It's worth it.

Or, when you get drawn in, you will find that you have to have all of them ...

Let me just second what Valerie has said about the Sunday Concert Plus. I bought the standard Sunday Concert about a year ago, before having the benefit of all the smarts of all the people who frequent the GL discussion boards. After alot of rationalization I allowed myself to buy the Plus version -- and after hearing a snippet of Spin, Spin, Spin I decided I couldn't live without that song at my beck and call -- and Valerie is right those extra songs are absolutely worth the extra money. So, if you're going to buy Sunday Concert, opt for Plus.

Believe me, I love Gord, but Yarmouth Castle is one of his weaker efforts.

To The Person Who thinbks that "the Castle" is one of Gord's weaker efforts. Bud and Travis put it one way, "Some people like steak that has to be chewed, and some like baby food, that doesn't. You take your choice." I was just thinking about that song the other day and was looking back on a time in folk music when people were at war with each other about who was a PURIST and who was a COMMERCIALIST. If you really look at the song, it was written in the rue purist form. The purpose of folk music was a means of communication back when not everybody could read and having a printing press in your back pocket was unheard of. The song is a brilliant example of the old trubador format which convied the history of the event and the human emotions surrounding it. I, myself have been singing the song for thirty years and have never failed to provke a tear from someone, and it is always requested by somebody in the audience. So much for the "WEAKER" work of Gord.

Dear Potter,
You didn't ruffle any feathers, I was just staing a point of view of mine. I'm sure there are alot of fans who could say the same thing about any of Gord's songs. I actually know people who don't like IYCRMM, if you can believe that. You're cool!!!!

Hello all,
I wish somebody had told me about the Sunday Concert Plus a few days ago - I have just bought Sunday Concert. However, to add to the question of what is good and what is poor, having recently heard Yarmouth Castle for the first time, both my daughter and I think it is up there with the best, but my wife thinks it is "a little weak". It is all down to personal taste - but I love it.

I would just like to say I feel "Castle"
is a wonderful song. This song tells a tragic story, But the way the acoustic sounds
behind Gords powerful vocals its just beautiful. I think everyone is entitled to there own opinion , I just wanted to share mine.

For what it's worth, I kind of agree with the opinion that "Castle" is truly folk music in its purest form. But that's not to say its not okay to not be as fond of it as some of the other, shall we say, more "upbeat" things that Gord has done. It kind of depends what you find appealing. For some who really like "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" which I feel is ALSO a pure form of folk, these same people find feel that "Castle" lacks the vividness and color of "CRT". I guess it's kind of like comparing apples and oranges. Both songs are excellent, but everyone is going to have different preferences.

Just a little note of interest (and then again, maybe not, but being a mother, well.... ) My son recited the entire song "The Ballad of Yarmouth Castle" as a poem and all from memory for a third grade language fair and won first place for his efforts. Just had to tell you guys that. But then, of course, I'm not biased or anything ....

Stay loose, eh?

Hi LAMS,

I wonder where on earth your son got the idea of learning a Gordon Lightfoot song by heart?

(and such a long one, too).

yardmouth castle is a wonderful song, his vocals give the song life and you can actually picture the boat burning and going up in flames as the song is sung, and to that woman, do you live in the US or Canada, where your son memorized the whole lyrics

lol, Florian,
Why, he just heard it one day and marched right up to me and said, "Mom, I want to memorize that song in case I should ever need to use it one day...."
Why he would pick a song by Gordon Lightfoot .... well, gee, I have absolutely NO idea.

And to Endless Wire, we live in the U.S., actually. "Sunny" California (which hasn't been all that "sunny" of late -- been spending a lot of time "Looking at the Rain" these days!)
