Default Ted Wesley (Singer/Songwriter)

Ted Wesley (Singer/Songwriter)

For those of you who might be interested in other Canadian musicians that sing about “the land” you may want to check out the obscure guitarist and composer Ted Wesley.

Ted put out three fine vinyl albums in the 70’s then promptly disappeared into oblivion. My searches gave no returns until I found Bob Stewart’s minimal webpage (above) last week. Bob too has been frustrated in finding anything further on Ted’s whereabouts.

If I recall correctly, Ted was born in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) but his parents moved back to England shortly after his birth. Some time thereafter they emigrated to Canada where Ted soon fell in love with the ‘north country’ and settled in the North West Territories. He record three albums* of songs about life in the north and although not as “deep” as Gord, has many fine tunes. One note of interest is that Red Shea played second guitar on his albums.
(*on the now defunct Boot Records, Mississauga ON)

As web page author Bob Stewart notes;
“An Internet search reveals nothing at the moment, other than the fact that Ted was nominated for a Juno Award one year and lost out to Gordon Lightfoot - but that is indicative of the calibre of talent that Ted had.”
I was delighted to find Bob’s tribute site as I had yet to digitize my vinyl albums. All of Ted’s albums/songs can be found on this page with the .wma extension - playable on Window’s media player. For a sample tune, check out ‘Bush Plane’ on his second album entitled ‘Straight North’. A nice tune about a prospector who has finished his work and laments the fact that the bush plane sent to get him out probably won't make it because he's "socked in" by fog. In the end he hears the plane's engines as it breaks through.

Ted’s songs can range from humorous to moving - always documenting the joys and frustrations of living in the north. Hoping some of you find his compositions as enjoyable as I did.

Yuri

Hi Yuri!

I too had some albums that were about to get digitized until my brother found the site you were referring to. Grew up in the NWT listening to Ted Wesley albums. My mother recorded them onto cassette and still listens to them in her van.

Your post was found after doing some more digging. Is there any information you can give me about Ted? His last know whereabouts? His parents? Any possibility that may lead to contacting him?

By the way (and you may already know this).... he went to the NWT and started working in the mines at the age of 16. At the time you had to be 18 to work in the mines... he simply lied!

Hmmm... just read my last post and I kinda sound like some crazy stalker or something LOL

Anyway ... no worries.... just a fellow performer who would like to sing the music too.

Hi eonara,
You sound like a fan that appreciated Ted's talent - not a stalker.
I contacted Bob Stewart via his web page on Ted Wesley but he didn't have any further information on his whereabouts or situation. Bob was happy to hear from fans and I got the impression that he may add fan comments to his page - if Ted were ever to stumble upon it. Ted just seems to have disappeared. For those who haven't heard Ted's music, check out the site. Another wonderful artist who sings about the land and it's people.

It would sure be nice to know what happened to him. Where he might be. Perhaps one day he will turn up.

Just an update to 'eonara' and any others who may be interested. Ted Wesley has been found alive and well living in Alberta Canada. Motivated by his many fans, Ted has been working on a new album and I believe is attempting to have his previous albums re-released on CD. Should be available this Summer.

For those not familiar with Ted, read my initial post in this thread.

Read more at his new website below;

http://www.tedwesley.com

A Tribute Site to Ted set up by Bob Stewart can be found below but the music clips have been removed, most likely due to their pending re-release.

I'm am very pleased to announce that I received my copy of Ted Wesley's new release "I remember... Our Northern Heritage".
The Wesleys have done an excellent job on this project!! Simply Awesome!!!
Everything that Yuri said... it's all right on!
As far as I can tell, all songs from the original 3 albums are included here, all remastered (sounds outstanding!)

You're welcome Peter. If you appreciate Gord, you'll probably love Ted Wesley as well. Entertaining, informative and sometimes humerous songs about northern Canada. Like Gord, he has great insight and a true love of the land. Wonderful melodies and great arrangements. Red Shea contributed his talent to many of the tunes. A great addition to any music library!
(Sir John - I've located Ted Wesley's original album covers and would be happy to scan them for you if still interested.)

As the Christmas shopping season draws near... Ted's new CD set is a great gift idea.
(OK, I admit it, I am shamelessly bumping this to the top...)
