Default Gord on the BBC Again 1969-EMR - VIDEO link posted

I took a last minute decision last night to record Singer Songwriters 2 @ the BBC last night, glad I did because when I watched it back it included a live clip of Gord, Red and Rick doing Early Morning Rain on the Rolf Harris Show in either '68 or '69 a nice live clip. I'm sure it will turn up on Youtube sooner or later.

Rolf Harris is another Aussie. Despite living in England for several decades now, his accent is still pure Australian. He plays didgeridoo and was the first to use a wobble board as a musical instrument. Two of his best-known songs are "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" and "Six White Boomers".

He sang "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" on a BBC radio programme with The Beatles doing backing vocals. He adapted the lyrics as follows:

Cut yer hair once a year, boys
Cut yer hair once a year
If it covers your ears you can't hear, boys
So cut yer hair once a year.

Don't ill-treat me pet dingo, Ringo
Don't ill-treat me pet dingo
He can't understand your lingo, Ringo
So don't ill-treat me pet dingo

George's guitar's on the blink, I think
George's guitar's on the blink
It shouldn't go plinkety-plink, no
George's guitar's on the blink

Prop me up by the wall, Paul
Prop me up by the wall
'Cause if you don't I might fall, Paul
So prop me up by the wall

Keep the hits coming on, John
Keep the hits coming on
Till long long after I've gone, John
Just keep the hits coming on.

"Six White Boomers" is a Christmas carol about a joey (baby kangaroo) trying to find his mother in the heat of an Australian Christmas. Santa's sleigh uses six boomers (male kangaroos), rather than winter-loving reindeers, and they help him find his mother.

Good old Rolf, he got Rick's name wrong, he called him Nick. Rolf has had a couple of No. 1s here in the UK, "Two Little Boys" a big Christmas No 1, also "Sun a Rise" I think that hit numero uno over here. He is a very good artist, on his TV program he would paint using 6 inch brushes, and say "can see you what it is yet?"

I have downloaded the program with Gordon, but not being a computer geek have not sorted out how to upload it.

Cop out!!
But seriously Gymbo when you say you "downloaded" it do you mean that you have an actual digital video file somewhere?? (as opposed to a videotape recoding)
If so what is the complete filename? (so that we can evaluate how to make a clip for Youtube) and what is its size? ( so that we can suggest ways to pass it on to somebody who could make the clip for you)

Yes that Rolf Harris is a very talented fellow
My favourite musical paroody is Rolf's royally taking the urine out of Heavy Metal group Lead Zeppelin
I especially love the part where Miss Given brings on Rolf's didgderidoo
Another RH cracker is
The Court of King Caractacus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=DaZT5Am60pE
As Gym said Rolf is also an extremely good artist producing some brilliant paintings like this Australian themed opusl

and live stunning artwork such as in this sweet video of a Jimmy Saville Jim'll Fix It television oerformance

Where is Bru when you want her I seem to recall that Rolf sang The Gypsy at her prompting but I may well be wrong.
Anyway a tremendous find Char. Well done "Old Nick"
So Gym you are off the hook as somebody calling himself "sirlongpass" (not me!!) has done the hard work for you already.
i couldn't help noticing on the youtube page that amongst sirlongpass's other uploadings were several by the group Humble Pie.I initially mistook that as the group that made Billy Connolly with the late Gerry Rafferty famous but no they were the Humblebums. The only youtube videos of that group are audio plus still picturex items.
On a whim I then searched youtube for Conolly videos
Nowadays most of his comedic output is concernrd with Anglo Saxon expletives.and deep blue jokes about bodily functions and liquids , but he is on occasion a fine actor (I recommencdd his Scottish Gillie to Judi Dench's Queen Victoria in Mrs Brown)
I also have two television Billy Conolly World Tour series.(Australia and New Zealand) and was most pleased to find a youtube video of the best part of the former, where Billy gave a very tasteful tour of William Rickets Sanctuary near Melburne. To visit that was one request I made of (catman) Ron Chidgey when he so kindly gave us a sightseeing tour of his home area during our visit back in April 2007 but I got outvoted and we had plenty to see at an animal sanctusry instead (patting a dingo and feeding a 'roo); Anyway here is Billy in serious mode
That forcibly reminds me Ron has not posted here since June 2010 over two years.Has anybody had any contact recently???
I hope all is well with him I'll send him a PM referring to this thread and if I can get the timing right I might try the telephone too

Life just keeps gettin' better I'll tell ya!

This is something that I knew all along was still out there somewhere and thanks to the internet and the wonderful folks here it now has arrived into our living rooms for us to enjoy.

It's clear how the Red Shea lead guitar style was a significant factor in creating the original Gordon Lightfoot sound.

Red Shea lives in this video!

OK not OK??
my corfid PM to Ron remains unread and the hotmail postmaster has reported a problem delivering to Ron's old hotmail address
Ron's Frankston (near Melbourne) address and phone numbers are readily available from http://www.whitepages.com.au but yesterday and early this morning EST I consistently got the local Telstra answering machine so I have left messages for him.
I just hope he is away on vacation.
I also found a reference to his job title with the City of Casey Vic
Next I will PM Dave in Melbourne and ask him to try to make contact as it will be easier for him being in the same time zone (15 hours ahead makes it difficult for me)
Is there anybody here who has had contact with Ron since June 2010??
In my opinion there re far too many previously prolific posters here who are AWOL
For example somebody must be in contact with the usually irrepressible Jessie Joe silent for almost a year now??

JohnFowles,

Thanks for posting Billy Connolly at William Ricketts Sanctuary in the Dandenong Ranges (1 hour east of Melbourne). Yes, it's a wonderful place and it's a pity you didn't get there. It sounds like you were taken to Healesville Sanctuary instead.

I remember the TV series of Billy Connolly's journey across Australia. The episode covering Melbourne and the state of Victoria included the Old Melbourne Gaol (where bushranger Ned Kelly was hanged before the death penalty was banned) and Cheviot Beach, Portsea (where Prime Minister Harold Holt presumably drowned - his body was never found).

Good luck with contacting Ron. I hope he responds soon.

No response yet Dave.so I'll send you contact details later and ask you to try as the 15 hour time difference makes it difficult for me.
Ron and his wife who live in Frankston (South-East of the city of Melbourne) treated us to a wonderful tour of the Mornington Peninsula. They collected us from our Southbank hotel and then down to Hastings for lunch at the highly recommended Pelican Pantry. We drove past a reservoir where Ron had expected to find some 'roos in the wild but when we only found a pair of emus he had a girl in his office contact the.Moonlit Sanctuary in Peacedale who were for some reason not open to the public at that moment.Strings were pulled and the four of us had a special tour. Afterwards we got to see the church at Langwarren.built with money left in his 1960 will by my favourite author the UK born Nevil Shute
(We had arrived in Melbourne after attending a week long gathering oF NS fans from the UK USA Australia and Holland in Alice Springs the subject of arguably the very best novel ever written Nevil's A Town Like Alice

tg, i don't think it's lip synch at all, just out of a synch a frame or two which can happen during youtube's upload/compression process...there are some intentional or unintentional little bits during the performance that help support my hunch....and if Gord were actually giving up lip service here then it's certainly not to one of the studio recordings we (me anyhow) are familiar with

char, can you put the actual video up as the first post in this thread or at least closer to the top, just so it's a bit more predominant in this thread?

i hope ron (and rm!) are all well...i forget why we're discussing Connolly but it's a shame he wasn't at the Rafferty funeral...then again, maybe that made it all the more quaint...
to continue the tangant, here's one of my fave Gerry tunes..this IS lip synch http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=I8UHCqvuUqY

Yer Tis
(There are actually now four youtube uploads of the video:-
the one first posted by sirlongpass
then a copy from gordonlightfoot100 (who uploaded the entire 60 minute 1972 BBC concert as a pair of 30 minute videos (thereby somehow finding a way to overcome the current 15 minute (previously only 10 minutes) youtube limit)
thdem another from tackertoons
And here's another from rareighties that omits the important intro by the young pre grey haired Rolf

OK hands up I'm to blaim for letting myself go well off topic
However my mentioning of the Big Yin (theBig one) was originally partly Gord related
When I noted that the EMR video had been uploaded to youtube by
sirlongpass I was curious to see if he had uploaded any other Gord videos
It was then that I saw that his collection included several by Humble Pie and confusing "pie" with"bums' I thought of Billy.
Funny you should mention "funeral" because I could have sworn that Billy had a small part in the hit film "Four Weddings and a Funeral" but the wikis for both Billy and the film do not prove this.I'll have to rewatch ther video and keep a close eye out for him in it

Can't share the in the love for Rolf Harris that's expressed in this thread, but it was fabulous to see this clip despite him! It comes in at #3 in my top 10 of clips from the series so far here:

Hi John,

I'm still here and reading with interest. You were right I was on vacation to Turkey and Greece when you tried to contact.

All is well with me, still listening to Gord, and following his tours, but have given up hope of ever seeing him live again.

Thankyou for bring back memories of our tour of Melbourne John, it was fun.

keep Smiling Ron.

Hi Char, they are wonderful places to visit, when you come from a country 250 years old, to see places 2500 years old is amazing. The Greek islands are still amazingly beautiful,( saw the sun set in Santarini, then slid down the donkey trail ), but unfortunately Greece is going through hard times, if people are considering a visit, do it now they need our support. There are probably more ruins now they are digging up more all the time, and I think I fell off most. Turkey is great, the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is one of the most exciting places I have been to. You probably wouldn't recognise Turkey it is growing so quickly. Char, now that I have learnt how to survive 20 hours in "cattle" class in the jet, to escape my island home, I still have a visit to the Maritime Provinices high on my " to do " list. So hopefully it will happen.

All the best ( good to see your keeping up the Melbourne Support Joveski )
Keep Smiling
Ron.
