Not really, it's a gigantic tent but very high topped and airy. It's at the end of a pier in the Inner Harbor. As long as you're close in the sound was booming but I wouldn't get seats in the "bring your own chair section" but that's just an opinion. I read some people at shows before this complain about not hearing and my ears are still ringing, lol.





The tall building is the same in both pictures, just for orientation purposes.

Gordon Lightfoot’s soul resonates Pier Six Pavilion

Pier Six Pavilion was filled with the graceful melodies of decades this past Wednesday, as Canadian folk-rock legend Gordon Lightfoot took the stage as a part of his 50 Years on the Carefree Highway Tour.

Lightfoot admitted it had been 15 years since he had last played in Baltimore, making certain to mark his return with a crowd-pleasing performance.

Since his last Baltimore appearance, Lightfoot was inducted into the Song Writer’s Hall of Fame, in June of 2012.

Lightfoot, 76, appeared to be in good spirits—if not good health—despite cancelling a show two days prior due to illness, which Lightfoot described as “walking pneumonia” early into Wednesday’s first set.

Lightfoot’s performance drew a crowd made up mostly of dedicated pension-chasers, speckled with the occasional millennial.

He opened the night with The Watchman’s Gone, a classic from his 1974 hit album, Sundown. Other tunes featured from his No. 1 album included Carefree Highway and Sundown.

Throughout the night, a contemplative Lightfoot would end one of his songs and talk to the audience about memories or the procedures of show business.

After finishing a performance of Carefree Highway, Gordon told the audience that if it seemed shorter than usual, it is because it was; going on to explain how all the songs had to be cut short to fit them all into the concert’s two-hour, two-set time frame.

He spoke with a soft grandfather-like demeanor, sometimes trailing off into his thoughts before shrugging them off and continuing his performance.

Lightfoot’s concluding set featured his most famous single, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which was played to raucous cheers from the crowd.

Midway through the song, Lightfoot caught himself repeating a verse, paused, and with a lighthearted laugh took the verse back from the top, finishing the iconic folk-ballad with an extended standing ovation from the audience.

Fans also lauded Lightfoot with standing applause after his performance of his heartache song If You Could Read My Mind.

Lightfoot played 26 songs during his performance. By the end of the night, Lightfoot showed his loyal Baltimore fans that even after 50 Years on the Carefree Highway, the spirit of the folk rock revival still resonates in his soul.

When discussing modern folk music, there are several individual performers and groups that consistently come to mind…. and one of those is Gordon Lightfoot. With his distinctive baritone voice and classic 12 string acoustic guitar, Gordon has been delighting fans of his music for over five decades. He is nothing short of a legend in the folk-rock genre. At 76 years old, Gordon still tours extensively… to the delight of his fans worldwide. In recent years he has overcome an aortic aneurism and even a stroke to keep returning to the stages and the audiences that he loves.

His most recent tour “50 Years on the Carefree Highway” began in 2013 and is still going strong. One of its recent stops was the Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore, Maryland… and I didn’t miss the chance to hear him play.

There was no opening act. Gordon took the stage on time with his band, including an additional guitarist, bass player, drummer, and keyboardist, and began an approximately 2 hour set with a 15-20 minute intermission. He played most of his classics including: “Sundown”, “Carefree Highway”, “Rainy Day People”, “If You Could Read My Mind”, and of course… “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”. Gordon has a reputation for changing his set around every night… and with over 250 original songs to his name… he certainly has the material to do it! Twenty-six songs were played in all.

The entire show had a very laid back atmosphere with Gordon telling brief and frequently humorous stories to the audience between the songs. For a folk concert, the audience was very energetic with multiple standing ovations and frequent loud cheers and shouts. It was very evident throughout the show that Gordon still really loves what he does, and he left us with no doubt that he will continue to entertain audiences for as long as he is able. His voice is not a deep as it once was, but the classic Lightfoot voice and phrasing is still there. He told us he was recovering from pneumonia and he did stop at least four times to catch his breath… but always between the songs… never during them. Gordon has a very gaunt appearance these days, and he moves slowly around the stage, holding on to things as he goes… but age has not diminished his ability to entertain.

It was a wonderful evening of music that brought back a lot of memories of my time growing up in the 60s and 70s. The performance confirmed why his status as a musical legend is well deserved. I hope he will continue to entertain us for years to come!

Thanks to your great pictures, I just noticed that Carter is now using a Gibson guitar and a Roland Jazz Chorus 120 amplifier. I imagine he still uses a Fender amplifier for the Gibson parts though. I'll be seeing them again in November and will be listening for the change in sound with the Roland and Gibson from Terry's old Gretch guitar sound. It should be his own sound now anyway.

We were here 4 times before, last in 1997, when I remember it was 105 degrees in the evening. It seems like our great audiences are getting more enthusiastic at every show!! Thanks Baltimore!
