No I can't sing very well. I thought I could sing as well as Gord, until I was about 13, but then my voice changed. :D Now forget it!!!

To tune a 12 string correctly, click on the links.

Hello Kerstin,

I definately like all the songs on Salute but then I totally like every song Gordon has done. I even like songs that most people don't.

Playing the guitar was what I did when I was younger. Now my hands hurt with arthritis if I play for any length of time.

My husband and I make kaleidoscopes to try and earn $$ and my hands are pretty tired at the end of the day.

Hope to talk to you later.

Well Kerstin, since you have The Songbook 4 CD's, Id say you have a pretty good bunch of great Lightfoot songs... Can't understand why, "Whispers Of The North" is not on there...

Hi DSR,
You make kaleidoscopes! That's amazing. I used to have one as a kid that I really loved. I haven't seen those around forever.
I saw your webside and they look really special. How long does it take you to make one of them?
have a good weekend.

Hi Jesse-Joe,

all this talk about guitars makes me want to give my guitar another chance! You must be pretty good if you've been playing for 39 years. Do you finger pick?
Did you just say that up there or did you really already like GL when you were 13?
Have a good weekend

My fav singer was Glen Campbell, until 1969, when I bought my first Lightfoot LP. Did She Mention My Name. I only knew the song, "Black Day In July." That was the reason I bought that LP.

But as I listen to the LP, song after song, it didn't take long, for me to get hooked.

Been a Lightfoot fan ever since. Got all the LP's, {16} cassettes, {14} 8 track tapes, and every CD's available... Plus many interviews, ASO.

Still like Glen Campbell, but only have 2 LP's. Today I also really enjoyed John Mellencamp.

To answer your question, yes I was 13 when I started listening to Lightfoot. I will be 52 at the end of 2007.

No Im not a particular great guitar player. Yes I do finger pick. I try to play Lightfoot style.

If it sounds like Lightfoot style, is another thing... :D

Really like to play, 'Restless', 'Knotty Pine,' 'Morning Glory, 'all in the key of 'A'. And 'Early Morning Rain,' w/ Capo up 2nd fret, in the 'D' chord w/ open low 'E' string.

Gordon has said in an interview that the 'A' chord was his favorite guitar chord, mine has always been the first guitar chord I learned, the 'D' chord.

Have yourself a great weekend too!

Hi Jesse-Joe,

wow, seems like once a Lightfoot fan always a Lightfoot fan. Where did you get hold of interviews? I saw some in the archive of a Canadian TV station, I forget what it is called right now.

I think I might give finger picking a try, too. I did fail to learn how to do banjo rolls and gave that up after a few fruitless attempts, but maybe guitar is different. Do they have instruction websides on Lightfoot guitar playing?

Quote: If it sounds like Lightfoot style is another thing...
I always think it does not matter if it sounds the same as long as you have fun playing it.

I have to admit I never heard of Glen Campbell. Have to check into that.

Kerstin,

How did you first get interested in playing the mandolin. I don't think I have ever know anyone who has played one of those.

I just read that you checked out our website. I am glad you like the scopes. Maybe one day this summer we could get together and you can play a little song for me and then look at some of our kaleidoscopes. I have cousins that live in Woodland Hills and it is only an hour and a half drive.

Hi jesse-Joe,

thanks so much for the link to the GL chords. How do you do that: connect a link to a photo? Very cool. I can just about manage to connect to the internet!
Is your 12 string a Gibson, too? I have a Gibson J-50 which I bought when I visited the States for the first time. I really like it, eventhough in bluegrass music it is kind of frowned upon. Haven't played it in years though.

The Tutor on this Site is, mon amis, Sir John Fowles, A real pro on computers. He's taught me a lot of things here. I wouldn't be able to teach you much, not good at explaining things. I suggest if you want to learn the ropes give him, a try.

We should really get out of this testforum, Kerstin.

This has to be one of the longest threads on testforum. Better to go on Small Talk, or if the stories relate to Lightfoot then on General Discussion...

Hi DSR,

I loved the kaleidoscopes. They're beautiful. Nothing like the one I used to have as a kid which was just some kind of cardboard construction you could turn and then some pieces of coloured glass would move inside and form patterns. I wonder if my parents still have it.
Yes, let's get together. Sounds like fun. I always thought Orange County was much further away from Woodland Hills than it actually is. I 1/2 hours is not so bad.
When I first started liking bluegrass music I wanted to play the banjo, but I was totally hopeless at it. Then I heard Bill Monroe play one of his breakneck speed mandolin instrumentals and that's why I started playing the mando. It's not so difficult to learn. Not like the banjo. Sometimes I think playing the mandolin keeps me sane because it is so relaxing. But some people would argue about my sanity.
Have a good day.

Hello Kerstin,

I am in Portland, Oregon for a few days. My mother in-law is leaving this earth for a better place. We came to say good bye. I will still be on line though.

I started talking to my husband again about Texas. You just never know.

Hi Dream Street Rose,
I am very sorry to hear about your mother in law.

Yes keep talking about Texas. Would be nice to see you over there. With my husband it's like if I just mention something often enough he will give in just to shut me up.

I'm leaving for Germany on Tuesday, but just for a week. It's my dad's birthday. So from Tuesday on all my replies will be a day late.

Be happy and safe,
Rose :D

Hi Dream Street Rose,

You,ve convinced me!! Now you just have to convince your husband! Maybe some more Texas Texas should do it.

It'll just be a quick trip to cold and rainy Germany, but it should be fun. If only we did not have to sit in an airplane for 11 hours.
Oh, I just found a Gordon Lightfoot song that seems to have a mandolin in it: Alberta Bound.
Of course I'll keep emailing.
Have a good Sunday.

Hi, Kerstin, and welcome to our little world.

A couple of questions:
Do you know how to read guitar tablature?
If so, do you like If You Could Read My Mind?
How long have you been playing guitar, and what are your favorite songs to play?

Hi Cathy,
good to meet you.
Well, I used to play guitar for about 7 years before I started playing the mandolin and I haven't played it again until yesterday when I dusted it off and tried it again. I'm a bit rusty at it to say the least, but I enjoyed it a lot so i think I'll try learning a few Lightfoot songs. How about you? Do you play?
Yes, I do read TAB. I think I would be totally lost without it, eventhough I do read music, but it's too much work.
Of course I like "If you could read my mind", but the first one I would like to learn is Don Quixote. I'm totally hooked on that one.
Have a good day.

Hello there Kerstin,I'm Borderstone (aka Walter) and let me excuse myself first for not saying hello sooner.

I rarely use this part of the discussion boards anymore,so I just now noticed your thread. Like the rest here I wish you a great big welcome to our group.

Like you,I never knew Gordon's works either until 2001 when I bought the Songbook Box Set. I'd heard his U.S. "hits" but from 1974 on never really got into his stuff.

I still don't know what made me wamt to have that box set, since I'd had a handful of his LPs for awhile but never really played them.

Whatever the reason,I'm so glad I did becaue I get to talk to all of the people on here and of course, just attended my second concert on Jan. 28th. Met him again and got pictures & 2 signed albums.

Anyhow, have fun here! Bye for now. :D

Hi, Kerstin. I've been playing guitar since I was about 8 years old. Let's see... 44 years now. Wow. That really doesn't seem possible!

I keep saying I'd like to give the mandolin a try. I play fiddle, which uses the same tuning and fingering. Everytime I go into the local music store, I'm so tempted to buy one. One of these days I'll just break down and do it.

Don Quixote, huh? You aren't picking an easy one, that's for sure. I play it, but I usually play lead on that one, and I've never tabbed it out. It would be quite complicated.

Why don't you mail me your e-mail addy, to cathy@cathycowette.com, and I'll send my tabs to IYCRMM. It's a much easier picking pattern, a good one to start on.

Derek Kidd, a newsgrouper, and I recorded DQ a few years ago, at a house concert at Val Magee's place, and we played it once at an open mic. It's a great song!

?????????????????????????????????????????????????
n a May 2005 posting at:-
http://www.corfid.com/ubb/ultimatebb...=003205#000002
I had asked then newbie Claudia (another firm fan from Germany):-
"I was wondering why it appears that Gord is still very popular in Germany. Any ideas??"
if you click on the director link at the top of each page then enter the keyword Germany and select "search only location"
from the drop down list under the keyword box you will find no less than 21 members who have registered from Germany, at
least one of whom is from Hamburg. If instead you search for hamburg you will find that there is in addition a fine fan who
took the pic for Char at Niagara last Saturday the renowned photographer and corfid member #114 Dan Risoto, but he hails from
the "other" Hamburg in New York State just to confuse you!!
I am writing this to add my welcome to another recent discoverer of the magic of what our good friend Jessie Joe likes to
call the "poet genius".I suspect I speak for a lot of us seasoned fans here by saying that it warms my heart to read each
newbie's story of that discovery, followed by their first impressions, followed by their successive requests for advice in
purchaSing of the 20 original albums and the Reno DVD,followed by their inevitable questions which we are all very keen to
answer
In fact Kerstin you must make yourself familiar with the encyclopaedic contents of Wayne Francis's site at:-
http://www.lightfoot.ca
where on his radio/television appearances page at:-
http://www.lightfoot.ca/radioapp.htm
you can nead
GERMAN RADIO - Oct. 29, 1975
Taped at Lightfoot's Frankfurt concert, this radio special included stellar performances of Bend In The Water; Don Quixote;
If You Could Read My Mind; All The Lovely Ladies; Sundown; The Auctioneer and Canadian Railroad Trilogy
and on his "chronology" page for the 70's at:-
http://www.lightfoot.ca/chron03.htm
you can read that in 1975
"In October, he makes a brief tour of Europe with stops in Amsterdam, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt and finally at a sold out
Royal Albert Hall in London" (a concert I missed as I was unaware that it as on dammit)
In fact Wayne lists the setlist for the october 28th Frankfurt concert (from the Jahrhunderthalle) at:-
http://www.lightfoot.ca/751028.htm
and a fine recording was made of this concert (a few tracks of which I heard on the UK BBC radio 2, but when I phoned the
Beeb to try to track the album down I was informed that it was only availabe to radio stations nevertheless a bootleg copy
exists
In addition a while ago a nice live video of Sundown was floating around attributed according to the filename to "disc074"
and/or Germany

Last year I bought on ebay a copy of the 1974 'Midnight special"DVD

and was somewhat surprised to discover that the Sundown video on it (my main reason for buying the DVD of course, not being
in any way a fan of the Fat Man) was in fact the same as the alleged German TV appearance

In addition there have been a number of German market specific GL releases
such as an interesting compilation:-
which as an ebay seller once opined
"it's a nice career retrospective, covering music from the 60s up through the late 70s"

For once this is not yet another regurgitation of The first five United Artists albums as you can see by the contents
listed at:-
http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfoot/I'M_THE_ONE_contents.htm
Plus much more importantly is the Hamburg record label Bear Family
which has issued three attractive CDs based on the first five UA albums with bonus tracks
see their GL page at:-
http://www.bear-family.de/mailorder/...epid=bearonly&
Dang I was intending this as a suggestion that Kerstin try to locate these whilst in Germany
thus avoiding imnport charges and shipping should she try to buy them in the States but I expect she is already there and
will not see this in time sorry.
Yet another german-born fan is Gunther Wandtke, now in Sydney Australia who had obviously heard of Gord in Germany

Hi Johnfowles,
thanks for the links. I will check them all out as soon as my son gives me some peace and quiet for a minute.
Looks like Gordon Lightfoot is more famous over here in Germany as I thought, oops. Maybe I can plead ignorance by the fact that he made his tour over here when I ws 2 years old.
The Bear Family label is actually not in Hamburg, which is where I am at the moment, but in Hambergen, which is a few hours away from there. Post me a list of all the CDs you are looking for and I will see if I can find them. Are you in England?
