The Gordster must have quite flexible fingers! If I tried to do an A formation like that I'd end up either muting the high E string or playing an A6.

Looks to me like the Harmony chord is just a good ol' G major to me. His 4th finger seems to be off the finger board. If he's hitting the high G (capo not withstanding,) with his 4th finger,then he's adding a D to the chord.

How many folks play a G that way with the first 3 fingers and how many of you play it with the 2nd 3rd and 4th finger leaving the index finger free?

I've seen Gord do it both ways depending on the individual need. I tend to play it with the the index finger free. Its easier to do a C/G that way.

Hello Paul, I know that the famous "A" chord, your supposed to be able to play the high E string open. But when you play the chord "A", such as pic #1, the high E is muted.

But remember the correct way to play it, is with fingers, 1,2 and 3. and leave the high E open.

Depends on the player I guess...

You may be right Mike, I myself can't tell.

But I agree with you that to leave the index free, its easier to go from "G" to "C", if that is what you meant.

Well, I play the mini-barre A chord, don't mute the high E, and I don't think my fingers are hyper-extended. For some reason (I have no idea why), that's how I first learned to play the A. I think my guitar teacher taught me to play it that way. I had trouble with it for a few weeks, then finally played it cleanly on his Taylor. It took a few more days to play it cleanly on my Martin. Now I usually play the barre (well, on the rare occasion when I play), although I use the 3 fingered version occasionally depending on the chord progression.

As I recall, the trick to it is consciously pressing down with the middle of your finger, while simultaneously consciously lifting the base. Sounds tough, I agree, but that's how I learned it.

Now if I could only play the rest of the chords.

I'm afraid I'm not playing an A in the one or two posed pictures of me with my guitar.

But several Lightheads did see me play it back in 2002 (I think it was), in my living room in CT after a group of us met for dinner. All the guitar players played a nice slow version of SDYS, at about the speed I could handle. So they all would have seen me play the A that way.
