I am surprised at you Mike. Amongst the earlier immature blatherings of the demented and delusional idiot from Sydney , Steve he dared to display a preposterous (out of his bottom) map of the world printed upside down slmilar to this which is one of a number on an interesting if controversial site at:-

By my reckoning Mike relative to Steve therefore you should have said "up here"

Golly Moses bumper crop time
I found that Gord has included the word "world" (no not the world word) in no less than
15 songs as follows:-
1.Of your dream world comin’ true With one less friend to call

2.Or meanderin' alone, we can face the world forever or we'll

3.There's one less cause in the world to be leavin' for

4.And I need to be there when the world get's too heavy

5.in step with the world she’s in Never knowin’ never feelin’ Showin’ so much pride

6.The oceans of the world were the home of big blue

7.Take this world and build it as you please

8.With the most feet in the world Another street where boy meets girl

9.I been all around the world,oh how I long to see you smile

10.How the world fell on his shoulder

11.where once the world was young as spring

12.We live in a world where tears must fall like rain

13.I have searched the whole world over looking for a place to sleep

14.All the world at our command

15.Rock my world to sleep

and for a change one by Bob

Ring them bells so the world will know that God is one

so today's competition is can anyone name all 15 without recourse to google

FYI
I had googled for "lightfoot lyrics world" and culled those 15 from the first 9 results pages (which covered 90 out of a total of 183,000 results)
I also found that result number 81 led me to a "myspace" page devoted to Gord at:
http://www.myspace.com/lightfootfanpage
which is the same as the page my google search found at:-
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...endID=29382343
both feature a section/box headed
"Gordon Lightfoot's Friend Space Gordon Lightfoot has 517 friends"
and on the page are many messages including one from "fuck steve the bear"
and another from "the divine Miss M a.k.a."thunderwoman"
who must be someone from Jax
nice pic of her with her bass

well done Mary how did you find that site??

John,

We all have our crosses to bear in life .... and living in Sydney is one major impediment ....

Now Steve my friend,

As for quoting ARIA charts, that's fine .... I'm familiar with them as well .... but they do not accurately represent state sales.

TWOTEF most decidedly made the charts on 3AK and 3XY .... two of the more progressive rock music stations (at that time) in Melbourne.

As for "You are what I am", (great song BTW) I spent half my adolescent life listening to the radio .... and never heard it once in Melbourne.

Mike,
OK point taken Mike re the ARIA charts.
A progressive radio station in Melbourne though? Surely an oxymoron. Thats like saying
" a simple technical instruction issued by John Fowles"...lol

I didn't hear it back then either ..(You Are What I Am)- I played it to my wife a few hours ago and told her it was one of only 3 that charted - she had never heard it.

I can't agree that it is in his top 100 though..still.. As the acknowledged epitome of charity and open mindedness on Corfid I understand that a Melbournian may struggle to stay in touch with reality.

I first heard Gord in a grade 9 English class in 1968. It was a year after CRT was released -- and that was the beginning. Still recall sitting in that class just mesmerized by that song. Immediately went out and bought the almum. Oddly, after almost 40 years since then, I still remember the name of the fellow who brougt in the album to play - his name was David Wooton .... perhaps he even posts here. If he does, thanks Dave ... brought me a lifetime of music that both me and my brother love. In fact, my bros takes guitar lessons with none other than Red Shea himself ... and he (bros) is a very good guitar player.

Nope, crikey is not a "cuss" word .... it's an exclamation of surprise ... much like our other famous and peculiar expression "strewth", or the English saying of "Cor Blimey".

Therein lies the simplicity of life downunder in the GSL .... take the English language, mangle it, and call it your own ... it's a dialect called "strine" ..... which is a truncated version of the word "Australian".

<<or the English saying of "Cor Blimey".>>

I've often wondered why we use that expression. I think it originates from the very unpleasant 'Blind me' from way back - cant remember which period of time exactly - got to be Medieval or before. More distasteful, dont you agree?

"Early Morning Rain" as sung by Judy Collins from her "Fifth Album" (1965). Had me checking out the composer, which sent me to this guy Gordon Lightfoot, and the rest is history. Great album by the way, with "Pack Up Your Sorrows" and "Thirsty Boots" among others.

Everybody!!! Be very, very careful not to play Journey's,"Lovin'.touchin',Squeezin"" around Sydney Steve!! :D

I guess Steve may also be a bit leary around anyone who's got any John Denver to share.

Just kiddin' Steve!

I do believe that all these "curses" are in effect ways of saying things in an unblasthemious way. and a lot of such expressions owe their existence to the inventive humo(u)r of Londoners born within the sound of Bow Bells (in other words the bells of St Mary-le-Bow, Cheapside.) the famous "cockneys" most of whom in the 1780s were petty crooks or convicts and after the American Revolution stopped their expulsion to North America were sent down under where as we know they still cause trouble
Indeed corblimey seems to be an alternative to "gorblimey"
from G-d Blind Me and crikey and its mate cripes an alternative for "christ"

Ok I think this is enough off topic for one page so I will start a new small talk topic

The first song I heard was "The Wreck" (surprise, surprise) in perhaps third grade when it came out. I made enough of a fuss about it that my parents gave me "Summertime Dream" for my birthday. It was the first LP I ever owned. "Race Among the Ruins" quickly became my favorite song.

"Summertime Dream" is also the only recording I have owned in LP, cassette and CD format. I have owned several in two formats, but only one in all three.

Hi everyone,

It has been a while since i posted here. I was just 8 years old when I first heard " Beautiful" on the radio. My older brother was listening to it, I liked the melody to it and asked my brother who was the person singing. Ever since then I would listen to Lightfoot's music because there was somethng about the words and the music that I understood and could relate to. That is why when i first join this group,i said that my siblings thought I was an odd ball. I still love his music . Does anyone know if he will be doing any concerts this year?

Yes "spaniel" Wayne Francis certainly has the ear of EMP (Gordon's management company) and if you venture to visit the enticingly named link "Tour dates 2005 - compiled by Wayne Francis" on this site's home page you will end up at last years tour schedule page:-
http://www.lightfoot.ca/2005.htm

Oops Florian the link to the current year needs to be added:- http://www.lightfoot.ca/2006.htm
Where you can see details of no less than 23 concerts already announced out of a mooted 35-40 this very year 3 of which as reported in another topic are already history.
The next are this week in Niagara Falls see the topic "casino concert"
There follows a number of February dates in Florida
I see that you are in California I would have thought that following last year's 4 successful CA concerts Gord is likely to return there sometime this year but like the rest of us you will have to keep a watch on Wayne's site (or pollstar) to discover future dates as and when they are revealed
I trust that helps
John Fowles

I am not sure which of Gordon's songs was the first one I heard, probably Early Morning Rain, this thread has reminded me of something a good mate of mine said about a Lightfoot classic. Several years ago whilst serving in the RN I was on a ship alongside in Mayport Navy base in Florida. One night enjoying a drink in the CPO mess with my buddie, he checked out the juke box, came back and said, 'there is a Gordon Lightfoot record on there' I asked him 'which one' His reply, 'It is something like "The Wreck of The Englebert Humperdinck". I had a good chuckle over that. Sadly he was not converted. Preferring to remain loyal to Neil Diamond.

Like most of you on this site, the "first song ever I heard by GL" was the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Came on the radio one day, got blasted away by it, and just had to buy the album which it was on. After I purchased Summertimedream, I got to liking other songs as well. now I think I'm a full-fledged GL fan. (At least I hope so I am. )
