Hello Sierra,
I am glad you posted. Thank you sincerely. Forgive Watchman, it his place in this board to do what you title "flame". Easy Watchman!
I am glad you mentioned this abject quality of our recent topic, however, it gives me a chance to elaborate on some thoughts regarding this "private" concept. We all know that when our "friend" returns to the stage after that long of a time frame he could (just could, everybody) have some difficulty (from which we could produce a long list of possibilities). I would not want to think that he comes back to fans who don't want to see just his next concert or one like many that have previously been... does anyone follow me here?
Ah well, I have rewritten it 10 times, does gratitude fit? Our gratitude that he would want to come back to perform after this experience in his life? It will be a special time for him and all of us, but, only if it happens. No wet blankets here, you just say "Ay" or "Nay". But, he still has a long way to go...
Watchman was right with "we are just a bunch of fans eccited over Gord's recent interview".

I honestly don't remember what forum I was reading, but there was a comment posted from a young person that had never seen Gord, just heard his songs on the radio. She either went to a concert or seen him but was appalled at how he looked and what he sounded like. I would hate that to happen with Gord's comeback, a few faithful and (yes) grateful followers would be just the ticket. I had mentioned once after his hospitalization that since he had been intubated it may have caused some damage, in his interview he did say that he had sosme effects on his voice, we don't care. I think we would be just what the doctor ordered, so where will the concert be?

I still think Gord will do a few "full dress" concerts before he decides if he wants to go back on the road. What I mean by that is maybe rent a hall or soundstage and do a few closed concerts which could be videotaped for his (and other's) assessment.
Knowing his desire to give an audience their money's worth, I can't imagine he'd do it any other way.

Sierra,
Sorry for the "scratch" comment and "who care's" comment. Maybe I could have worded it differently.
You have made it known that you have no interest in such an event and in an attempt at dry humor, I was trying to accomodate you. It's kind of like if a few people are talking at a party about wanting to go and see one of their favorite book authors at a private dinner theatre, and all of a sudden a stranger comes over to them and wants to know why they are interested in such an event. One of the people politely explains to them why they are interested and the stranger tries to still argue his/her points as to why he-she is still not interested. What do you think the response from the group would be? Probably something along the lines of "ooooookay, so we won't invite you to come with us." If you expected me to respond like I did after you posted (you think I flamed you), we both must have picked up on the same things in your post. So, we have no conflict then.
I wrote "who care's" because you got your question answered and still went on your soap box. Your entitled but I was trying to see what the big deal was. Hence, "who care's." In essence, you were saying the same thing to us.
I really wonder about all these people who post "unregistered" and claim that they have been reading the forum for a really long time but are too busy to post. Then when they finally do post, a comment is always made about my past posts. Interesting. I can't help but wonder if some of these people are actually regular posters but are too afraid to post certain comments under their regular names.

Watchman,
I am sorry, but BillW's explanation was mostly what was meant by a private concert not why you all would like to have one with the exception of his last line "but it would be fun if we could all get together and do it, don't you think?" (and yes, BillW, I do) so I offered an alternative to achieve that without the stress of organizing a private concert. I thank BillW again for explaining it.
It was only after "our" little repartee that
gwen synder and brink offered a reason why they would like to see a private concert happen which is what I originally asked for in yes, a long-winded way. Thank you, gwen and brink for seeing beyond my "soapbox" LOL, and answering my question...which BTW, Watchman, you never answered. All you did was a critique on my style of posting. And it's the first time you posted on this particular thread. Is it possible that maybe you agree with me about private concerts so flaming me was all you have to say on the subject?
And just because I expected your answer does not mean that I felt anything I said was flameworthy, but that past experience shows me, you have difficulty with anyone saying anything slighty controversial and feel the need to respond to that and not to the question at hand. Hmmm....slight anger management and control issues?
While I might disagree with some of the posts, I did it by stating my opinion with politeness and did not bash anyone personally until you bashed me. It's called defense. And BTW you stated you said it with dry humor...well so didn't I, evidenced by the winking smiley face. You can dish it out, but can't recognize it when it's done to you.
And lastly, yes I have been lurking for a few months but I am not too busy to post, just was never moved or too intimidated to do so before this. This can be a very volatile site. I thought this was a fairly innocuous post to ask a question and offer my alternative views to get into dialog and learn more about you all. And if you go back and read my original post, I never once mentioned you or your posting habits, so I don't get the connection you make that I could be a registered someone too fearful to answer you under their registered name.
This was the first time I posted and it will be my last. Most of you seem like very nice and friendly people. (gwen and brink, it says alot about you that you both want Gord's first foray out on the road to be easy and full of support.) But this is too much work to be fun. You win.

VOLATILE???? oh my dear Sierra you must have lived a sheltered cyberlife. With rare exceptions this is one of the most friendly, polite, laid-back bunch of folks I've ever posted with. Nary a cuss word to be found, apologies for unintended toe-stepping, smilies freely given to one and all. Really. Sort of a reflection of Gord, in a way. We get a little excited from time to time - it's human nature, after all. Try us again sometime when you've wandered down darker, meaner cyber streets.

Thanks Sierra and please comeback any time and watch the Watchman, he can be very (even feircely) overprotective, I think it is his nature and don't take it personally, he just likes to be politically correct when he lambasts others. Please consider coming to the bash if you are that big of a fan of Gords' we wouldn't want you to miss it!!!!! And I would love to see Watchmans' reaction. Oh, well, anyway I am glad you mentioned the comments that you did, thanks Sierra!

Sierra, Our cyberlives would be pretty boring if we all agreed. I have been posting since August or September and I still keep my keyboard to myself sometimes. It's really all good fun because as I have said before, I think every GL fan I have met has been very nice and quite a good person. Do come back and visit and post too. We're all here for the same reason!

Sierra,I know he doesn't actually live there anymore (otherwise I could hardly call myself a knowledeable Gordon Lightfoot listner and or fan.) I was referring to the fact that he is there right now and also, what better place to see him than his own hometown? Don't worry about us "burning" you, whatever that means,we're all just friendly GL fans! It's been me and I'll see you on the flipside of Sundown!

I think as long as we're kicking this one around is that a lot of us are scared that he will never perform in public again, that his singing voice may never be the same again. I don't care if he misses every other note myself but the casual fan often posts here that " I done seen him and he ain't the guy I seed in 1969, nor sirree ". No one who posts regularly here is a "casual" fan by anyone's definition. So I guess the root cause or "attraction" of the private party/concert idea is that even if he's not up to par most of us would pay 4 or 5 times of his "old" ticket prices just to get our hands on one more. But I hope he gets back on the road and we can all meet, many of us have BTW, at a public concert. If we do I would hope you would come up and say HI, we're all pretty safe.

I think it is fair to say that if you admire someone, you would prefer to be around them in a more intimate environment. I do not think it to be elite or wrong to want a private concert. It's no different than driving down a lonely road, without another car in site. It simply has a different feel than bumper to bumper rush hour traffic.
