Re: The Sixties
i went from 5 years of age in mid 1960 to 14 in 1969...huge changes during those years - from a start in kindergarten to a young teen..the latter part of the 60's is what I remember the most..it's a different world now - that's fer sure!

Re: The Sixties
Wow! That brought back some faded memories Princess phones and transistor radios were a must in my neighborhood.
My head is full of sixties music now. Especially Summer In The City. I always loved that song.
Thank You for the smile, Yuri.

i was born in '61 myself, but as I got into elementary school, I used to drive my mum nuts for a transistor radio. I wanted to take it to school all the time, & the one time that I did, I didn't have the nerve to admit that I had lost the thing on the playground, especially as she didn't even know that I had taken it to school! I must admit, though, it was nice being able to listen to your favourite artists whenever & whereever you like. You just had to have a boatload of battteries is all.

Re: The Sixties
I had a little Panasonic transistor radio I saved up for when I was just a kid; for years that radio went everywhere I did...once I was sitting on a bridge, bumped it, and it fell about 30 feet into the river below. Ran down, waded in and found it. Brought it home, dried it out, and it still worked like a charm. That poor radio suffered all kinds of mistreatment...left it in the back window of the car one very hot July afternoon, and the plastic casing warped...had to use two thick rubber bands to hold it together so the battery would stay put. I have to hand it to Panasonic...that baby was built to last.
And I can still remember how it felt hearing "Sundown" coming out of that little speaker....

Re: The Sixties
Boy was I proud of my transistor radio. First kid on the block with such a high-tech device. I was the envy of the neighbourhood. I still have it though I don't recall the obsolete make. Two-tone 'bakelite resin' plastic - orange and cream. Had a little metal stand that toggled out on the back. Real leather case! Boasted that it had, count 'em, three transistors. AM music, round the clock! Buddy Holly, The Honeycombs, Doris Day, Del Shannon, Patsy Cline Elvis and of course, The Beatles, etc, etc. Gord was just getting his start. Yesterdays iPod! Man, what memories.....

And you're still the envy of the neighborhood! I can't believe you still have it!

Re: The Sixties
I'm a pack rat Pam - I found out long ago that if I throw something out, I'll need it the very next day! That even goes for a tired old transistor radio

Re: The Sixties
fun thread, yuri...love your story, sharron i can really relate to it
i have a variety of those little radios that come in most handy during power outages (some have the solar or hand crank (dynamo) power charge feature but the one i've been using the past 10 years just runs on AAs and doesn't seem to eat them up
i highly recommend it if one is looking for last minute gifts for those who (think they) have everything
i use to nod off to sleep (sleep timer), to wake up (radio alarm), to take to the washroom for shaving, etc and also down to the kitchen...the reason i use it instead of having music blasting on my bigger stereo set up is that i need to hear for Jr when he's out of eyesight so i can easily and quickly turn down the sound ...but i just also like the old tinny sound
does anyone have that BOSE all in one unit? they are supposed to be quite nice sounding
it often follows me to the outdoor shack when i'm looking for something...having music in the background makes the aggravating nature of looking for a misplaced something (usually small) more tolerable...i listen to either 1050 oldies or 740 (a station for oldies, lol...but it's plays quite a lot of early Lightfoot every day as well as many melodic classics...not so much the Dance type oldies, which i was never big on)

Re: The Sixties
nice, those things are pricey (or good reason i suppose) or i would have bought one as a gift
another non-hitech item i have in one room is this and it was only $150 from Sears:
http://www.audiobuys.net/Teac/1930.htm
it can hookup to my main stereo for recording LPs to tape or CD or for fuller listening using external speakers, but i've just left it as is (no cords to worry about, just plug and play)...it's paying tribute to the all in one Lloyds system that i grew up listening to GL tunes to...you know, the cassette, 8 track, radio, LP player with bad speakers...i blew the woofer out in it's first week so most bass-y songs like Sundown were listened to over and over with that broken woofer sound effect, lol
anyhow, back to the 60's..i am just listening to an LP collection of carols with dinah shore, jim reeves, steve and edie, goulet, como, bennet, willaims, etc ...sweet stuff, just a bit crackly, lol

Right now, I believe I'm one of the biggest pack rats around. I know this as I just finished cleaning out some dresser drawers today & I found some stuff that I have absolutely no clue what it is, why it wound up where it did or even how it got there. I even found THREE unused tins of Altoids in one drawer, one of them hadn't even been unwrapped! How's that for being a packrat?
