Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !
The Gypsy That will be a good one!
I love that song...well, I love pretty much all of them but that's going to sound really nice when you sing it.
Glad you got your girl and happy to hear that she puts up with your singing in the shower...lol.
That's funny about your Dad and the silly voices. I guess you picked it up more than you realized so it turned out okay for you both.
I hope things work out for you and Massey.
I just think it would be so much fun for you and the other musicians to meet and play together.
If I could play anything at all I would go and join in....lol. They always look like they are having so much fun...very joyful experience for all of them.
Have a good weekend

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !
Okay then, I'll be adding Your Love's return. I absolutely love that song. Great chord progression. Such a real expression of remorse and love.
to all of you: because you have been so gracious in your response to my videos I am inspired to take my playing to the next level. The gypsy is going to have an interesting embellishment. It will take me a week or two to get it right, and I have to be out of town for a week coming up here soon, so you'll have to wait a bit. But I want to get it right for you.
Best wishes. DawnsMinstrel

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !
Well, I am excited to hear "The Gypsy"
It is interesting to hear all the different covers of various Lightfoot songs but that one doesn't get much notice. I am thinking that it might be one of the more difficult ones to play?
Take your time, we all know it will be well worth the wait, Tim.
All your offerings so far have been really wonderful and thanks for being so gracious as to take requests...very nice of you and very much appreciated

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !
Hi Nightingale. Thanks so much. Another one is going up tonight. I'll let you be surprised. I'm not sure why The Gypsy doesn't get covered. It is not a difficult chord progression, but I guess it's maybe a little unusual in that it doesn't begin on it's tonic chord. So if you're trying to learn it by ear maybe that makes it a little hard. I don't know if there is any printed music for it, but if there is it shouldn't be too hard to learn. Maybe it just hasn't been heard that much. It's on an early album. But I'm with you. it's really neat song. I love the lyrics. They both profound a subtly humorous at once.

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !
That sounds great, Tim
I love surprises
I am sure whatever you put up will be good
Yes, I guess The Gypsy wouldn't be one of his more well known songs.
He is one of those artists that you discover his music a little at a time.
I am still learning about him and all of his wonderful songs from the people here and I have a lot more to uncover. There is still a lot of his music that I don't have yet so I have a long way to go.
But, that's a good thing Always a new song to hear and a few more to love.
He is such a great talent and, as you say, many of his lyrics are very profound and subtly humorous at once.
He has a very wonderful way of singing about life and all of the experiences a person can have...he makes you believe that he has lived it all.
Who knows, maybe he has

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !
The Gypsy
(F) Step inside my (Em) tent, said she, I'd (G) like to read your (Am) palm
(F) Leave the dollar (Em) in the jar, this (G) won't take very (A) long
(F) Leave the circus (Em) noise behind
(Dm) Close your eyes, re(Am)lax your mind
I'll (F) tell you if you (Em) should quit now or (G) if you should go (A) on
Then I said, (A11) "Now what do you see"
She said, (A) "deedly-dum, (A11) deedly-dee"
(A) "Where'll I go oh, (A11) what'll I be"
She said, (A) "deedly-dum, (A11) deedly-dee"
She threw some sawdust in the air and her hands began to shake
She told me the town where I was born and she almost knew the date
She lit a candle with her eyes and then she made the table rise
She took the dollar from the jar and then she guessed my weight
Then I said, "Now what do you see," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
"Your are so old, your are so wise, deedly-dum, deedly-die"
"Give me a sign, tell it to me," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
Then she spoke most quietly, oh, deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
When you were a child at school they taught you quite a lot
You were told when you should speak and when you should not
You were taught to read and write, to take your lessons home at night
A little knowledge serves you well but the golden rule does not
Then I said, "Now what do you mean," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
"Where'll I go, what'll I be," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
Then when I came home that night to lie awake in bed
I thought of that old gypsy and the words that she had said
And now I see with due respect, the more we learn the worse we get
So if you feel you've no regrets, go have your fortune read Then I said, "Now what do you mean," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
"Where'll I go, what'll I be," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
"Your are so old, your are so wise, deedly-dum, deedly-die"
"Give me a sign, tell it to me," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
"Where'll I go, what'll I be," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"
"Your are so old, your are so wise, deedly-dum, deedly-die"
"Give me a sign, tell it to me," she said, "deedly-dum, deedly-dee"

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !
Thanks, jj, and I don't know if you noticed but I did try to move a bit closer to the camera. Good call. I think it's better this way. I didn't think I could get as much of the guitar into the field of view as I did. Your chords for The Gypsy look right on - not counting the capo-ing of course (I confess to being a bit particular that way-comes from my study of jazz.)

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !
Nice rendition and vocal range. I doubt if many others even attempt that song. My brain almost burst just thinking about using my cigarette-riddled lungs to perform it.
A couple of questions : What kind of gear are you using (mic, recording software, etc) ?

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !
Hi RM,
in my youth I narrowly escaped the lure of tobacco myself. Luckily I have a really low tolerance for dry mouth.
About my equipment. It's really very spare. I have a Fostex 8-channel multi-track digital recorder which I have pressed into service as a mixer. It also has some rudimentary effects and I haven't been shy about using the reverb. The mic I'm using came with it. The whole kit with headphones included cost about 300 US dollars circa 2004. To complete the hardware I have two 1/4" patch cables and a two - 1/4" mono to one 1/8" stereo adapter. This is how I interface with the computer. The computer itself is the one indulgence in luxury It's one of the newer iMac's with a built-in webcam. The software is just iMovie. All I do is send the audio to iMovie and record myself playing and singing simultaneously. The only editing I do is clipping the beginnings and endings, so that you don't have to watch me adjusting my seating position and saying things like "check" into the mic.
About the headphones: I've been advised by some not to wear them. The thing is I have a hearing impairment. It's a mild to moderate loss, but it's enough that I can't usually tell if I'm getting a good take without them. When I can get along without them I do. I'm in the process of getting myself some hearing aids. They're ungodly expensive which is why I haven't gotten them yet. I'm hoping when I get them in about another month I can dispense with the headphones. Thanks for the kind words. By the way, I have written an original song. I will be posting it within the next few weeks.

I certainly notice, Tim...much more captivating, in my opinion anyhow
I would even go a notch further actually, the triangle outlined by your eyebrows, your right hand and left hand is really where the magic is happening...there's nothing really going on at the top or bottom of your guitar or above your forehead so why not crop it out, again my preference only but since youtube is already limiting in quality and it's ability to emulate a live setting or full screen DVD quality viewing, I would creep in until it looks a bit ridiculous and then back off a bit...anyhow here's a screen capture framing of what I would suggest
now back to what really matters, the wonderful performance, Tim ... congrats on conquering that one...although I love to hear cover arrangements, there are a slew of Gord tunes I don't think anyone should attempt including this one, BUT I was wrong in this case, you conquered that whincing vocal... I've always thought it was one of the most lovely tunes I've ever heard ...I've always loved the bridge and I love your intro (same goes for your TWIF intro, very tasty)
cheers, thanks for this and have a good trip

Re: Singing "Gordon Lightfoot" songs !
Thanks jj. I'm especially glad you like the intro work on this and TWIF. One can't always stick closely to the recorded arrangments (and some would say nor should one) when all you have is one guitar and one voice. So I guess where that's a lot of the creativity comes in, and you never now how it's going to play with your listeners.
I'm inclined to agree with you about framing the shot. It's a little difficult because I have equipment sitting around me, but I could be less lazy about how I arrange it I guess. When I get back from my trip I'll see what I can do.
Thanks for the suggestions. -Tim
