Another cover-The Way I Feel
Frida's Brow
Frida's Brow
Independent
Each of the three women in Frida's Brow - Chris MacLean, Alise Marlane and Jennifer Noxon - is a good solo singer-songwriter. But, in coming together as Frida's Brow, the Ottawa-area trio has achieved something very special with their gorgeous harmonies and subtly creative arrangements that incorporate elements of swing, bluegrass and traditional Québécois music into their contemporary folk base. All three contribute some fine originals including Noxon's Sleep On, a haunting historical ballad set in the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919, MacLean's Spring, which celebrates the end of winter, and Marlane's title track, a tribute to the natural uni-brow beauty of artist Frida Kahlo. They also include several covers including sublime versions of Gordon Lightfoot's classic The Way I Feel and Charlie Sohmer's Marie-Anne Lagimodière. ****

Re: Another cover-The Way I Feel
I'm impressed. They have 2 minute samples on their CDBaby site, and their treatment of 'The Way I Feel' is interesting. Their MySpace site has 4 complete songs (The Way I Feel NOT included). 'Old Friends' is catchy. They remind me of The Roches.

Re: Another cover-The Way I Feel
Most interesting whilst you three were posting here I was busily fighting this lethargic dial up connection to investigate.
my comments are:-
- Mike Regenstreif is well known (by Val at least) as a Montreal DJ who often has featured Gord in his programmes
- the my space site is at:-
http://www.myspace.com/fredasbrow
- On the CD baby site is their debut CD

- There there are indeed links to "play all songs" in hi (broadband) quality or lower (dialup) and individual links to dial up (lofi) 2 minute samples.
- The TWIF link is to an m3u playlist file
http://cdbaby.com/mp3lofi/fridasbrow-10.m3u
- Which I saved then opened in wordpad to extract the actual mp3 URL, which is:-
http://audio.cdbaby.com/67c81e23/mp3...dasbrow-10.mp3
You can right click on that URL then "save target as" to get the 32KBPS mp3 of only 470KB
it plays well though
 - Well well enough to confirm that it is not so much "sublime" as plain "weird"
- But then TWIF is way down in my own list of GL favourites!!
- to upload this, because this forum upload system does not accept mp3s as such, I zipped it to produce an even smaller (458KB) zipfile
- Note that in fact you could upload (zipped) mp3s as large as 5MB

Re: Another cover-The Way I Feel
I know because it's a 2 minute sample. Just checking if you would respond...and you did.

Yikes
Err Umm lets ponder that question a moment
Yes a sample per the on online dictionary at:-
http://dictionary.reference.com/
is:-
"a small part of anything or one of a number, intended to show the quality, style, or nature of the whole; specimen."
another definition I found is:-
"A portion, piece, or segment that is representative of a whole."
My best guess then is that the site is directed at getting punters to shell out for the full version (the complete CD's worth of mp3s) , so all they need to show is a tempting sample. Of course "sample" might mean something altogether different in french!!
