Can anyone fill me in on what was happening in Gordon's life during the period that "Salute" was released? There seems to be a very positive/happy feeling behind this product. Was this around the time that he gave up the booze?

he gave up the booze in 1982, so that must be it. there's a few photos of him in (i think) 82, playing live and he looks awful.
actually on page 4 of the shadows booklet, there a "before" shot and on page 7, an "after" one

Actually, this is also (Shadows) the time when Gord was afflicted with Bell's Palsy which may explain some of his appearance, in addition to the excessive booze during that time. Keep in mind that the reason the Shadows album cover came out with the "fuzzy, shadowy" photo is, reportedly, due to the palsy that was causing the droopiness on one side of his face.

He had Bell's Palsy in 1972, not 1982.

I thought he was on stage in the early 70's and had the attack of Bell's Palsy and that the picture on Old Dan's Records was because of it. Hmmmmm I guess it is research time.

You're welcome. Actually, your recollection was entirely correct. He was performing at Massey when he was striken; his doctor just happened to be in the audience; saw him backstage and diagnosed him, and gave him something so that he was actually able to complete the show. And it was the ODR album cover that was supposedly intentionally shadowy to cover up the effects of BP. But I have always been confused about that, because he was supposedly striken on the left side of his face (according to many articles), yet the ODR cover has his right side in shadow.

I stand corrected. Hmm...this alzheimer's is getting worse! Actually, I did know that the B.P. episode was in the 70s but for some reason I have always thought it was the Shadows cover photo that was, supposedly, masking the evidence. Now I'll have to go back to ODR and re-connect my stories.

Val, I had wondered about that too a friend of mine thought it was a mirror image. I watched show on Cindy Crawford and her mole was on the wrong side of her face in a couple pictures. Or maybe an earlier picture was used.

I think getting clean and sober is the reason he recorded "A Lot More Livin' To Do" aka "Salute!" I like this LP more than I did last year. The different stages of GL's career take time to grow on you,I guess. Been me,later!
