well Sean if you are indeed interested in getting D18GL number 57 I would suggest that you discount Cathy's pointing out that

However they are then referring to £15 postage by Interlink which is in efect a UK franchised version of FedEx for overnight deliveries and I don't thihk postage/posting is therefore a good description, One thought as the seller is in the UK you could if you really are intending to go to GordfestUK04 get one of the rich UK Lightheads to bid and buy it for you to collect later. So ask Bruna/silverheels if she'd oblige!!

On second thoughts I see that the seller is a dealer in Cardiff in Welsh Wales so Sean you could contact Mair who, lives there and save all the "postage".
One oddity although this is listed at ebay uk
and all UK GL items usually appear on the main ebay.com listing at:- http://ebaylightfoot.shorturl.com
this particular auction does not so perhaps bidding is somehow restricted to the UK
in this case.Does anyone know for sure??

This 2565 GBP converts to $4701. Frankly, given that shipping it here - or carrying it back - presents costs (don't forget customs) and complications, I think you'd be better off consider the one that Jim Holler has for sale at $5000. I am not pushing his; just making an observation. A 10% customs tax adds $470 all by itself. Remember, most of the resales in the past two years have been in the $4400 to $5000 range - tending toward the middle of that range. Only one guitar has been clearly documented as selling for more, and nobody has bought one for less in the past couple of years (that I know of). If you want one, I'd say $4700 to $5000 is the best you will see and holding out for the lower price might result in no guitar at all. There are only 61 of them out there, and probably only 20% of those are likely to change hands.

This price, in the UK, seems like good value to me, it represents a 2.6% increase in the price I paid in January 2002.

Here is a thought, the price quoted will include VAT @ 17.5% an overseas buyer would not have to pay this, so knock 15% off the price quoted, this gives the approximate price before VAT is added. After all once the dealer has sold the thing he will have to give that amount to the government, so It will not make any difference to him.

Thanks, everyone! I have emailed the seller and am waiting on a response. At least there are two for sale on the planet! I would like to know how this special model actually sounds. I have many acoustics, and if you play three of the same model, each one is slightly different. Does anyone else find that to be true? I am buying a Martin, and while having Gord's model would be the ultimate trip, it still must sound special. I played a David Crosby model, basically the same appointments, and it sounded like crap! It looked good, though! Any opinions???

It sounds great! You must have tried a badly set up David Crosby. That is a nice model too. I have heard mine and Derek's, and both are wonderful (he plays his a lot more so it's undoubtedly more opened up, but mine sure sounds good). Derek has jammed with another friend who has one too, so I guess we can speak for three of them!

Several friends of mine bought one on resale, and none of them were disappointed. No guarantees, of course. I know of two people who were unhappy with the guitar; both had purchased them from a dealer. One has sold it; the other kept it and has perhaps solved his problems with better setup. But a guitar is a personal thing, and no guitar is perfect for everybody.

I can say that one very talented D-18 player who shall be nameless said the D-18GL was the best sounding D-18 he had ever played. He was playing mine. (But I'm sure there are vintage D-18s out there that sound even better ... if you can afford $25,000 or so).

Thanks for the input. The D-18DC I played was probably not set up right. It had the burled walnut back/sides, but it sounded absolutely pathetic. I am still waiting for the return email from the U.K. dealer. I'll let you know.

Mine was great the day I got it,and even better now.I went and got an almost new D-18V a while back and although it is as nice to play as the Gordy,soundwise,it just don't have it yet.
I too also talked to a very talented Man that has one,and He play's a lot of Gord's stuff..Might even be the same Guy that was playing Val's..He told me that His sounded so good that He thought He might start using it all the time.....

Oh yes, Val! I remember that night! He couldn't keep his hands off of it. Too funny. He'd pick it up, play for a time, put it down, then couldn't resist so he'd pick it up again, play some more, put it down, over and over and over again.

Are You sure it was a D-18 with walnut back and sides? All the D-18's that I know of use mahogoney for the back and sides and sitka spruce for the top's..Maybe that's why it did'nt sound so good?

The same person also fell madly in love with my old D-15 and wouldn't give it back to me. He kept saying, "What a great guitar! I've got to get me one of these."
A few days later, I tried to scrape his skin cells off my guitar and clone him so I'd have my very own lead guitarist, but it didn't work, dammit.

Sean, I love my D18-GL. It has crisp higher end tones and a rich full lower end. I had a chance to talk to Gord shortly after I received it and he said it will "come in" with some time. After about 6 months it did exactly that. Also, Gord said to use the "Ball medium lights" on it and man do they make a difference. Actual strings are "Ernie Ball medium lights." Hope it works out for you and if you have any other questions let me know. This is my first post and I have followed this board for awhile and appreciate all the good information I have received. Thanks, #11. I am emailing the seller in the U.K., but may pursue Val's friend and his D-18GL. I am glad to hear that all who have resonded think the tone is best! So often, you play 3-4 guitars of the same model, and they all sound different.

I have just purchased the aforementioned #57.
Didn't think I'd ever see one in the UK let alone become a very proud owner!
It looks feels and sounds great!
I've been playing Gord's fantastic songs in folk clubs around the UK since 1970 on my old USA Harmony Sovereign.
My biggest regret is that I haven't seen him in concert. I believe the last time he toured here was in the mid-seventies but pulled out of the tour before getting to my hometown.
