So, is there any interest in guitar chats? We already have a room set up at
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group...ootguitarchat/
You have to become a member if you want to participate. Yahoo has a voice function, so if you have a mic on your computer, everyone in the room can hear you play... and if you have speakers, you can hear everyone else.
If interested, what night would be the best for you?
Would you want to include the people at alt.music.lightfoot? We used to do it with both groups, and quite a few people just came in to listen. It was great fun!
Do we limit it to only Lightfoot tunes, or just do a free for all? In the past, we usually started out with all Lightfoot, but branched out to other songwriters as the night progressed.
Will we just perform, or will we also give lessons to someone trying to learn a song?
These are all things we have to consider.
Let me know if you're interested.

Great idea Cathy
If you are sure that the microphone chat system will reliably function ,the problems experienced few years ago I believe led to the discontinuence of chats either in the guitar chatroom or the other chatroom at:-
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group...tfootchatroom/
but could I suggest that somebody (Val perhaps)
try to improve the curent peremptory unwelcoming unwelcome message that you get when visiting the guitarchat group:-
"Are you a member of this Group? [Sign in now]
Sorry, this group is available to members ONLY.
You are not allowed to access this group."
If I sign in with my yahoo groups member name I then read
"This club is no longer in use for chat or messages**"
the other room has the same message
there are however still 106 members in both groups
** despite that declaration Val posted a message to both groups on the 21st regarding the anouncement of Gord's Canadian tour

I added the messages that the groups were no longer in use because I didn't want to mislead people who might find the link. If we decide to use either or both rooms, then I will gladly remove the message.
Since you have a chat room that works for you, I don't think it makes sense to ressurrect the general chatroom (Gordon Lightfoot Chat Room); Cathy is suggesting the the Guitar Chat room and that makes the most sense for "chats" that are really jam sessions. The Yahoo room worked most of the time for most people. It was not abandoned because if didn't work, but because people lost interest. Now we have many new people (and some long time members like Cathy) who want to open the room again.
I think it's a great idea. If there is enough interest and Cathy says "let's do it", I'll update the home page to indicate that Guitar Chat is open for business (and post the night or nights that people will gather).

OK Val has now clarified the logical reason behind the "no longer in use" message and I guess that the "get lost" mesaage is inevitable for a members only group and cannot be made less obnoxious. The odd thing is that on one attempt I did I am sure get in far enough to see the recent mesages but now I can only get the "members only" mssage and the listing of "my groups" completely ignores the guitarchat group. If you go ahead then a modicum of instruction on the procedure for gaining membership will be essential

Ditto.
in retrospect I have a feeling that I never was a member of the guitarchat group only the regular chatroom group, andt I seem to remember Cathy or somebody asking me in an email if I would like to join. That would explain why my "my groups" listing carefully omits the guitar chat group.
all the more unfortunate then that the silly and rude statement that I can see as I expect Mary saw too simply says:-
"this group is available to members ONLY"
If it is indeed an automtically generated statement by the Yahoo system then
I guess there is nothing that can be done to amend it to make it potential-user-friendly by providing at the very least a clue on how to apply to join, IMHO a vital detail.
so if that is the immutable case only a suitable description posted here would enable punters to apply to join the fun

I think the Guitar chat room was initially set up to require an invitation because a previous incarnation that allowed anyone to join resulted in spammers and trouble makers making their presence known in a most annoying way during our "sessions"
I know towards the end of those guitar chats, we started using another voice chat program because of technical problems. Hopefully over the years, Yahoo has corrected those problems and there wouldn't be any issues. I guess I unsubscribed from the Yahoo Guitar Chat group when we switched, because I don't see it with my other Lightfoot related groups in "my groups" listing. So if this goes forward, I definitely request an invitation to join.
I'm not a player, but always attended the guitar chats because I enjoyed listening - and performers deserve an audience to cheer them on I think it's a great idea, Cathy. I think it would be fun to include the News Group players who don't post here as well - could be that none of them would show up. Evidently real life is pretty busy as quiet as it's been over there lately. But, Derek and I were recently discussing how much we missed those guitar chats, so you never know.
As far as whether it should it be performance only or some teaching as well - I'll leave that question up to you players. I'd be fine with it either way.
Janice

Okay. The only way I'll ever remember to send out invitations is to have you e-mail me at cathy@cathycowette.com. Otherwise, as soon as I close this web site, I forget about sending invitations.
Next, I'll have to figure out HOW to send invitations. I knew how to do that at one point.
