Lightfoot has rare stomach disorder
by Lori Fazari
The Hamilton Spectator
The next few days will be uncertain for doctors treating Gordon Lightfoot.
The legendary Canadian folk singer-songwriter remains in serious condition in the intensive care unit at McMaster University Medical Centre.
Lightfoot has a rare weakness in a blood vessel in his abdominal area. He was flown to hospital in Hamilton by an air ambulance from his hometown of Orillia early Sunday morning, with internal bleeding.
Since arriving here, the 63-year-old has undergone a number of procedures, said Dr. Michael Marcaccio, chief of surgery at Hamilton Health Sciences and a gastrointestinal specialist.
“The nature of this problem is such that things are continuously changing,” Marcaccio said. “We’re still dealing with some difficult issues.”
Marcaccio said Lightfoot’s physical fitness and health - he works out four days a week and runs 16 kilometres a week, according to bandmates - has made a difference in treating him.
“If Mr. Lightfoot weren’t such a healthy man, he might not have survived,” Marcaccio said.
“He’s had a bit of a rough ride for the last day and a half.”
His family has asked that their privacy be respected.
“They’re coping with lots,” Marcaccio said.
Yesterday, the hospital set up a second press conference to update his condition, with Marcaccio, ICU co-ordinator Andreas Freitag and three band members - bassist Rick Haynes, keyboardist Mike Heffernan and drummer Barry Keane.
While family members and band-mates have been by Lightfoot’s bedside, his many fans have sent their get well wishes along.
Lightfoot’s career has spanned some 40 years, with his songs covered by the likes of Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley. Among his best-known works are Canadian Railroad Trilogy, If You Could Read My Mind, Sundown and Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Haynes thanked fans for their support.
“We know there’s a tremendous amount of concern from fans,” he said.
“We’re very encouraged by the excellent care Gordon’s getting.”
Lightfoot was on tour and set to perform a second show in Orillia on Saturday night, when he fell ill. He was taken to Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, but after examining him, hospital staff concluded his needs were beyond their resources.
Using the Ontario CritiCall Program, an emergency-patient referral service that is based at Hamilton Health Sciences, doctors in Orillia called a phone line to find the best available tertiary-care hospital with the expertise to treat his condition.
Lightfoot’s weakened artery has likely been present for a while, Marcaccio said, but has caused no previous problems. He couldn’t say how long Lightfoot would be in the hospital or what any long-term side effects might be. He said doctors are dealing with the complexities of the ailment as they arise.
The rest of Lightfoot’s Canadian dates have been called off, including one in Stratford last night, although Lightfoot’s manager has said that U.S. tour dates, beginning Oct. 17 in East Lansing, Mich., are expected to go on.
Haynes said he doesn’t know when the band will resume touring.
“I think it’s up to Gordon when he goes back on the road.”

Just wanted to let Gordon know that I am thinking of him and hoping for a quick recovery. It is scary thinking of him sick, he is the voice of Canada and I hate to think he is actually human like the rest of us. Please get well and sing for us again.

Carol:
I posted an article on "Distant Healing"...I dont know about you or the rest but, I'm an optimist & a firm believer in such a thing-even though it sounds outlandish or "otherworldly".
The science community is delving into that subject more & more these days. (There must be something to it in order for it to catch their attention!)

I'm not surprised the October concerts were postponed. Let's hope he's better by Nov.

as many others have said & felt, i would rather take a postponement on his upcoming gigs than for Gord to feel pressured into honouring these soon approaching dates. i don't mean to sound gratuitous in anything i might say about Gord. whatever i say about GL is straight from my heart. he has been THE most influential person in my personal life, both good & bad.
the bottom line is, Gord, get healthy soon!

Pollstar has the Florida Concerts deleted but the October shows as still active. I guess we'll have to wait and see, bummer.
Since tomorrow is Sunday and many of us who are so inclined will be in church we should all pray for his speedy recovery. Those of us who are not churched should pray too. And those of us who don't pray should think good thoughts, etc. Hang in there mate!!!

Something to think about if your at a loss for a way to handle what's going on.
