Lightfoot to play two Massey Hall shows before Toronto venue closes for two years

Gordon Lightfoot will be the last performer to play Massey Hall next June before the 123-year-old hallowed Toronto venue closes its doors for renovations until the fall of 2020.

The 79-year-old Orillia, Ont., native, who has played Massey Hall more than any other artist over the last half-century with 166 performances, will stage two shows on June 29-30, The Toronto Sun has learned before Monday’s official announcement.

“Massey Hall is home,” Lightfoot said in a statement. “These shows are a constant fixture for me. They anchor me, and we are glad to have been invited to be a part of its history.”

Lightfoot, who won the first-ever Massey Hall Honours Award, began his series of annual concerts at the venue in March 1967 with two sold-out shows.

However, he also performed there as a 10-year-old when he entered the Kiwanis Music Festival and won first place in his category.

“There would be no artist more appropriate than Gordon Lightfoot to play Massey Hall as we close the building to begin the revitalization of our beloved hall,” Deane Cameron, President & CEO, Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall, said in a statement.

“Just like the building itself, Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian legend, synonymous with Massey Hall,” Cameron said. “His incredible songs and voice have filled this Hall for decades and there is no doubt that he will continue to inspire audiences when we re-open in 2020.”

Toronto’s Massey Hall, which is about to get a make-over, is seen here on Friday, Dec. 1, 2017.
Massey Hall’s revitalization is a seven-year project that will see both the exterior and interior of the building fully restored along with a new addition.

Tickets, $32.50 – $119.50, for Lightfoot’s two June shows go on sale Tuesday (Dec. 5) to FriendsFirst, on Wednesday (Dec. 6) to American Express Front Of the Line and on Friday (Dec. 8) to the public at 416-872-4255 or 1-855-985-5000, the Roy Thomson Hall Box Office or online at http://www.masseyhall.com or http://www.ticketmaster.ca.
