Default SAM SNIDERMAN and Lightfoot

http://news.library.ryerson.ca/music...m-sniderman-1/

SAM SNIDERMAN: “I always said, ‘God gave the artists talent, but they need exposure,’” Sam told me. “I found that if we pushed Canadian records, Canadian artists would push us on stage. It was a good, happy marriage. We got our money out of the records.”

Gordon Lightfoot was the first artist Sam truly took a shine to. In 1962, Sam helped turn Lightfoot’s first single Remember Me (I’m The One) into a top 10 Canadian hit, and later helped organize a showcase for the singer/songwriter at Steele’s Tavern.

“Steele Basil, the owner, wouldn’t give us the money for the drinks,” Sam told me. “But Decca Records gave us $20 to buy whatever we had to buy.”

“He always featured my product,” Lightfoot says. “I even did a performance of Cold on the Shoulder in his store one time. We had the kind of relationship that I never questioned him. I had confidence in knowing that he was interested in what I was doing.”
