A very nice Christmas present from our ever insightful and thoughtful friend to us, the ever loving and appreciative Lightfoot listeners.

Thanks JJ. This is a cool one.

I've always loved that song and also believed it was very underrated. Quite simply put, to me it's a masterpiece of work.

This version is quite unique in the fact that there's no bass guitar and the twist of having a mandolin included. It sure does work well though IMHO.

It reminded me of John Denver's version of Steve Gillette's "Darcy Farrow" where Pete Huttlinger comes in there on the mandolin and it makes for quite a tasteful compliment.

So all in all it was a quite a treat waking up to on this beautiful sunny day here in our nation's capital city of Ottawa.

Time now to read the morning paper, sip a cup of tea and take in the joyful sound of the morning church bells from the cathedral close by.

Would you believe that once again, today, when I opened my mailbox, yet another present, a personal one this time from, well, should we ask?

One hour, twenty four minutes and fifty three seconds of the 2011 pub jam at MeVeigh's on a DVD!

Well, I'll tell ya; it doesn't get much better than this and I know I've said that before here, but when you're left speechless, what else is there to say except that even before I go to bed tonight, I know I'm guaranteed a really great night's sleep.

So now, looking at the clock, it reads 11:55, and in five minutes I'll be "somewhere east of midnight."

Thanks JJ.

first, Ron, please enjoy the full show and feel some well deserved pride in your putting it together and mc-ing, not to mention those performances of yours...APPT, Echoes of Heros, etc etc ...wow

it was hard to get it down to 18 minutes...i think most have seen it but

secondly, regarding your comment above: I've said that I've never been trained musically but i actually did take two piano lessons when i was about 8 and then didn't gain interest again until i took up trombone in school when i was 16 and that's when my fellow tromboner (heheh) showed me a few piano chords after class....i could continue the ramble but my point was, that the actual teacher i had for those two lessons waaay back, was the fellow who plays the bells (carillon) at the Metropolitan Cathedral on Queen St

....I have great memories of attending annually for the mass/carol singalongs in that great building...if there's a Heaven i hope that's what it's like...this year they've moved the choir performances to Roy Thomson ....hmmmm

well, Merry Christmas, Ron and all the best to your loved ones for 2012

Wow!
That really fired up the spirit of Christmas. What a treat. He sure is very skilled. It's cool to watch the way he negotiates his way back and forth on his bench in order to hit the right keys. Thanks so much JJ.

Ironically while I was listening to it the bells started ringing in the cathedral (Notre Dame on Sussex St). It didn't occur to me that it was twelve noon, and they ring every hour.
A light snowfall overnight covered the City of Ottawa and the temperature is remaining cool so it looks like we just might have a white Christmas.

And also thank you for your kind words re the pub jam.

And to think that in less than two weeks we'll be into 2012 and we can start planning the next pub jam hopefully in November when Gord announces the dates.

I'd like to get "Miguel" included on our song list for the next one.

The plan is falling in place already. This cool thread started the inspiration for sure.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a "Song For A Winter's Night."

Peace and joy.

RJ.

So many gems of songs among Lightfoot's library ... it seems we're always rediscovering one or another that has fallen somewhat by the wayside over the years. Was just listening to a live version of Hey You and realized what a great tune it is. Might be the next one to tackle in my studio ...
