yeah I did a search on here for the expo and if this photo had been posted before and found an old post from way back, someone else who was at the '67 Expo...who didn't find out until after that Gordon had performed there!

Time flies I've realized that I hadn't bookmarked this just a few months ago...it was more like in 2007 or '08 I was looking to hire someone to do photo work on a grant I got for the museum where I was working.

I was really surprised to see this photo on there, so unexpected. And I know I've come across other neat photos and stuff I save in different places on my PC and end up forgetting about . I should learn to post things right when I find them! Better late then never though.

Yay Pam what a splendiferius find,it is so much better than the prosaic black and white one in the Songbook booklet

Like Yuri I was at Expo 67 many times (somewhere I have my old Expo passport and that year we felt we were living at the very centre of the world)
which of course was thanks to Montreal's dynamic Mayor Jean Drapeau
who had succeeded in the three years since I had arrived in Montreal in converting it from what had all the hallmarks of wartime bomb damaged London England with many a derelict vacant lot into a city of overall neatness
I do not think that Gord's Expo appearances were especially well publicised if at all (but this was just before I became a Lighthead) but at the end of his week there a mate of my guitar playing friend David Moxey from the CERA (Canadair Employees Recreation Association) Badminton Club , his mate Peter Wright (himself newly arrived from Toronto and who had seen Gord at the Riverboat) and knew that both David and I were becoming Gordfans after we had heard him on Montreal's CJAD-FM station, phoned us very excitedly on the Sunday evening May 21st 1967, to say we just had to go and see Gord at the New Penelope , a small coffee bar on Sherbrook Street West in downtown Montreal

I was only one of about 250 crammed into that coffee bar,I may be wrong about that figure though because I just found
http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/...Collection.htm

and a reviewer there said amongst other things that I am saving for another thread
"have followed this great artist from the humble early days when he was playing for crowds as small as 100 at 'The New Penelope' in Montreal"

and it was like all subsequent lightfoot concerts I have been lucky to attend magnificent and truly memorable but during that week Gord was seen by amongst others the young Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings and as reported on on this forum back in 2002 by either Annette Hannivan or Mister hoot'n holler
(one can't be sure because there are two identical postings in thread
http://www.corfid.com/vbb/showthread...highlight=expo
"your first GL concert"
under both member's names which are a legacy of Florian's earlier attempt to move the the forums from the old program/webhost to the new improved one which caused many spurious duplicates like that one)
I am going to contact both Peter Wright (still I believe living in Montreal)
and Dave Moxey who is now yet another "Dave From Melbourne" and give them both the URL of this thread and invite them to add their comments

Mr. Drapeau engineered a lifelong debt for the good citizens of Quebec with his folly of a sports centre called the Big "O" but became known as the BIG OWE due to ridiculous cost over runs and a debt tha is still being paid off for a building that while looking good was an engineering disaster..
lol
much like the Skydome/Rogers Centre..that folly will be part of my great great great grandchildrens tax bills in Ontario.
My mum went to Expo '67 but would have never crossed the street to see Lightfoot.

I was but 12 and unaware of The Man at that point in my life.

hey John...I LOVE that poster...groovy thanks for posting it! yeah you found the same thread I had when I searched for the expo. Must have been fun to go to that! I think it was around that time (or the year before) my family all went to the NY expo...I was too young to recall much now but that it was fun and exciting and I road on a roller coaster for the 1st time.

WOW so very kewl that you did still get to see him during the coffee house days!!! So what else do you remember from Gord's performances back then? When did you get to see him perform again after that time?

yeah the color photo is nicer than the one in Songbook -which I had forgotten it was even in there so thanks for the re-mind.

I really do not remember much about the New Penelope concert other than the seating comprised scaffolding planks and piping, and we were rather crammed in
Certainly he would have performed his latest epic CRT (then only about 5 months old of course)
My next 66 concerts (including the 4 concert Massey season next November) are fully documented at:-

Charlene... Who is this strange fellow (see above message) whose blogs have been appearing here there and everywhere on Corfid?
