Default Newport Folk Festival

Once again, the Newport Folk Fest has a surprising line-up of performers which include:

Jimmy Buffet
the Black Crowes
Levon Helm
Stephen and Damian Marley (son's of Bob)
Jakob Dylan (Bob's son)

hmmmm I wonder if the Marley brothers will be performing at the July Reggae festival in Rhode Island (nope, I just looked -they're not)

Once again, under the sponsorship of Dunkin' Donuts - the line between traditional and modern folk music is being blurred. Last year the headlining acts were Linda Ronstadt and the Allman Bros. Ben and Jerry's sponsorship maintained the integrity of folk music at the festival and I wonder how many real folk music performers are not having the opportunity to perform at the fest these past few years???!!!!

Hi Podunklander,

Have you recovered from all the fun and the hot Canadian men by now?

I can't stretch my thinking far enough to think of the Black Crowes as folk musicians.
I am not that familiar with Stephen and Damian Marley...not that much of a fan of reggae music (if that's what they play)

It seems that more and more the lines between a lot of things in our society are being blurred for the sake of money...it's a shame.

I hate the thought of so many new and wonderful artists never getting heard becasue of the way the music industry is now....even established artists are having a hard time getting airplay on the radio so what chance does a new talent have?

I love the old time folk music and that's what I would want to hear if I were going to a folk festival but I am only one person....just my opinion.
I wouldn't mind hearing new folk music but most of the bands/people that you listed seem more like rock or alternative artists to me.

Do you go to the fest?

Well, that's bad timing!

Maybe there is something else you can do that would be more fun anyway...

Tough to get back to work...yep, I always have a hard time getting back to reality after a vacation or something fun.

Jimmy Buffet...I know tons of people love him but I just don't quite get his music....lol.
I love "Come Monday" but other than that, I can't say I am that much of a fan.
Maybe I just haven't heard the right songs...
